Ma'a Nonu spear tackle on Darcy

Ma'a Nonu somehow escaped further punishment after this tackle on Gordon Darcy in 2005. The commitee ruled that the refs penalty and the subsequent chat was enough.

Nonu was booed by Irish fans still incensed at the incident during the Lions tour of New Zealand this year when their captain Brian O'Driscoll was hit by a double tackle in the opening minute of the first test.

Both coaches condemned Nonu's tackle after the game.

"We don't want those sorts of things happening in the game," said All Blacks coach Graham Henry. "I know they're not done deliberately but we need to try and make sure they don't happen."

Ireland coach Eddie O'Sullivan said D'Arcy had been turned upside down.

"It's not safe to do that to anybody," he said. "It's not a pretty sight and a bit scary to see."

  • i was at this game and there wasnt that much booing.we got hammered but got to see some brilliant rugby

By Blogger Unknown, at June 25, 2007 5:30 pm

  • Why do the All Blacks always get away with it?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 25, 2007 7:00 pm

  • Don't be an idiot when you get picked up. Either toss the ball forward and grab the guys head when you go down, or just don't stick your arm out to try and catch 400 pounds coming down into your shoulder. You will separate the thing.

yep thats a sure fire way to tear your intercostal muscles... because you end up getting all of his weight driven through you...

  • To be perfectly fair to Nonu he dind't drive him downwards, he just tipped him, it's very different to a spear tackle as their was no real downward force...

Dont get me wrong it's not safe tipping someone through the horizontal but I don't think there was any intent there...

  • ALL BLACKS KING OF RUGBY we dont get away with anything suk a big dik ur all just jalous cause were number 1

  • Yours ay we'll soon see, who you planing to play 2nd row after chabal messed up what was left of them. As for Mcaw "BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD" cobblers he lies offside and illegally plays the ball hes been lucky till now that he hasnt had a good shoeing cant remember the last time i saw him make a decent tackle.

  • well theirs chris jack, troy flavell, gregg rawlinson, ruben thorne.... the list is endless! and i've seen McCaw smash people all other the place in super 14 rugby! so your comment is pretty invalid really, and im Irish

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 02, 2007 1:33 pm

  • ONLY ONE ON THAT LIST IS AVAILABLE, THIS IS TAKEN FROM ANOTHER ALLBLACKS CLIP INVOLVING CHABAL FROM THIS SITE:
"This means that the All Blacks lock supply is running low. Both Eaton and Ryan out with severe knee problems. Keith Robinson hurt his calf in the warm-up of this game. And now Ali and his jaw."

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 02, 2007 7:12 pm

  • as for the super 14's and McCaw yea he may do there but thats, Vary rarely see him make any big tackles at international level.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 02, 2007 7:15 pm

  • the all blacks are a brilliant team but they do go beyond the boundries of the rugby laws but fairplay to them they are still the best players in the world, but the thing i must agree with is the fact that they get away with alot if a team from the nothern H did as much they would have had alot of time off the season!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 11, 2007 6:27 pm

  • um for the bloke who said "i've seen McCaw smash people all over the place in super 14 rugby!" mcCaw doesnt do the smashing, he gets smashed, lote tuquiri nailed him, and in one of the try savers and rib breakers videos in this site, it shows him trying to tackle a player from the super 14 season, he he gets smashed again, every time he takes a run he gets rolled aswell. not trying to make arguments i just disagree that he is the "best player in the world"

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 17, 2007 10:38 am

  • McCaw certainly does do smashing tackles - and does them better than most.

But anyone who says that because he gets tackled means he's a not a great player is totally missing the point. The point about being a flanker is to smash into the opposition, again and again, ball in hand making the hard yards, finding the weaknesses. The trick is to keep doing it over & over for 80 minutes...

By Blogger fishboy, at July 24, 2007 5:14 am

  • That tackle was illegal and I think Nonu did get cited - incredible when you consider the O'Driscoll spear tackle by Mealamu and Umanga was much much worse - they should have been red carded and banned for months

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 15, 2007 8:14 pm

  • Too bad they wern't...muwahahahaha!! New Zealand all the way...hahahaha!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 18, 2007 7:30 am

  • well it was a shit move well read tbh.
true it was a spear but d'arcy attempts to knock nonu over? lmao
deserved in my oppinion....... nonu should of picked him up nd slammed him legaly though

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 13, 2008 6:48 pm

  • idiot why did he do that after the tana brian incident surely new zealand are becoming even dirtier than the italian?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at April 21, 2008 3:56 pm

  • Which Italian? Not the smartest of moves by Nonu. The ABs have always been a physical team like the South Africans etc

By Blogger olwaka, at August 25, 2008 3:49 pm

  • All Blacks are a joke, let me know when they win a World Cup. The ELVs are coming in because they can't play XV man rugby and the refs give them so much lee-way.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 30, 2008 12:31 am

  • All Blacks fans can at times be very cocky about there team.
Do you reckon that their world class players get where they are today by disrespecting other international teams.
They have more sense. Thats why they are consistently the best players in the world and their fans are not.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 01, 2008 11:35 pm

  • Darcy deserves that tackle as he's just a cocky irishman. The all blacks aren't dirty at all. As a new zealander i believe that we play hard physical rugby, not dirty rugby. It's just the camera angle in this video that makes it look that bad

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 02, 2008 6:10 pm

  • hes just a fuckin dog

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 03, 2008 2:36 pm
