Ryan Kankowski gallops in for a great Sharks try

The Natal Sharks secured their place in this years Super 14 Semi Final on Saturday with a clinical 47-25 win over the Chiefs in Durban.

The seven tries to three victory not only booked the Sharks' place in the play-offs, after they finished third in the standings, but they also knocked their compatriots, the Stormers, out of the semifinals.

To advance the Sharks needed to win with four tries or win by 18 points. They scored six tries and won by 22 points, despite the score being 21-18 after 46 minutes.

One of the tries of the match came from thoroughbred Sharks number eight Ryan Kankowski. Kankowski is fast becoming a legend of Kingspark down in Durban, and will surely be a Springbok starter against Wales in the upcoming test series.

The Chiefs were on the attack when big substitute loose forward Jean Deysel marked a chip ahead. The big man tapped and ran, selling a dummy as he pounded up the field. He gave to Ruan Pienaar who dazzled the Chiefs defence before he gave to Kankowski who scored over 80 metres down field.

The Sharks are hitting their straps right on time, and if they continue to perform like they did on Saturday, we may well see them in the Final for the second consecutive year.

Note: Please excuse the useless commentary on the replay. It's not Jean Du Plessis as Garth Wright says - it is in fact Jean Deysel.

  • Great try! Nice call for mark too! Congrats to the Sharks for a well deserved win.

  • Sharks definetely the best SA team, they lost players like the bulls after the world cup, but they are still a great team! Wide open this year! i thought it'd be Crusaders, blues final at the begining of the year, now i have no idea who will win...the crusaders, who started strong are fading...the hurricanes & warratahs are both playing good but not great...the sharks, playing good!

    I'll back my home team
    !! go the Canes!!

  • Oh, who do you think will take out the title this year?

  • I'm telling you, the Kankowski is the new mullet. As a mate of mine says, you've gotta love his Hasselhoff of hair.

But more to the point... Sharks will hopefully be able to get past the Tahs in Sydney, and if they do, and the Canes somehow beat the Crusaders, then it'll be a home final for the Sharks, and at home they're pretty tough to take on. Come on Sharks!

Oh and well done to Jean Deysel, who, as regular S14 viewers will know, was pretty much nobody at the beginning of the season. Every time he's come on as a super sub though he's done absolutely superbly with his neat touches and barging runs. Just ask Richie McCaw.

  • what the terrible camera shots?
the cut to the crowd and the change to behind his back were shocking, jest keep the angle at wide! But other then that top try. Should be great to see the Waratahs take out the next game with a very competitive sharks outfit.

    Up the Tahs!

  • SA prospects for no. 8 aren't bad: Pierre Spies and Kankowski, two strong running and quick loose forwards

  • Wonderful camera work!!

  • Wonderful comment ^^
    Prick.

Great try though. I guess the cameraman/producer got a bit excited himself.

  • Now am I the only one who thinks that the SA and NZ commentators are bloody shithouse??? Well actually the NZ guys do come out with a few good ones though. All I ever hear from the SA guys is such and such has the ball, he passes to so and so, he gets tackled by.... etc.. For fucks sake we can see that... add to the footage don't narrate it. Were not fucking blind! Also I find the camera work from SA and NZ really dodgy too as you can no doubt see. Aussie commentators FTW!

  • This should make the short list for one of the best S14 tries of the year.

    Given:
    1) I have a short memory

    2) I only saw 1/2 the games (my TV svc only carries matches involving at least one RSA team)

This try by Kankowski is far better, McCaw, Brett and Casey Laulala all handed off, this one should be added to the dump !!!

  • Anon ^, Use a name in future plz man - easier to identify you.

Secondly, we're saving that one for the Kankowski compilation we're throwing together, which will probably come out after the Wales/Italy series if he plays, which he should do.

Kankowski vs Spies for the number 8 Bok jersey. Two totally different players but both incredible in their own way. Funny how Danie Rossouw is nowhere since the world cup... Strange really.
