Simon Shaw red card vs the All Blacks in 2004
This occured between the All Blacks & England in 2004, and is more of a talking point than a spectacularly violent incident.
Simon Shaw gets red-carded in the 10th minute for kneeing All Black lock Keith Robinson during ruck-time. England, who had had a decent start to the test match, had to play with only 14 men for the rest of the match. They lost 36-12.
Clive Woodward, the English coach, was furious about the sending-off: "We had an incident in Wellington last year when Ali Williams (All Black lock) stomped all over Josh Lewsey's head and was cited, but got off scot free in front of the judiciary."
All Black's Coach, Graham Henry, had no comment. The New Zealand Captain, Tana Umaga claimed that a 15 vs. 15 game would have been better, as the sending-off greatly altered the composure of the two sides.
Keith Robinson, the played who got kneed, said this:
"I was on the bottom of a ruck and I heard the crowd go off. I didn't know what had happened. When I got up I saw the red card, but I can say he didn't hurt me in any way. They are a physical forward pack, but I don't think they were trying to target anyone in particular."
Check out Tana Umagas face when he sees that Shaw has been red carded.

hate what they did to rucking. he is on the wrong side, he knows what he`s gonna get and he gets it. in recent time you get penalised for stamping instead him for being offside and killing the game!
lol for umaga`s face expression!

hate what they did to rucking.
When did anyone ever ruck by dropping their knees into someone's back?
By Anonymous, at April 16, 2007 11:29 pm
i was refering to rucking in general
By Anonymous, at April 17, 2007 10:48 pm
he should have used studs.......that didnt look like it hurt at all! if he had used studs he would have probably got a yellow at the most!

By Anonymous, at April 19, 2007 5:04 pm

England is a bunch of pompous wanks. I'm glad the AB's smoked their whorish mother country so bad that match.
By Anonymous, at May 07, 2007 6:56 am
yes well with out our Mr Web Ellis and our founding of the country NZ would be nothing. and we maybe a bunch of pompous wanks but we are still the world champions at rugby. go england

Colonial Scum. one rule for the Kiwis (i.e. all the Samoans, Tongans and Fijians they buy in), one rule for everyone else.
By Anonymous, at May 19, 2007 3:24 am
i dont no why ur all going out about colonial shananagans now the point of this video was to show simon shaws red card which he clearly deserved as hes just kneed someone in the head. he shouldnt have done it thats it
By Anonymous, at May 31, 2007 1:13 am
should have hit him harder!!!
By Anonymous, at June 03, 2007 6:13 pm
poor play by Shaw, probably didn't merit a red but penalty and sinbin, worse reaction by Umaga though
By Anonymous, at June 16, 2007 8:04 pm
well actully it obviously did warrant a red which is why he got one!!!

Shame the law on lying offsides tightened up, players should be able to take the law into there own hands. Typical AB's though lying offside, mentioning no names (McCaw)(Masoe)(Jack)i hope they get hit large portions in the world cup, especially umanga.

Whats wrong with being pompous! Im better than a lot of people in and i know it! if you can back it up then there is nothing wrong with it! and as for the "wanks" comment its a shame his father wasn't a wanker!

Im all for rucking if they are lying on the wrong side and killing the ball but New Zealand had possesion here they were going forward and england were defending and he knees him in the head... hmmmm and this is one rule for one and another for the kiwi's don;t think so dirty play! as for Umaga he's proven his worth and therefore can be as cocky as he wants! lets face it it isnt as if hes the new kid on the block!
By Anonymous, at July 19, 2007 12:45 am
Who cares
bottom line
doesnt belong in the game
thats all there is to it!
By Anonymous, at July 31, 2007 6:58 pm
If Keith Robinson was killing the ball, the ref would have pointed it out. Shaw over-reacted, then Spencer did, then Dallagio etc etc. Robinson couldn't exactly get out either could he? There was no trurf for his feet, all he could do was to wait for the ball to go.
By Anonymous, at August 11, 2007 9:26 pm
im from NZ and i think a red was harsh but then we have all the english people leaving comments like "should have kneed him harder" right beside their comments that say "he was killing the ball he deserved it" you would be saying different things if it was robinson kneeing shaw
By Anonymous, at August 12, 2007 11:48 am
Umaga is a piece of trash. Shaw should've shattered his ugly face while he was at it. While I agree that the kneeing was unnecessary, Robinson was on the wrong side and killing the ball. That still doesn't excuse Umaga's actions, though. Shaw should've been sin-binned, not sent off.
By Navaneethan Santhanam, at August 14, 2007 6:51 am
I would have given Shaw a yellow in that situation - red was too harsh!
And I agree completely with Woodward - that incident in Wellington was outrageous - the most blatant display of foul play I have ever seen with Williams just stamping on Lewseys head - and then no action is taken! I would have given him a red at the time and then had him banned for months!

stupid English prick got what he should of got!!!!
By Anonymous, at October 04, 2007 6:48 pm
It was illegal. No doubt. Over reacted big time. But Shaw has a good disaplinary record. Its unlike him and lets face it, the atmosphre in the ground was electric and everyone was wound up.
Umaga on the other hand is an over rated loser. He was always carried by talented footballers like Spencer, Mertens, Mauger, Cullen etc. He was a crash merchant. He would have been exposed for the limited player he was if he played for his true country Fiji. Prick and I agree with O' Driscoll. A cheat as well.

Bye Tana. Piss off to France. Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. Nobody gives a shit about your book and you're a cheat. An ugly SOMOAN cheat!!!

Simon Shaw is so clean that in the first test of this series he punched Mealamu in the side of the head at a lineout. No probs eh? 15 stitches and he helped win this game.
By Anonymous, at October 12, 2007 3:31 am
Wrong side of a ruck? Not even trying to get away? You're fair game. As long as there's no STUDS on the head and nowt in the groin they should let it go. If I lie on the wrong side I expect it, and so should everyone else. How can anyone say there aren't double standards after England's lock's head got trampled on by a Kiwi and nothing happened?
By Anonymous, at December 24, 2007 12:23 am
haha Tana's face he's like *gasp* red card ooooooh!
By Anonymous, at January 29, 2008 7:04 pm
Thats football not rugby. Disgraceful all round. The sending off, the refereeing for not blowing up when he was offside, spencers little push and the 'ooooh' taking the piss.
By Anonymous, at March 06, 2008 2:47 pm
The PLayer was on the wrong side and he got what was coming to him.
although it was vicious i think it should of been a sin bin not a red card.
By Anonymous, at March 16, 2008 12:42 pm
what a joke, he kneed him downwards...it wasnt a proper knee, get out the way u stupid NZer and get on the right side of the ruck, u deserve it for slowin the ball down.
Chek out big lawrence nailing spencer...sweet, u dont scrap with england if you want whats best for you!!
By Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 8:10 pm
how is it that most ppl get yellows for using their boots which have studs poking through nd he gets a yellow for a knee dosent make sence if ya ask me?
By Anonymous, at May 29, 2008 3:56 pm
typical new zealand, ali williams got off scot free when he did something similar to josh lewsey, but when he did it in a club game against a fellow kiwi he got banned for weeks.
just cant take getting beaten by england.
go win a world cup or something, you haven't done that in a while!

That's an absolute joke - if you're on the wrong side of the ruck, or lying on the ball, you should be fair game as long as they don't touch your head or nackers. Bullshit call.
By HM, at March 03, 2010 2:51 pm
England Sucks! I cant believe they have made it into the top 5 rankings.
