Classic Punch ups From the Past - Buck Shelford vs Huw Richards

Buck Shelford was renound for being an All Black hardman. In 1987 when the All Blacks played Wales at Ballymore in the World Cup Semi-Final, the result was 49-6 but was remembered more for Shelford flooring Welsh lock Huw Richards late in the match.

When Shelford spied Richards and Gary Whetton having a skirmish – the latter alleged the Welshman grabbed his wedding tackle in a maul – he decided to put an end to their frolicking and felled Richards with a well placed blow to the head.

Though Shelford was also belted by a Welsh player, he remained on his feet and on the field. Richards was not so lucky. After a brief visit to la la land, he woke up to discover referee Kerry Fitzgerald had sent him off for provoking the incident.

Remarkably, Shelford escaped censure by the officials and played a major role in the All Blacks winning the final the following weekend.

  • Decent punch. Ironically, the Welsh no 5, Richards was sent off for punching - Shelford got away with decking him!

  • good punch but he completely blind sided him: not fair.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 13, 2007 9:07 pm

  • Cheating scum! Welsh players aren't dirty. He should have been sent off for punching not Richards.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 25, 2007 11:05 pm

  • Absolutely love it... that wasn't a cheap shot...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 15, 2007 12:20 pm

  • as cheap as they come, totally blindsided!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 15, 2007 11:02 pm

  • typical kiwi, totally from the side when the welsh bloke wasn't looking. poor show!

By Anonymous Howesy, at May 27, 2007 5:38 pm

  • hows that giving him a reputation as a hardman? any twat can punch someone when they arent looking.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 29, 2007 11:34 am

  • the all blacks always get away with everything. When Lote Tuqiri spears Richie McCaw the ref's all over it. When Tana Umaga and Keven Mealamu double spear tackle Brian O'Driscoll and cause him to have a shoulder reconstruction the ref doesn't do anything at all. Not even a yellow card.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 31, 2007 12:09 am

  • as usual us welsh start it and always end up losing it

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 03, 2007 6:02 pm

  • I bet all of yous are english fuckheads, useless cunts all of yous a pussies, that was a nice punch, that nailed the fuckhead,he was the one that started it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 05, 2007 8:58 am

  • Listen you antipodean fuckwitt, only a spineless twat like you would condone punching a man who isn't looking! you've probably never played the game and are a fat useless podgy wimp!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 19, 2007 8:28 pm

  • now now girls.. lets not get our knickers in a twist

By Blogger Sammy, at June 24, 2007 12:14 pm

  • Listen Sammy stop sitting on the fence are you italian? either get involved or shut the fuck up, we're here to voice our opinions not be a fucking referee...

    ps... are you gay?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 25, 2007 10:56 pm

  • All these Southern Hemisphere pussies seem to think it makes them "hard" to twat someone who isnt looking? Maybe it's cos they're all descendants of scum convicts?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 03, 2007 7:24 pm

  • Are you watching the same video? Richards quite clearly takes Gary Wheaton out of the scrum and starts to punch while his head is still down and you talk about not looking, he deserved what he got. Only one player came to Richards defence, so who are the pussies? Where did those scum convicts (that were sent to Australia by the way) come from? Probably a bit closer to your home than ours I would suggest!! Sending an Englishman to Australia does not make him Australian.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 12, 2007 7:09 am

  • let us not worry about the welsh number 1 that comes in to "blind side" Shelford! huh? although come to think of it it was a pretty pansy punch! i guess if you want to blind side someone they should learn from Shelford!!! great action!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 16, 2007 4:38 am

  • anonymous hardmen leave your name, shelford was and will remain a rugby hardman and great number 8 well better than zinny. I'd like to see u lye still with your testicles hanging out while the doc stitched you up on field with no anaesthetic without screaming in pain.

the cheating welsh bag of shit deserved it, you wouldn't stand there and watch one of your mates take a beating you'd stop it

    By Anonymous H, at July 20, 2007 11:55 pm

  • H your full of shit, and judging from some of your other pearls of wisdom- left on some of the other vodeos- you clearly know very little about the modern game of rugby union. On behalf of myself and all the other rugby loving public we would appreciate it if you left this site and never came back.

I thank you in advance of you sodding off.

  • lets just get one thing straight. the toughest country in the world is canada

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 19, 2007 1:06 am

  • well if they started playing a game without wearing ridiculously sized pads covering every inch of their body........ still no. but if you meant it as a joke then its actually very funny.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 01, 2007 2:05 pm

  • Here we have a welsh player pull a kiwi out of the ruck, swing several times CHEAPLY FROM THE BACK AND SIDE, then get knocked out! haha Good job!! The Welsh are useless anyway!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 12, 2007 3:37 am

  • Ste?!? Do you even have a clue? Don't come on here and start ranting on about how you obviously know the 'modern game', you probably were a pussy on the feild like you sound now! Go put your pansy comments on a flower website would ya!! hahahahahaha

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 12, 2007 3:42 am

  • i'm a welshman but sorry fella's, if u throw a punch expect to be hit. HE WOZ HIT.

cracker! also i woz coached by a new zealander, awesome guy

By Blogger fozzie, at September 23, 2007 5:41 pm

  • wat r u bitching about! if sum1 gets punched they deserve one back fair an square

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 24, 2007 7:57 am

  • I don't think the punch speaks to Shelford's reputation as a "hardman". It wasn't a squared-up punch, so he doesn't earn points in my book.

