Alessandro Troncon floors Peter Stringer in 2001

As Ireland meet Italy at Croke Park on Saturday in the opener of the Six Nations 2008, I thought I'd pull out a clip from a previous meeting between the two sides from 2001.

Five minutes from the end of the encounter, in which Ireland won 41-22, Italian scrum half Alessandro Troncon soured the occasion with an extravagant swinging punch on opposite number Peter Stringer.

Troncon was red carded for his actions, which resulted in the citing committee dishing out a three week ban for the punch which sent Stringer to the floor clutching his face.

We hopefully won't see a repeat of this on Saturday, as both Ireland and Italy need to focus on playing some good rugby, with both sides still having a lot to prove after disappointing World Cup performances.

NOTE: Apologies for the delayed audio on this one

  • "extravagant"???...it's extravagant the way that Mr Stringer use to obstruct Tronky movement!!
And we also hopefully for next Saturday to have not to see this kind of imagine... from both side!

  • you can see troncon imediately realises he's done wrong. if your losing and it's the end of the game and someone tugs on your shirt off the ball you're bound to lash out.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 11:12 am

  • Ahh so sweet to see Sneaky Midget (yes that's Stringer) getting flattened...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 11:22 am

  • I do agree with Lock#5#. Moreover if you check sec 43 on the video (top right). You will notice Sringer was already "discussing" with Lo Cicero (#1).

  • However much I like the guy, Troncon was always a bit of a loose cannon. Look at his last game in the Italy shirt. The man was looking for a fight at every opportunity. Fair play he was pumped up, and it was a must win WC game but that was just daft.

  • I'm surprised Stringer doesn't get punched like that more frequently, he plays like a spoilt little child

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 12:26 pm

  • I dunno if "spoilt little child" is very accurate. He's mouthy, in-your-face and an absolute pest, but he rarely if ever gives away yards for lip to the ref and is extremely effective in his position. I doubt there's a rugby supporter in the world who wouldn't want their 9 to have all of the abovementioned qualities.

  • a good shove away would have helped...Stringer got knocked the f out on that one. Kinda hurts...lol

By Blogger Don, at January 31, 2008 1:03 pm

  • he got what he asked for

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 1:32 pm

  • I doubt very much that he said "can you punch me in the face please?"

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 2:10 pm

  • Love this, Stampy Stringer getting it. Live by the sword get knocked out. Love the bleating paddy commentators, its so awful, disgrace etc. No suprise I cant stand Stringer, one of the most overated dwarfs to ever play the game.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 2:42 pm

  • He deserved that punch!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 3:22 pm

  • Not trying to "pretty up" the game, but I find it schizophrenic that they go out of their way to punish a well-deserved punch to the face, but not address both root causes (Stringer, and Troncon
    s temper)

Stringer's play was also cynical. If not give him a one-match ban, at least log a warning on his Disciplinary Record.

Either let Troncon self-police, or punish both of them.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 3:44 pm

  • Troncon's ban was 30-days. I think the 3 weeks came from him missing three 6N fixtures.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 3:44 pm

  • "one of the most overrated dwarfs to ever play the game"...hehe...Stringer is such a bastard.(in the good way).
Oh!mental note: never piss off little Tronky!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 3:48 pm

  • A scrum half always needs to be a bastard and lives on the edge. Troncon is stupid to let himself be challenged. The game is also what the ref is able to see, a little shirt pulling is difficult to see, the punch can't be ignored.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 4:39 pm

  • I'm sure the Irish will think of a way of blaming the English for this. Roll on the 6 nations...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 4:41 pm

  • Lol at all the fools - yeah yeah, he got smacked, Ireland also raped Italy so I coulden't care less, just shows how pathetic Troncon is, a better man woulden't have lashed out. The scrum halfs job is to be an annoying little pain in the arse, such as life you either deal with it, or as Troncon demonstrates so well, you get sent off.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 5:13 pm

  • At keast the 'Paddy' commentators are always fair, not like the English ones, always talking about how great they always are even when they are shit.

Why would Irish people blame the English for this? dont be such an A-hole.

Scotland will win the 6 nations this year, mark my words..........

