Doug Howlett apologises

After Doug Howlett's alcohol fuelled rampage on Tuesday, he will now have to face a misconduct hearing before he can appear for his new Irish club Munster.

The incident occured outside the teams hotel in London and involved him damaging two cars.

Reports yesterday quoted an unnamed hotel staff member who said:
“There were about five to seven players drinking in the bar.

They looked as if they were pretty down in the dumps after they lost and they ran up a £12500 bar bill over several hours.

“It wasn’t just them, it was other members of the squad as well and it included food.

“They were behaving themselves while they were in the bar, but then for some reason, a couple of them decided to go outside and that was where it all kicked off.

“I heard they were bouncing up and down on several cars parked just outside the hotel and that was when we phoned the police.”

Howlett was arrested and released on bail.

He must report back to British police later this month and could be charged with causing criminal damage.

The All Black winger is staying in Europe with family for two weeks and took the unusual step of issuing a video apology overnight.

Good on him for being man enough to come forward and apologise.

  • punished by being kicked off the world cup, that's hard enough for a pro player like him I think

  • If they had picked him, the most reliable winger with a cool (playing) head, I reckon they would have stood a better chance of winning. He's probably raging inside for Henry being a tosser

  • Poor guy. Don't think he'll be able add to his record number of tries in world cups now. He's 30 now isn't he?

  • A very good sign from him, because he is a role model for the (future) rugby players. He knows and understands this, but I can imagine him being a bit frustrated about losing to France and failing to win the Webb Ellis trophy for five times straight.

  • He's perfect for Munster so.

  • Definately dont agree with kali....if you or i were to get hammered after perhaps a salary decrease at work, and then jump up and down on cars i dont believe the excuse "oh well he just got a salary decrease so thats punishment enough" at the end of the day he did criminal damage.
Good on him for owning up and due to that im sure the police will be a bit more leniant!

  • If he was jumping on a crappy French designed car, he’s lucky to be alive. Statistics show your more likely be kill in French car than any other!!!!!
He would have made a lot more money and friends if he had stomped on henrys face.
Now that’s a headline worth printing.
How many of you out there haven’t done a little vandalism in your time.
He’ll be punished by the court enough.
To judge him as a fan would be hypocritical

  • 7 guys drink £12,500 worth of piss. Surely that desrves some sort of world cup alone. Im surprised he even had legs that were functioning to jump on the cars.

  • See kids what happens when Krusty tries to self-medicate?

  • Interesting that he doesn't admit to what he did. He simply apologies for "the situation" and "the embarrassment"

    Then again, it's been edited.

But he does seem contrite, and willing to own up and take personal responsibility for the outcome of his actions. I guess that disqualifies him for being the next AB coach.

  • haha! If you can't get drunk and misbehave after losing the world cup, without even getting to play? then when can you??? If a few of us had to apologise for drunken behaviour after games...we'd spend 1/2 our lives apologising!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 15, 2007 3:07 am

  • well he should have been selected in the squad then maybe he would've scored a few an they would be in the final an then his drunken actions wouldnt of accured. but i gota tell ya, it doesnt suprise me. he was in england after all an we here in england will kick the shit out of any1 an anythin if we loose(or win)
he got caught up in our alchohol fumes.lol

Once again, the media got this one wrong. It was about 12 or 15 guys, and the 12,500 included accommodation , dinner and drinks.

Anything for a good story though, huh?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 18, 2007 6:48 am

  • Did the 12,500 include (in the words of a Kazakh telejournalist) "hand relief"
