David Knox does a Hollywood, sending Os off in 1997
We've all seen what soccer players are like when they get the slightest of nudges, or take a decent tackle - they hold their heads, roll around on the floor, and basically act as if they've either broken a leg or a family member has just died.
Commonly known as a 'Hollywood', acting to get a penalty or more is a common way to trick the ref into thinking the incident was worse than it actually is.
In the 1997 game between the Boks and the Wallabies, flyhalf David Knox took a bit of a late hit from Os Du Randt which in normal circumstances should have just been a penalty, if that. Through his acting, Knox managed to milk a penalty and a crazy yellow card for big Os.
Thankfully I've only seen this type of acting on the rugby field once or twice. Soccer can keep it as far I'm concerned.

Dont see you point, not a lot of acting. Os was late and fell foul of a fussy Ref.

disgraceful

The fact that he laughed really pisses me off. Not condoning a late tackle but it was a slight nudge.
Typical Aussies! All about gamesmanship.

Love the site, but this is a ridiculous entry. He late tackled an exposed outhalf, who went down for less than 10 seconds, and poor old Os should somehow be outraged by this travesy of justice?
He got 10 mins for a late tackle - hardly a lifetime ban.

No point in this post.

seems to be a lot of negativity towards australia here. how many times have seen a failed chip kick go through and the kicker dive into a heap?? backs are all about hollywood. and that particular incident knox gets up straight away and smiles. os got the penalty coz being a prop he should have been able to avoid hitting knox with a 20 metre run up.

you'd be better off putting up Joubert's playacting against Munster !

Still seen yellow cards given for that anyway...but the laughing bit was inexcusable.
By Anonymous, at February 04, 2008 12:19 pm
my intended comment was: theres one more thing you wont see in football- not complaining to ref. but then I saw this joubert clip....cant believe it! horrible, disgraceful, shameful, humiliating.... obnoxious!
that is professionalism...

It was a late hit, and a penalty, but I think what rugbydump are getting at is that he clearly was pretending to be hurt when he wasn't. The fact that he was rolling around on the ground one minute and up and smiling the next is pretty good evidence of this. For anyone who follows English football (God help you) it's similar to Ronaldo getting Rooney sent off at the World Cup and then winking at his team mates - it's the deliberate attempt to cheat that's so annoying.

@ will: i agree,
@ richyo: i think os needs more than 20 meters to stop :P he's like a locomotiv... without the emergency brakes!

Am i wrong for finding this funny?
I mean i hate the blatant faggotry and lack of respect with diving in sports as much as the next man; but there's something about his sinister smile after his brief acting stint that tickles my humour.
If you want someone bad for milking it, Chabal! He'll get on with it if the challenge is legal, but if he's on the end of an illegal challenge he breaks down into audition mode and rolls around all over the place!

Next play someone should have taken Joubert or Knox and clotheslined them. Yellow or red card, yes, but send a message.
I miss the old NHL (National Hockey League) in North America.
If a guy ever pulled this kind of crap there, the opposition would send someone out to really give the guy something to writhe in agony over.
Not thuggery for thuggery's sake.

i know it sucks to see in rugby, but it did make me laugh, Os du Randt knew the guy milked it and was like "you have to be kidding me" but the way Knox looked up, laughed and slapped the ground was pretty funny, kind of reminds me of an old school mate when we played house 7's .......did something similar to me!
so yeh i did find the funny side of this, but im glad its not a common occurance!

i dont think he dived jst got hit then stayed on the ground for a bit afterwards.

I saw this game live, and I know David Knox was a character of the game, therefore appreciate the clip more than others.
Funny how some people don't watch the clip properly, but still feel the need to make dumb comments about it being pointless etc.
You can CLEARLY see that Knox wasn't hurt, but just acted that he was. THAT is the point of this entry my friends.

he was hit late and was open so he was most likely winded, if any of u are calling him a cheat even play rugby then u know when u get winded it only lasts a few seconds then your fine thats why he got up again. as for the laughing if u just got hit late with a shoulder and saw them get sent off your not going 2 feel sorry for the guy are u...

Aussies arent fairplay. That is a fact.
When I lived in Singapour I played against the Australian School's rugby team on numerous occasion, as part of the French school squad.. And I really can remember their lack of sportsmanship.
But it was great playing them anyway :)

he was having a laf!!!! and we all know that the south africans are taught to play dirty and cheat at every part of the game! always have always will!!
By Anonymous, at February 07, 2008 2:02 pm
if you watch carefully Os doesn't try to tackle. He just runs Knox over. That, even if usual with most Southern Hemisphere teams, should be punished. Even so I do think that diving does ruin professional sport and hate to see it on a Rugbypitch.

whoever sed this post was pointless then i'd like 2 see u find a better example other than football.it iz so strange 2 see on a rugby field.

OS was tryin 2 get in his head, beleive me i play fly,and thats the way it is,coaches tell the big hitters to put a lick on the fly, what better way to return the favour and get him yellow carded.
By Anonymous, at April 17, 2008 10:30 pm
slime
By Anonymous, at May 26, 2008 9:50 am
deserved the yellow for the late and no arms charge, i'm sure the ref did not take the yellow out brcause of the acting. The flyhalf there should be punished, in football, altough it is pretty common, acting can be punished with yellow card and is illegal.
By Anonymous, at August 01, 2008 5:48 pm
not a lot wrong with what Knox does! and if a referee's decisions is influenced by how badly the player is hurt then that is ridiculos to!
