The dirty stuff from Cardiff

On Saturday we saw Wales take the Six Nations championship in a historic match for all the right reasons. Records were broken, milestones were achieved, and both teams played some good rugby.

There were two notable blotches on the perfect day though, namely Lee Byrne taking a forearm in the face from Damien Traille, and Gavin Henson getting to grips with French flanker Fulgence Ouedraogo.

The first incident was a bit of a strange one, with Byrne giving Traille some kind of push with the arm, then Traille showing him how it's done. The funniest part of all of it being Brian Moore's comment. 'Footballer.'

Gavin Henson's tackle that got him ten minutes in the bin was a bit more malicious, or perhaps even clumsy. Whatever the intention and outcome, it was dirty and a player of his quality should know better. It was so blatantly high that Ouedraogo actually almost snuck underneath it.

Result aside, I thought some of you would like to see these incidents again, and mainly, have a chuckle at another Brian Moore classic.

  • Love the "footballer" comment :D

  • Yeah, he does the old footballer check to see if he's still needed in defense.
Nope, he's not needed so fall on the floor and clutch your face.
Lee had really stepped up in this tournament but let himself down with that.

    Henson's was just dumb.

  • Henson just cant tackle..... not his fault really.

If he cant shoulder charge is is fairly useless.

  • I took Traille's arm as an early sign of frustration. I can't imagine him doing this if the French were dominating. After only 10 mins it seemed as if the French knew they were going to lose. Wales' self-belief was telling.

Henson's was just careless and sloppy, not malicious.

  • Footballer. Henson too with hair like that.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 12:46 pm

  • haha the video doesnt need the henson tackle.....the footballer comment was enough to make it a good one:)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 12:50 pm

  • Brian Moore is a twat who has always hated the Welsh because they can play better than England and always will. The footballer remark is just another cheep shot at the Welsh because they where doing better than England in yet another fantastic six nations.

Henson's high tackle was just a bit stupid but not malicious and he should not have been sent off. It was a penalty at most.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 1:02 pm

  • Had to rewind it over and over again...lol

By Blogger Don, at March 18, 2008 1:10 pm

  • How insecure, reactionary and plain dumb was the comment above from yet another 'anonymous'?

The comment was not a xenophobic slight against the Welsh. The fact that you think it is reflects more on your own insecurities than it does on Moore's prejudices.

Stop embarrassing the Welsh and yourself.

By Blogger Kerivoula, at March 18, 2008 1:18 pm

  • 'anonymous':

Brian Moore doesn't hate the Welsh, that's just a soundbite that seems comfortable for us Welsh to use. Moore is actually very fair to us, did you not hear how pleased he was when Williams scored the try on Saturday?

What Moore doesn't like is the creeping element of football into rugby, which i'm afraid Lee Byrne is prone to. And I agree with him.

    Henson did deserve a yellow.

  • "Brian Moore is a twat who has always hated the Welsh because they can play better than England and always will. The footballer remark is just another cheep shot at the Welsh because they where doing better than England in yet another fantastic six nations"

Maybe, but Moore is just as critical and mocking of England when they deserve it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 1:27 pm

  • Didnt like Byrnes reaction, as has been said a bit to much of the football mentality. He got swatted by Hines as well and made the most of it. Not needed.

Henson was clumsy, probably did deserve a yellow. Not sure about his hair being that bad, for really bad hair look no further than Strettle. An alarming barnet with no rhyme or reason.
    Does Rugbydump controller hate Henson?

  • I'm going to have to agree with anonymous slightly.

Even as a Moore fan. If you saw the England game where Wilko took a similar dive, if not worse... Moore wouldn't acknowledge Wilko took a football dive, and repeatedly had a go at the other player for breaking the rules.

Where as in this video he cares little about the challenge, and draws a ton of attention to the dive.

Not that those 2 make him biased towards Wales. I think he just loves everying England lol

  • To the "brian moore is a twat" comment, yes he is a bit. But the rest of your comment just made all of us welsh look like idiots.
I doubt very much he's racist towards us, he cheered when Shane scored. Lee Byrne does act like a footballer and therefor he is also a "twat". Henson was stupid and often does this sort of tackle and he deserved a yellow card.

  • i hate lee byrne (yes its mainly irrational) but i thought Moore was a bit harsh on him.

Henson has one of the worst tackling styles in international rugby. a shame as he's a quality player

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 2:41 pm

  • Brian Moore, to me, is a great guy, and I love to hear him and Eddie Butler do commentary together.

Brian's just as comfortable ripping into the English when they screw up, so please don't come out here saying he 'hates the Welsh'.

Classic commentary; you could hear the contempt in the 'footballer'.

By Blogger Sander, at March 18, 2008 2:44 pm

  • Henson is too much prensent in Rugbydump for hard tackles

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 3:10 pm

  • lee byrne is a coward and gavin henson can't tackle.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 3:17 pm

  • You lot all run at Gav with a ball in hand and tell me he can't tackle. He was one of our defensive captains throughout the tournament, and we conceded only two tries, one from an overthrown lineout.
He is a good tackler, but I'll be the first to admit he can often be culpable of looking for the big hit, and consequently any small misjudgement can result in a penalty.
I don't think any of his challenges have been malicious.

