Sivivatu flips JW Jonker into next week
Chiefs winger Sitiveni Sivivatu received a sending off on the weekend for this spectacular 'tackle' on Cheetahs center JW Jonker. Spectacular only for the fact that Jonker got about as high as a Matfield lineout jump.
Recently there was quite a bit of discussion on here after the dangers of this type of flip tackle after I posted the Ross Rennie hit on Brian O'Driscoll. Some felt it wasn't really dangerous to toss a player over your shoulder whereas others agreed it's not part of the game.
What this tackle shows though is that once again, if you're not bringing the player back down to ground safely, there's going to be yellow cards, citings, and of course, injuries.
In this case, Jonker wasn't injured luckily and Sivivatu's yellow should be sufficient, with no citing needed I'd say. Some may think otherwise though, particularly if Jonker had been badly injured, which could so easily have happened.

yeh, it was bad as everyone can see, or had the potential to be very bad....but was i the only one that found it pretty f*cking funny??

Good reffing. Clear yellow for not 'grounding' him, but nothing malicious and far from being a spear tackle. It's actually difficult to imagine just how Sivivatu could have brought him down, once the speed of Jonker had taken him over the top and behind him.

Having seen Ma'a Nonu's yellow card on the weekend for a high tackle, for which he was cited and subsequently received a suspension of one week, I am surprised that Sivivatu was not, at the very least, cited for this tackle. The tackle here would seem to have a lot more scope for potential injuries than that of Nonu, and I believe that for the sake of consistency, a citation was required.

Agree with the dude above - this cant be better than Nonu's tackle surely?
Not saying both deserved suspensions, but Kirchener got a red for his - what is required is consistency.

That should have been red, could have broken his neck.
And in answer to no.7 "was i the only one that found it funny?" ...well i hope the answer is yes

ye maybe ma'a nonu's more likely to get cited as it seems every week he does a bad tackle, hes got history of it so more likely to be intentional and deserves citing whereas sivivatu's first?

should be a red....just because he didn't land on his head....doesn't mean it couldn't happen! if it had there would be an uproar..and you would all be saying how sivivatu should be banned for life. i hope you understand me on this one...and of course its all imo :)

Hits like that are obviously dangerous, but could he have done anything about it? I guess he needs to stay lower when he makes hits? I don't know . . . still pretty entertaining.

i didn't think it was that bad. yellow yes. any more no. it was a tackle that went wrong. the ross rennie 1 was very different in the fact tha BOD's power took him over rennie stayed more still were sivivatu drove up. sivivatu just did a little 2 much up and 2 little forward so jonker's speed carried him over the top.

oh come on, if the guy had broken his neck, or his wrist or the ground opened up and he fell to a firey death in the depths of the world it ofcourse would not be funny.....but the fact he is fine, do people not see the amusing side?!?

yeah; not malicious + sorta funny - all aside when are the chiefs gonna pull their fingers out

Just watched this video again, cannot believe it wasn't a red. He flipped him over his shoulder and just let go of him, that's one of the worst tackles i've ever seen.

its just unlucky the momentum of the attacking player was to great to be controlled when sivivatu went low and to the guy above if you think that was the worst tackle youve seen you need to watch more rugby XD

What I see on the slow motion replay:
Notice at 1:09 that Sivivatu lets go of the player's leg, and looks for the ball? Essentially, Sivivatu gave up on protecting the player.
Not saying this was malicious, but if you pick a player up, getting that player down safely must be Priority One.

it should of been a red, nonu's wasnt terrible but u must think how strong he is up 2 sivivatu
