Sebastien Chabal hit hard & high - red card

Seabass started at lock on sunday night in the mismatched game between hosts France and Namibia, once again showing his versatility and giving more options to French coach Bernard Laporte.

Chabal is not someone who goes unnoticed on the rugby field though, as he poses a threat whenever he has ball in hand, purely because of his strength, aggresion and as you'll see later, speed.

So when he got the ball in a little space, Namibian eighth man Jacques Nieuwenhuis wasn't taking any chances. He swooped on Chabal and hit him hard and high, resulting in the Frenchman being left in a daze on the floor. Referee Alain Roland promptly issued the straight red, and Namibia had to play the rest of the game with 14 men, which probably contributed to them going down 87-10.

Nieuwenhuis was warned a couple of times before that, but to give him a straight red clearly meant that Roland viewed his intent as deliberate and a direct attack on Chabal. And he was probably right.

  • Considering the spear tackle on Olly barkley in the ENG-USA game which was far more dangerous than this action I think it should have been a yellow card.

The red card killed the game, namibia could have done so much better. Great they scored their try at the end though, they deserved it.

  • Yeah,
deserved a yellow. Never a red.

  • he was warned many times before...
so the red card is ok

  • I think that the ref gave him a red as a security measure... I wouldn't dare hit Chabal illegaly LOL.
To be more serious, i also think that the red was a bit too much, even if he was warned, but i don't think that it would have changed the game a lot (maybe france would have scored only 40 points, but in the end...)

  • I agree it wouldn't really affect the outcome but it would definately make the game a bit more interesting to watch. All I saw was france walking over a 14 man team which never gave up and kept on fighting for the ball. Maybe with 15 v 15 namibia could have shown some nice moves.

  • they try to hurt him, but he gets angry and scores

  • The ref blew Nambia out of the game in the 1st 20 minutes and after he gave the red card he relaxed on his whistle. Chabal behaved like a footballer with this tackle...no respect for him at all. Yes the French certainly picked up their game since loosing to Argentina, but Nambia had the heart and soul.

  • "Just a fan", how can you say Chabal behaved like a footballer with this tackle?
He was running at full pelt and got a swinging arm to the throat. It's going to hurt.

  • "Chabal behaved like a footballer with this tackle..."

A Footballer would have done at least a triple backflip with a hit like that ! I don't know if you ever reveived a hit in the throat, but I guarantee that you would have reacted the same way

  • LoL I would like to see you get tackled round the neck by an international level number8.. And if you watched the match, that was probably the 3rd or 4th high tackle by the namibian number8...

  • Yellow card for this tackle and not red. But the tackler had been warned for dangerous tackles several times before and the ref couldn't pass threw.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 19, 2007 3:49 pm

  • I think red is the right desision. the main poin was the obvious intent. a brocken colar bone could easily been the outcome.
And "just a fan" is an idiot. A footballer would have pretended to be dead.

  • I'm not sure what to say, maybe he milked it, maybe he didn't.

But i've seen thousands of tackles like that in league with little to 0 effect on the player

Don't get me wrong, anyone else reacting how Chabal did might get a different reaction. But he's Chabal, i expected him to be invinsible in comparison to the rest of these mortals

    :(

  • If the ref had warned him before, why hadn't he been given the sin bin? One high tackle, that's a warning. Two, 10 minutes to cool your head. Third strike and you're out.

It's a bludgering hit, takes a man like Chabal to be back on his feet but the ref made his own bed and had to lie in it.

  • Didn't deserve a red. Anyway Alain Rolland is half French and therefore isn't supposed to referee a French match, he was way too biased.
He went to my school, he's a complete tool. A yellow would have been okay but a red after telling Nuweinhuis once before to watch the high tackle, just stupidity.
It was nice to see someone like Chabal floored for ages though

  • cest a chier!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 11, 2007 5:39 am

  • Any tackle that could kill someone should be a red!!!
    no question!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 11, 2007 9:19 pm

  • Yeah, but that tackle couldn't kill a 10-year-old, let alone Chabal...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 13, 2007 11:13 pm

  • I missed this game, and they didn't show the tackle in the highlights.
If that was a worthy red card, Fiji would have been playing with 12 men against RSA in the Quarters.

  • Would have said, horrible, but since the caveman came with his comment "we're in Franch, so I 'll only speak French" have no sympathy for the arrogant bastard.
Anyway, I think he overplayed it to get the Namibian redcarded. He should go play football for Chelsea with shit like that. Just not rugby

  • I love seeing chabal get smashed... serves you rite "HOBO"

  • i like seeing chabal get smashed... serves you rite 'HOBO'

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 21, 2007 10:52 pm

  • i dont understand all the 'hit chabal and he comes back harder....he doesn't, for sale or france, once hes hit hard, he vanishes from the game! for proof, watch fra vs eng, fra vs arg (3rd place match), or at club level watch the gloucester vs sale games.... hes overrated simply because hes noticable and talismanic.....cut his hair, he'd not get in the french side!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 29, 2007 6:45 pm

  • come on guys, what are you talking about??? how can you imagine that a man like Chabal "overplayed" it? These are the rules, the tackle was far too high.did any of the players contest the referee's decision?
And please Dan,Mauman, stop talking nonsense,if you knew Chabal you wouldn't post such stupid comments!what would have been his interest in getting Nuweinhuis redcarded??And concerning this famous interview, you obviously ignore he has a great sense of humor and always makes fun of(and with) journalists, including the french ones, you should check some videos on the web.So here's my conclusion:you're just two jealous and frustrated little boys. And Rich, your comment is really poor...

  • Chabal is a wimp-he throws the ball away when he's scared- e.g Jerry Collins' tackle.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 11, 2007 5:46 am

  • lol i think tis pretty hilarious its always fun watching the french get smashed. It should have only been a yellow.
I think the red is a good idea though cos chabal would have been out for blood afterwards.

  • Errr.. just watched the B&I Lions spend the better part of three tests doing exactly those kinds of tackles to the Springboks. Not one penalty, never mind a card.
