All Black Nick Evans off to Harlequins

All Black and Auckland Blues fly half Nick Evans is another in the continued player drain from New Zealand, as he has confirmed he will join Guinness Premiership club Harlequins following the Air New Zealand Cup.

The 28-year-old has signed a deal that will keep him at The Stoop until 2011. In deciding to move to England, Evans has almost certainly ruled himself out of contention for the 2011 World Cup, after the New Zealand Union, said it will continue to select players based in the country.

Evans says it was too good an opportunity to turn down. "If I looked back, I would be a fool if I didn't take this opportunity," he said. "It never came down to margins and things like that. It was just about the lifestyle choice and what I wanted to do."

Evans would not reveal what the contract was worth but said he had made a three-year commitment to the Harlequins, a club with a rich history, and he had no regrets.

With Dan Carter out of the mix, the big question now is who will be the next in line for the prestigeous All Black number 10 jersey? Young Stephen Brett of the Crusaders would probably be the front runner, despite his inexperience on the international stage. Stephen Donald of the Chiefs blows hot and cold. So, it's a bit of a tough call for the NZ selectors.

Note: In this interesting interview we hear from the man himself on his reasons why the move makes sense.
Our question to you is, do Rugbydump viewers want to see more of these type of clips, or just stick to the action on the field?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 05, 2008 10:15 pm

  • Please stick to the action. You can put a link to this type of videos in the news section when you find some, though, for people who are interested

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 05, 2008 10:26 pm

  • yeh i agree with nico because i am interested, but it would be for the best so you dont have to put up with people complaining about those clips!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 05, 2008 10:29 pm

  • There should be some sort of news section on rugbydump that this could go into because it is interesting to be fair.

All interesting things rugbywise should be on RD!

  • i like these kinda clips becasue they allow me an insight into whats happenin on the other side of the world. i would never see this kinda thing otherwise . keep it up.

  • Dan Carter is out of the mix because he is going to Toulon if they manage to go in the Top14 next year, which is nearly sure. I don't know how long is his contract (actually there is no contract at the moment , but Carter and the club must have talked about it for sure) but I've heard between 6 months and a year.

I don't think he has done a good choice on a sportive point of view, he'll get loads of money (approx. 800 000€ - 1.580.000 NZ$), but I don't like Toulon and the way they play... In my opinion it would have been smarter to go in Toulouse, to join his All-Black team mate Byron Kelleher, I regret it when I think about what those 2 halves could have done together in the same club...

  • just love to see him answering all the questions, not like footballers always dodging the questions

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 05, 2008 11:11 pm

  • Love it. As much as it's great to see quality rugby action, this stuff is just as important in the scheme of things.

Where else we gonna see it?? I'm certainly not trawling through youtube or elsewhere to find it! cheers RD :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 05, 2008 11:43 pm

  • IMO i like all things rugby, & if hes going to be in england next year im glad to hear about it. AAgreed that you should make a new section, but still post the vid on main page

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 05, 2008 11:52 pm

  • Have them up, or put them in a new section. If people don't want to watch it then they don't have to. Just state it's an interview clip and then that is that.

    By Blogger aj.uk, at May 06, 2008 12:04 am

  • i watched this as intently as the most action packed clip in the archive. I think its good to see these interviews but if you get a heap of complaints, please post up links!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 12:07 am

  • yeh definitely good to have some more interesting stuff. nobody has to watch it. you might as well go and type "big hits" into youtube if you dont care whats actually happening in rugby

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 12:11 am

  • definitely should be shown. Don't care if it's in its own section or not. But ya, good to see! Always striving to improve RD. Keep going!

  • I think its a good clip, here in argentina we dont get much info about world rugby so i find it usefull... Puting some links in the forum will do, as the majority prefers action.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 12:55 am

  • for people, in this case: argentina, who dont get to see super 14, this is very helpful and informative, rugbydump brings us the news we dont get on tv, for me, rugbydump is like sportcenter.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 1:06 am

  • deffo want to see this sort of stuff....

as long as you dnt slack off on the action!!!

any chance of the leinster tries from the league winning match at the weekend???

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 1:32 am

  • i agree with alot of the other comments a "News Section" would be a really good idea. maybe get the interviews after the big games like internationals and cup finals etc.
wat do others think of that idea??

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 1:33 am

  • I like to see all things rugby union (ie no league).

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 2:39 am

  • Ill join the camp who is for having interviews and off-the-field video's. As some said before, where can I watch such things apart from on rugbydump? So yes, please continue!

    By Blogger Sea-Bass, at May 06, 2008 11:58 am

  • don't just stick to the action its good to have variety... this is an interesting story as it affects young northern hemisphere players looking to break through and the southern hemisphere players who will be playing at a lower standard now the big names are leaving... will european rugby become like the champions league in soccer full of talented foreign players and ends up to be a higher standard than the world cup?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 1:05 pm

  • Loved this clip, and would love to see more like it. Rugby's not all big hits and trys.Politics comes into it too!

By Blogger Will Topps, at May 06, 2008 1:29 pm

  • This is great! Rugby happens on and off the field, keep it coming!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 3:54 pm

  • This is good stuff to lets you know whats going on all over the world

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 4:22 pm

  • Dont stick to the action.. the more clip the better, and sometimes interview can be interesting when the player in question is a big rugby star.. Nick Evans sure is.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 5:17 pm

  • and uhhhh......uhhhh......uhhhh :P

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 6:41 pm

  • good to see interviews ... not very easy to see that kind of stuff here in south america (brazil, to be more precisely =D )

I don't think he is going JUST for the money ... maybe some of those players are just tired of playing the same teams every year ...in europe you have old rivalries, relegation and promotion, domestic and euro leagues ... i think it seems more appealing (im not trying to start the NH x SH rivalrie ... i think super 14 is great as well!)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 6:41 pm

  • carter is an idiot if he goes to france in my opinion because he is on the best team in the southern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere play the better rugby.I watch magners league every weekend(im irish)and then watch super 14 on saturday mornings and the gulf is massive. He is too young in my opinion to be selling out already.Does anyone know how long he will be gone for?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 6:56 pm

  • personally more of an "slich action" fan.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 06, 2008 7:21 pm

  • I think you should post txt but not a video stick to wat u do best rugbydump, on one hand keeping us informed about the wheelings and dealings in the rugby world. But more importantly keep us wincing when we watch the massive tackles.
    Thanks

  • I'd like to see just this clip on Rugbydump. Please remove all of the others and create the domain name "thenickevansclip.blogspot.com". That would be fantastic. THanks

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 07, 2008 9:24 pm

  • a good mix is what it needs, as long as u don't replace action with news i don't care

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 08, 2008 3:07 pm

  • you know ummmmmmmmmmmm im nick evans ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm im gonna play for harlequins ummmmmmmmmmmmm