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 5:33 pm

  • It's kind of hard to feel sorry for Strniger getting a clump, he's a niggly little sh*t, like al good scrum halves should be.

And while i'd never condone punching another player, he comes form offside, and obstruct a player with intentional foul play. he should have been yellow carded for his misdemeanour as well.

Anyway, silly over reaction by Troncon, but as i said hard to feel sorry for stringer having watched him punch kick and stamp on half the Magners League, heini cup and 6nations players over the last few years.

    :)

  • goodnumber10,

I gotta ask.. who is a bigger overall pest, Stringer or Steve Devine?

Watching S14 last season, Devine was probably the guy who I wanted to see get popped more than anyone out there -- more than any pretty-boy Aussie or meateating Jaapie.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 7:39 pm

  • he deserved it

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 9:48 pm

  • I agree with the guy who said Stringer is overated. Yeah punching bad etc... but when I read the title of the video, i couldnt wait to watch it!! And the reason was that it was Peter Srringer!!! Stringer cannot pass= not a very good scrum half!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 10:03 pm

  • What would you expect the RTE commentators to say ? They're quite fair in general. If that had been The other way round (hypothetically!) then the reaction would have been the same. They also mention stringer grabbing troncon's shirt and being offside....

God I'd take the irish commentators over the BBC ones any day(excluding ryle nugent of course).
    Third centre

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 11:18 pm

  • oh and any chance of Ireland's tries against italy from last year's 6N game ? Or BOD's tackle on England's full back ?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 31, 2008 11:21 pm

  • BOOM HEADSHOT!!!

"can you punch me in the face please!"

    hahahaha!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 01, 2008 12:28 am

  • "Stringer's passing is crap"....? You avin a laugh? That's why he's in the team, because his passing is good, he's not a brilliant player but you cannot question his passing ability. Don't see how anyone can think he deserved a yellow card as well just for bloody shirt pulling. You're not football fans are you?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 01, 2008 12:46 pm

  • Good to see that little Leprechaun getting it!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 01, 2008 1:33 pm

  • it doesn't look like he meant to pop him as hard as he did. More like just a quick reaction gone wrong.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 01, 2008 4:33 pm

  • troncon! our national pride!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 03, 2008 7:47 pm

  • well done troncon. Stringer really annoys me and hes so cheeky he deserves all that he got on this occasion and hopefully for many more occasions

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 03, 2008 9:46 pm

  • stringer is a great player and all who dont think so say it to his face!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 13, 2008 7:11 pm

  • Tronky really is our pride!!!
101 caps whit Italy and his first international match was the first for Gregan too!!!
It's not the first time that Stringer get's knocked by italians, the last one was Parisse a few years ago

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 26, 2008 5:16 pm

  • haha i like the way the english are waiting for the irish to blame them for something

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 09, 2008 2:55 pm

  • stringers a lil weasel and deserves more of that

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 03, 2008 4:27 am

  • "Umm i would?
    hes 5'7" & 78kg
    Im 6'5" & 110kg"

Yeah... anyone can be what they want to be on the internet. I myself am a 7'0 mma fighter with 130 fights, no losses.

Your probably just an obese 40 year old who sits on his ass all day looking at a computer screen.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 14, 2008 2:09 pm

  • U can be 8 foot tall and 300 pounds for all i care but stringer is a professional rugby player who trains every day...

no more needs to be said

Arm chair critic vs pro player

    who would win???

    i could never guess

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 16, 2008 2:02 am

  • I could still crush his puny body in a game of rugby even if hes a pro

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 17, 2008 2:52 am

  • How are the commentators? Blooy whingers. In Australia they'd just be having a laugh. it's just a punch he didn't stab the guy.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 19, 2008 7:05 am

  • Both commentators are irish, and the one that speaks 1st is VERY biased towards the irish teams when he commentates on magners league games.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 20, 2008 2:15 am

  • haha
    great to see that.

the paddy commentators are always so biased, if it was the other way around they would be saying about the shirt pull, surely.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 22, 2008 2:36 pm

  • "you can see troncon imediately realises he's done wrong."

ummm i dont think so, he realises he has been busted by the ref and is trying to weasel his way out....
