Juan Martin Hernández takes out Alesana Tuilagi

Juan Martin Hernandez of Stade Francais makes this brilliant try saving tackle on 113kg Leicester winger Alesana Tuilagi in the 2006 Heinekein Cup Quarter Final.

Similar hit to the Josh Lewsey classic try saver on Jean De Villiers.

The scariest part about all of this is that when searching for pics of Hernandez to post on here all I came across were half naked men covered in very, very small towels.

  • The pink jerseys and flowered shirts, not to mention the Moulin Rouge dancing girls at Parc des Prince and the enourmous sprayed-pink elephant that led Stade Français onto the field for their H Cup tie with Sale earlier this year might not be to everyone's likely and nor are Max Guazzini's other publicity stunts such as the calendar but I moved to Paris seven years ago and was quite depressed to note that rugby was very much a secondary sport here (all the good rugby was and most of it still is, played in the South West of France) but since then the sport has had such a boost in terms of financial input and following - almost entirely down to Guazzani's marketing of the game in Paris - and now rugby is well and truly a fundamental part of life in Paris. Not bad considering they only have one team here really. Next year will be interesting with the resurrection of Metro racing 92 (formerly Racing Club de Paris). If a club has to wear pink and the players pose naked in order to establish a marketable identity then why not? It's not known as Gay Paris for nothing, you know?

Tell Roncero, Parisse, Bergamasco, Skrela, Auradou, Blin, James or any other of the bottomless pit of hard b******* Stade Français have in their ranks that you find their floral approach to rugby "sad" and I'd be impressed. In the meantime, keep your homophobia out of rugby - it is precisely the willingness to play on connotations of homosexuality that have allowed this club to survive.

Ask anyone at Border Reivers if they'd prefer to be wearing pink floral jerseys next year or (as is the case) be out of a job due to the inexistence of marketing strategies in order to keep the game alive in the region (let alone innovative marketing strategies) and I'm sure the response would be resoundingly in favour of the "gay" rugby shirts.

Max Guazzani may be a lot of things and I don't agree with half of what the guy says but he sure knows how to manage a rugby club.

  • question? why is it only in slow motion? i saw this game live. in real speed it showed that tuilag didn't have time to adjust. for those who actually no how to run a ball, you would know hernandez would've lost that encounter had tuilagi adjusted. still a good hit though!

  • "You sad bastards.

They are wearing pink jerseys in support of cancer awareness."

The only team to wear pink jerseys was the Newcastle Falcons during the 2006-2007 season (One game). The Mrs still wears hers now. Disco is bang on the money, and hey they aren't that bad a shirt.

    Still a good tackle though

  • If Ewen McKenzie gets the coaching job at Stade Francais, he'll join a rugby club as flamboyant off the field as it is on it.

Much like I did, Ewen has an opportunity to join the French side after being shown the door by his Super 14 team. On a Sunday night in 2000, the Reds told me my services were no longer required. A week later, I found myself addressing players on a Parisian field, despite the fact I didn't know a word of French.

To say it was a culture shock is an understatement. The language barrier, the length of the season and the French lifestyle are all very different to what I was used to, but I soon learned Stade Francais also like to do things a little differently.

Team owner Max Guazzini is a flamboyant entrepreneur with a very interesting history. A lawyer by trade, Max was a pop singer who had a hit in the mid 1970s - and knows absolutely nothing about rugby. It doesn't stop him from interviewing every player that comes to the club and having the final say on recruitment, he loves his players and is very jealous about them. But Max is no fool and fully expects to win. And he certainly is a character.

I've been to a few pre-season camps in my day, but Stade Francais are the first to hold theirs in Cannes, on the Riviera, with Monte Carlo just up the road. On one occasion, Max and the players were socialising after a hard day's training. When a player was getting a little amorous with a lady at the open-air disco, I joked his behaviour may not have been totally professional. Max leaned in and whispered to me: "John, there is sex, and there is love - do not confuse the two." I hope the player took that advice!

Stade Francais are also well known for their attire. In 2000, it was white socks, red pants, and iridescent blue jerseys with lightning bolts on them. They have now graduated to pink jerseys with hibiscus flowers. You can't miss them!

Equally as famous is the Stade Francais calendar. It first came out seven or eight years ago and featured the players, oiled up and wearing very little. I can already see Ewen reclining on a couch wearing nothing but a smile and a strategically placed mini football! But all jokes aside, it is a huge seller throughout Europe and continues to be a cash cow.

Max is fanatical about the team and will give it every chance to succeed. Max has revived the club. After claiming their last premiership in the 1908, Stade Francais finally won another one 90 years later with Max at the helm. He's transformed it from a lower-tier team to one of the glamour clubs in Europe.

If Ewen gets the job, his sole focus will be coaching - Max will ensure he has all the tools, sponsors and infrastructure to succeed. But while he'll be at every home game, it's unlikely they'll see him at away fixtures because he doesn't like to fly. Although he is an eccentric character, Max has the players' full respect.

I was fortunate that I tasted success in my two-year stint at the club, but I've seen the other side of Max as well. When we got beaten in the European Cup final after the bell, Max was distraught, as we all were. He took it hard. He went into hiding and wasn't seen for six or seven days.

One thing Ewen won't want to experience is a home loss - it is a real loss of face. On one occasion when Stade Francais were playing Perpignan, the supporters tried to tip our bus over on the way to the ground. So Ewen, if you do get the Stade Francais job, a great adventure awaits. Bon voyage!

  • After all his efforts to stop Juan Martin to sign with Leicester Tigers, he was successful but just till 2009. Unless Juan Martin changes his mind, or Marcelo Loffreda looses his job, because all the problems that he is facing in Welford Road, I take for granted that Juani will join The Tigers in 2009. Not right now, just because "the boss" is so infatuated with him, that he will do everything to have JMH just "for him". Nevertheless, Juani will continue playing in Stade as he has done lately, very successful, but at the end if nothing wrong happens in Leicester, he will travel to England, which is this dream. Poor Max he will be heartbroken.

By Blogger AntoinedelaTremoille, at May 13, 2008 8:50 pm

  • Max Guazzini is not a real leader of the rugby world, he maybe a successful business man, without any morals and ethical values, but he is making an immnense fortune from Stade. His flamboyant style and his way to retain players like Juan Martin, make us believe that he is quite wird, if not something worst. Stade is loosing many of their players, David Skréla, Frédérick Marichalak, Agustin Pichot, and even his coach. Guazzini should be running a cabaret like Le Moulin Rouge not a rugby club, but a cabaret for ladies and queers, not real men.
