Clint Newlands punches Neemia Tialata

Hawkes Bay vs Wellington in the Air New Zealand cup a few weeks ago. Watch near the front of the lineout for the blatant punch on All Black prop Neemia Tialata, who goes down like a ton of bricks.

What sparked the incident? No idea, but front rower Clint Newlands will be serving a 10 week ban for his knockout punch, despite appealing the severity of it.

Surely red-cardable had the ref or touch judge spotted it. And how they didn't spot it, only they will know. Lights out Tialata.

  • I agree with you. I don't understand how they didn't see that...
It's kinda like they don't wanna see it...so strange.
I remember 2 years ago, maybe one, in Top 14, Clermont-Auvergne against Stade Français, Swarzewski punched Ledesma right in the face, it was a big blow just after a scrum. The referee was so close of the action and did not red-card the french hooker...
I hope the refereeing will be fair in RWC.

  • That's so pathetic. I don't see how he deserved it in any way.

  • Although it may have been a bad incident a shot like that is never unprovoked.
That was the third lineout of the game. In the first one Neemia was Illegally pushing Clint (who was a lifter). He told him not to do it but Neemia just laughed.
He told the ref but ref did nothin.
2nd lineout he did it again.
Third lineout.............well you watch Neemia at the back step across the line and push the Lifter.
This is illegal because as you can see if a lifter is pushed over the chances that the jumper can twist and fall dangerously is hightened.
    Neemia got what he deserved.
Being an AB doesnt mean you can play dirty in the NPC.

Dont let people put your team mates at risk of getting hurt.
If they keep doing it and the ref doesnt do something.........well........See above.

On the whole....the refs fault for not pickin up on Neemias illegal play. You cant expect front rowers to maintain decorum.

  • got what he deserved. pushing the lifter is extremely dangerous.

  • yeah your right there, well spotted

  • I agree. Kept happening to me a few weeks ago; it doesn't take much of a shot to screw with you if it's unexpected and from behind. Nowt wrong with a little revenge, but you can't expect the ref to agree... The puncher should have been more discreet (that's what rucks mauls and scrums are for)

  • yeah whatever neanderthals. What's the point in the officials if you are going to take matters into your own hands. Neemia's illegal play? not proven Newlands cowardly punch? Fact. If you condone that then you obviously haven't evolved far enough to really apprecaite what the game is or should be.
    Cowards supporting a coward.
