The Ross Rennie tackle on Brian O'Driscoll
In the Six Nations last weekend we saw Scotland take on Ireland at Croke Park, in a game that produced some splendid tries and examples of incredible skill.
The game also produced this flip tackle by Ross Rennie on Irish captain Brian O'Driscoll. The footage has been highly requested so here it is.
O'Driscoll was literally flipped over substitute Rennie's shoulder, Judo style.
The referee saw nothing wrong with it, which technically is probably incorrect considering O'Driscoll's feet were above his hips and Rennie didn't lower him to the ground, as the law stipulates you should do.
It wasn't however a proper spear tackle as such, so therefore Rennie got away with it. A lot of refs may have seen it differently though, with a penalty, and perhaps even a yellow card being shown.

Nothing wrong with that.

Anonymous above (use a name in future mate), there's nothing wrong with it if you're Scottish. :)
I'd say if you're Irish you'd probably not be too happy about it.
O'Driscoll was fine, but if he'd landed on his head it wouldn't have been too pretty. I guess he didn't though so that's why the red thought it was cool.

I didn't think there was much wrong with it.
(Oh, and its O Driscoll, not O Gara :D)

I played with Ross at school and there is nothing malicious about him or the tackle.
wise up sharky!

Spear tackles (clear intention lift and then upturn) are an insidious part of the game....but this wasn't one. Check out:

Anyone got this clip? Useful to take the debate further on spear tackles.

Not sure what Sharky needs to wise up about? If he'd have landed on his head that'd have been something nasty, Ross was lucky. No one ever called him malicious, but that was careless and stupid.
Quick one... In the second ruck on the clip the Scots drive the Irish off the ball, leaving it exposed under Callaghan. Now when a Scottish player tries to play it he's told it's a ruck. I'd have thought it was a ruck won by the Scots so they could do what they wanted with it, and that Donna was obstructing it off his feet. I just can't work out the refereeing of rucks at the moment!

Yeah I didn't think it was too bad, I'm just saying some refs may have.

O'Driscoll needs to learn how to keep his feet. That's the second time he's almost done himself a mischief.
By Anonymous, at March 04, 2008 3:30 pm
Yeah lads...keep his feet. what are ye talking about ?!!!
It was stupid but not malicious and BOD was grand so i suppose alls well that ends well. Any chance of trimble, heaslip and BOD's tackles from this game ?
By Anonymous, at March 04, 2008 3:43 pm
Hackneygriff, think you're right about that. I'd say the scots won that and sould've been allowed to get the ball. It's such a grey area though and you just have to learn quickly in the first ten minutes how a ref judges them.

The Scottish player released his bind on the tackle stood up and tossed the Irish player over his shoulder, That is an original type spear tackle and is just as dangerous if not more so than the 'league' style tackles which are becoming common today.

im irish and i dont see anything malicious or wrong with the tackle. obviously a crack down on spear tackling is needed. but not good hard defence. i dint see any i suppose you'd call it 'downward pressure' in the tackle..
By Anonymous, at March 04, 2008 4:33 pm
Funnily enough Stickey Mickey, downward pressure as you call it, or driving the player to the ground is actually what IS allowed. Meaning that, dropping a player once you've lifted him up is the worst offence. Bringing him back down to ground is what referees and officials want.
Obviously driving his head to the ground isn't wanted either, but they often go on about 'bring the player back down safely' these days.

Lol the tackle is widely used on Rugby 08 by Fifa, if you line them up properly and is completely legal :P
I thought, if you use wrestling terms it was an overhead into a samoan drop :P

whar does he say t the end about borges, the argentinian winger??
By Anonymous, at March 04, 2008 9:27 pm
In my view BOD was able to react and roll himself as a result of Rennie not holding him and driving him down as happened in 2005 against the ABs. If Rennie had held him and driven him down i would have understood the "shades of" comment. Memorable to say the least. Probably not the most legal tackle but most Irish fans i know didn't complain as Rennie didn't drive/throw BOD into the turf.

fred, it's not completely legal just because it's in a game, that is possibly one of the most stupid things I have ever heard.
And it's not really a Samoan drop, when doing that you hold the opponent on your shoulders and drop backwards, slamming them down with your back and shoulders for extra force. It's more a shoulder flip/toss

He didnt actually lift him, his momentum carried him over Ross' shoulder. Agreed it couldnt have been interesting if he landed on his head.
By Anonymous, at March 06, 2008 9:43 am
Well, he was kinda lifted......
By Anonymous, at March 06, 2008 9:44 am

has anyone been watching the super14 the last couple of weeks and noticed the inconsistency of the refs in regards to these sorts of tackles. brumbies v reds...digby ioane didnt get penalised but afterwards got 3wks for one tackle which wasnt that bad, in the same game a similar tackle from the brumbies winger got yellowcarded but absolutely no suspension... thats just the start
By Anonymous, at March 10, 2008 11:30 am
The hit was legel...the guy jumped into the hit. It's a tough call though because the ref can't see everything at once. The hit was unintentional though soooooo he shouldnt be penelized too badly

By Anonymous, at November 10, 2008 3:14 pm
BOD tackes a lot of hits understandably because he is a threat. tackle is fine i rekon-happens all the time if anything BOD did well because he got a few metres past the tackler-all he did was run over him really.-im neutral btw