What it REALLY says is that Huw Ricards (Welsh #5) got what he deserved. Three-plus punches at the base of the scrum on Buck's teammate.

You throw those, EXPECT to get one you didn't really see coming.

Nothing for/against Shelford on this one. This should really be titled "Huw Ricards gets what's coming to him".

Of course, we don't know what precipitated the punches.. Perhaps a punch to the b*llocks from the kiwi, a stamp on the foot, no clue...

Then again, maybe a sheep joke Ricards took personally..

By Anonymous Cheyanquí, at October 11, 2007 4:42 pm

  • Shelford was protecting his team mate.

The Welsh were just antsy because that day they were thrashed like no top-tier team had ever been thrashed before.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 13, 2007 8:06 am

  • Fair play to him, he was standing up for his teammate. I've always been taught that if you're going to fight at rugby then you do it as a team!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 27, 2008 12:57 am

  • That was a mega sly punch lol, and huw richards thinks so aswell, he said, he wud ave decked the bastard, if he didnt catch him on the sly.

    Hes me uncle :D

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 9:08 pm

  • Im welsh, i idolize buck shelford, what a man/machine! my fathers told me stories about him since i was a teen. Amazing player!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 01, 2008 6:33 am

  • Nice punch on that moustachioed twat Norster, but Shelford was clearly shit scared when the big welsh number 4 Moriarty asked him to explain himself at the end of the melee.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 22, 2008 1:59 am

  • oops, that should be Richards not Norster ... Richards wasnt a twat, more of a nonce really

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 22, 2008 2:01 am

  • defo blindsided him - but deserved

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 11, 2008 5:36 pm

  • Punch someone.....deserve one back if not two!!im welsh, who cares what country hes from,Richards was in the wrong to start with and got what he deserved from Buck Shelford!i play rugby and if someone punches my team mate i wdnt think twice about ramming one into his cheek bone!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 05, 2008 1:59 pm

  • Absolutely brilliant. All the welsh wingeing as if they were Poms. It was hilarious at the time and even better now. Looking after your mates is what it's all about.

By Anonymous londonkiwi, at July 08, 2008 8:52 pm

  • big buck dishing out some punishment. ha ha ha love it, wealsh players lying all over the pitch.

  • Buck is a legend of the game - and i am a die hard Wallabies supporter.
The guy is a hero of mine.
He floors the welsh guy and cops one in the mouth but doesnt even flinch.
    Go The Buck!
More refs should learn from this as well...he lets the guy who started it cop what he deserves and then send him off after he wakes up - BRILLIANT.

By Anonymous Ed, at October 08, 2010 6:07 am

  • thats funny as, first the welsh player starts it by punching a unsuspecting all black 3 times, one punch by buck puts him on his arse. then the welsh prop blindsides buck who barely flinches, the welsh prop then gets punched by another ab and is sat on his arse as well. and what is even funnier is that welsh supporters are calling buck cheap for backing up his team mate after 3 clear cheap shots from a welshman are what started the whole thing.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 08, 2010 5:41 pm

  • CHEAP SHOT! I'd be embarrassed of this vid if I was Shelford.

By Blogger Mufasa, at October 09, 2010 12:54 am

  • Two things that strike me as amusing from the comments made to this video:
    1) That was a funny looking scrum...
    2) Everyone missed the elbows to the face Huw recieved before lashing out...

But I do agree you look after your mates. But when its one on one, just break it up and get on with the game!
Otherwise you got to wait longer for a pint!!! :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 11, 2010 9:33 pm

  • bring back buck!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 12, 2010 2:09 am

  • waw!

i had never seen this accident.
in the past, the recommandation was to sent off the 1st puncher, so it was curiously normal..
Nowadays, shelforld would be banned for few weeks.

should interesting to make a top 10 of "classic" fights of the game ;)

By Anonymous Flooz, at October 12, 2010 2:40 pm

  • There's alot of people saying richards got what he deserved but he took a few albows to the face before he lashed out and he'd finished dishing it out when shelford banged him, no need from shelford clearly took the cheap shot.
And if he's so hard why did he sh*t his pants when moriarty walked over??

By Anonymous John Hayes best prop ever!, at October 13, 2010 9:15 pm

  • Not sure if I'm watching the same video as everyone else but doesnt the whole episode go something like this; maul is formed, kiwi elbows several times a welsh player who has every right to be there, welsh player pulls kiwi out, gives him few little tickles to say don't do that again, fight breaks up, kiwi blindsides welsh player (as stated by the commentator), knocks him down then takes a good punch himself, walks away and then clearly looks worried when actually face to face with someone. This from a 'winging pom' who actually values one of the unwritten rules of rugby...respect the opposition but give em f**k all. Love the Welsh passiom and love the kiwi skill. (We're still gonna win WC 2011 :)

By Anonymous jimbo, at October 14, 2010 7:18 pm

  • "clearly looks worried" HA! what a load of shit. end of the day 2 welsh players end up on their arses whilst ab players are left unfazed.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 17, 2010 3:11 pm

  • What elbow to the face? There are no elbows to the face? You guys are just making it up.

Why should Shelford 'square up' to Richards. He was stepping in to stop that nonsense, which he did.

And of course he had the best answer of all. Look at the scoreboard boys: 49-6