Why are people commenting on his hair? Who hasn't had a dodgy barnet? Fuck it, does it matter, is it relevant?

As for Brian Moore, yes he is a shit commentator (love it when he starts talking about backs moves! The shit he spouts is unbelievable, what does he know about it?). He's also biased, but I do think he's reasonably fair, and the footballer comment is a fair one, even if it pisses me off. He's nothing like as annoying as Eddie Butler either.

By Blogger Will Topps, at March 18, 2008 3:30 pm

  • The clip missed off another classic piece of commentary from Moore. As Gavin Henson was running off to the bin the camera switched to a shot of a smiling Charlotte Church to which he said 'It's not funny!'

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 3:53 pm

  • i love the welsh team, but i hate so much byrne,at least he is just a footballer.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 4:23 pm

  • Pz i saw that and when moore said that it did make me laugh abit lol

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 6:00 pm

  • That footballer comment was spot on. There's an awful lot of oversensitive defense of the Welsh in these comments, someone piss in your cheese-on-toast?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 6:11 pm

  • I think Brian Moore has made a fair comment when he said that Byrne is a footballer. personally i would like to see Brian moore get hit in the chops by a 16st 6ft 4 centre and stand.

Henson was a bit stupid in that BUT he has been key in Wales' unstopable defence.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 6:59 pm

  • Brian Moore has 2 make his mind up. Last week at the scotland game, a similar thing happened 2 johnny wilkinson and he was saying how bad it was etc etc. Same thing happens here and it is nothing and the guy is acting. Consistancy please!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 9:42 pm

  • Ok guys, i think we can all agree that a lot of people like Brian Moore and a lot of people hate him....how about concentrating on the point of the video where Lee Byrnes dives like a footballer.....it was not necessary, i have seen him take some hard tackles and get up fine, he gets a tap and he is down like a footballer!

Also guys if you are going to go on and on about Moore do you honestly think that having an unbiased commentator is better?!? having someone who is partially supporting a team whether its Brian Moore, Jonathon Davies, Keith Wood always adds a little spice and interest to the game. I fall asleep with some of these mono-tone unbiased RSA commentators!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 10:31 pm

  • Yeah, I think people are being a little bit too precious and sensitive.

I doubt Brian Moore hates the Welsh. Neither is he completely unbiased (nor is Jonathan Davies, Keith Wood, Andrew Nichol etc etc) BUT - one thing they do have is an appreciation of good rugby played by the rules (written or unwritten) and you can be sure they know more about rugby than the majority of us.

Moore is simply commenting on one unwritten aspect of the rugby code (acting like a footballer) and the Henson tackle shows the breaking of a written one. That's all, he isn't showing any real 'opinion' on the players in doing so.

  • Why didn't the thread end with Geraint's comment. I'm going to repost it as there's nothing more to say on the subject :

  • I really don't get this thing with Henson's hair, he is far from the worst

This years Super14 is full of Mullets and Strettle should be sectioned for his

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 21, 2008 12:32 am

  • I think this has gone a little bit too far. Lee Byrne is a quality act but is prone to the odd footy dive. Not the worst thing in the world, but Brian moore was spot on. Besides, Brian always slams anyone who dives. regardless of nationality.
With reagrds to Hensons challenge, it was clumsy and being that high, whether intentional or not, the ref had no choice but to give him ten minutes. These comments about his hair and being a poor tackler are ridiculous. He's the form centre anywhere at the moment. Do you think Ashton would wait for a minute to put him in a 12 for England?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 23, 2008 11:55 pm

  • Henson apparently has 'bad hair' because he was waiting to play well enough to get a man-of-the-match performance, which he got against saracens. I think he got that by pushing Andy Farrell away like he was a drunk tramp.
Anyway, surely there was dirtier stuff in the last weekend of the six nations than that?

I don't know if Byrne was being a girl, but if he was (which I usually try to deny - maybe Traille did actually hit him quite hard on the noggin?) then it is embarrassing more than anything. And Henson's was undeniably high but definitely not malicious. Don't suppose the ref was swayed by the large contingent of French supporters in that area of the stadium?

The best commentary on that day was the Andy Nicol and Andrew Cotter in the Scotland V Italy game which was a bloody brilliant game.

  • to all the people who think lee byrne is a puff.i found out that with the w.r.u setup if they r hurt even the slightest bit then u have togo to the floor if your hurt thhe slightest.mind u though that was a bit of aa footy move.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 17, 2008 11:37 pm

  • moore is a prime example of whats wrong with comentators. he thinks that he is on the pitch for god's sake. he kind of ruined a few games this six nations for me.

-Scotland v England contsant mocking of english players descisions becasue england were loosing.
-England v France shouting at players because they have moved from thier original position to a more strategical one, england were loosing again.
the guy needs to learn that not many people like him and that he is not the all knowing god of rugby. if he knew how to do what he is telling player to do he would be on the bloody pitch playing or at least coaching a team..

i've had that kind of hit on me and they are bloody painful. it wasn't a slap. he was hit by that wrist of the player. and to all those who point out that lee looked to see if he was needed to defend, you have just spotted the trade mark signs of a dedicated player who is willing to go through pain to try and help his country win!!!
