Peter Stringer takes a boot to the face
European champions Munster got their Magners League campaign off to a good start on Friday night with a 20-15 win over Edinburgh at Murrayfield.
A solid kicking display by former Gloucester player Chris Paterson meant the final five minutes were nervy for the visitors, but through some solid defence and loads of experience, they held on for the win.
Substitute scrum half Peter Stringer unfortunately caught a stray boot with less than a minute in the match remaining.
Last season we saw a fairly similar incident, with Stringer that time catching his own teamate, Federico Pucciariello, in the face.
This time it was Edinburgh and Scotland scrum half Mike Blair who simply stepped over the ruck, probably trying to get his foot on the ball, but caught Stringer in the face.
It looked pretty bad, as a boot full of studs to the face isn't pretty, but I'd say it was simply clumsy and a bit of a freakish accident.

Looked painful, don't think there was need for him to go to ground like that but that definitely would have hurt. Good to see munster playing their full strength side, the magners is getting better every year with every side now taking it serious, edinburgh are also getting better crowds which is good, over 5,000 for that game instead of the usual 1 or 2,000. Don't see why they play in murrayfield though, it holds 60,000 so it just feels empty with no atmosphere.

Yeah I totally agree geraint. I have seen them play at a smaller stadium in the past though (I think?), and it looked a lot better. There's also a far better atmosphere at smaller stadiums, as they're normally full!
Same happens in SA with the (Gauteng) Lions and Ellis Park.. can never fill the thing except for Test matches.
The better the Edinburgh side perform though, the more people will go to the games... in theory.
Then again, was it not 4000 red army and 1000 Scots? :P

Needs to harden up

Its weird that no one realized what happened, not even stringer's team mates. Also, that was an awful dive..

Shaft,
Most of the Munster lot don't travel for the Magners league. The majority of the fan base only care about the Heineken cup. (That's not a dig at Munster fans by the way, just an observation)

Well done, Mike Blair!
What a bloody chancer. That makes Justin Marshall look hard.

Diving wee so and so - thanks for the Edinburgh highlights though - wanted to get the kit but apparently Rhino have made a shambles of themselves so there are no Edinburgh kits in the shops at all.

Disgusting dive....have to stamp that out *no pun intended*...i would hate for the game i love to be turned into a girly sport aka football, with pansies floppin every where, bunch of prima fckin donnas.
lol....

Ha, nice play acting. Yes would have stung, but nothing like he made it out to be.
The best thing tho, seems very similar to the Grewcock/Peel incident a few years back. That time grewcock got a yellow and called a thug..
hmm...

I'm sure it must have hurt, seeing what I call the toughest people in sport fall to the ground like that... I hope it wasn't an act, I'd hate for rugby to turn into a sport on trying to get penalties every chance you can. Watching the clip though really makes me wonder, I can hardly see contact actually.

Wow all these people on this discussion seem to be immune to studs to the eye.
Congratulations lads. I wish I was that hard.

OK not many of us like Stringer, but you have to admit that a boot in the face like that must really hurt !
By Anonymous, at September 09, 2008 9:28 pm
lol yeah give the guy a break. I don't know what happened afterwards, whether he was actually cut or not, but until then, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.
Not sure why guys feel the need to act hard and tough online? Show the midge some sympathy ;)

Stringer's just got a history of acting. OK, when Troncon punched him he had cause to go down, but he's a wee chancer. He seemed to get up fine when there was a chance out wide...

The boot would undoubtidly hurt and knock most people over, but to stand up from a crouching position to jump up and then fall over is diving...

What the fuck guys, he's got studs in the face... adn you are telling him to harden up... Wankers. I hope someone studs you in the face and we'll see you stand up and be a man.
By Anonymous, at September 10, 2008 11:35 pm
Donnacha, there's some difference between falling and diving. Did Stringer need to take a jump on this action ?
Anyway, if this guy would one day take the shot he deserves for his entire career... I don't think he would be able to walk again.

lol I can't believe the amount of comments saying he dived etc. I'd like to see how you react when you get a boot full of studs in your face. I think you'll find he didn't even have time to think about putting a little dive in and it was just a natural recoil action.
