Andries Bekker tells the little ones to settle down

From earlier this year in the Super 14 game between the Stormers and the Hurricanes, giant 6ft8 lock Andries Bekker tells the overzealous Hurricanes outside backs David Smith and Corey Jane to calm down in his own delicate way.

This reminds me of those old wrestling matches where Andre the Giant would go up against two or more guys, and normally win.

Bekker is the son of former Springbok Hennie Bekker who was apparently also freakish in size.

An up and coming player, don't be surprised to see more of the significant Andries Bekker presence in the future.

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 22, 2007 2:44 pm

    Bekker : 2.08
    Domolailai: 2.05
    Esterhuize: 2.05
    Jack:2.02 ....

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 22, 2007 3:09 pm

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 22, 2007 6:36 pm

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 22, 2007 7:31 pm

  • who cares whos the tallest, hes bigger than them, thats all that matters
    and it is good to see no punches thrown

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 23, 2007 2:29 am

  • Reminds me of Martin Johnson in the 2001 Lions Tour. That was funny too

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 23, 2007 10:36 am

  • Shaws 6"10 so LOL

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 24, 2007 11:22 am

  • No, Shaw is not 6'10", he's 6'9, same as Charteris, only Charteris weighs more.

    Bekker is taller than both Shaw and Charteris.

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 25, 2007 4:22 pm

  • On Shaw's England profile its says 2.03 meters while Bekker is 2.07 it is a big difference!

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 26, 2007 12:43 pm

  • bekker will be a bok very soon

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 27, 2007 12:03 pm

  • devin toner for leinster is something like 6'10

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 27, 2007 6:00 pm

  • just one word on tall locks ... richard metcalfe ... ok, that was two words

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 30, 2007 12:29 am

  • ummmmm yao ming is 7'6"...doesnt have to do with rugby but yeah...

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 07, 2007 11:53 pm

  • lol martin johnson did the same thing except he did it with two props intead of two backs. fairly funny.

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 21, 2007 3:53 pm

  • it doesnt matter how tall you are, its how you play what counts,sure ,size is an advanage but if your 6'10 and shit you won't be be picked over a man who's 6'3 and great at playing the game.

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 06, 2008 9:40 pm

  • p.s. lol

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 06, 2008 9:41 pm

  • people might be talking about simon shaw, chris jack and this bekkies guy....

    but check out matt banahan, ex-jersey boy now playing on the WING for bath. 6ft 7 and ridiculously quick

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 12, 2008 4:09 pm

  • Anyone got the video of Martin Johnson in the 2001 Lions Tour doing something similar?

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 22, 2008 2:52 pm

  • Most lock forwards heights are exagerated however Bekker is a legitimate 6'10" his father Hennie, a "Bok" in the 1980s team was 6'8".

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 25, 2008 10:47 pm

  • The original article was wrong. Bekker is 6'10" not 6'8".

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 07, 2008 11:27 am

  • hahaha. well done Andries your beautie

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 10, 2008 2:38 pm

  • I know for sure that Simon Shaw is 6 7 and I read in the build up to South Africa vs Wales that Andries Bekker is 6 9, so i'm pretty sure you're all exagerationg so your favorite second row seems bad ass

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 14, 2008 6:15 am

  • tallest player was a scottish player who played about 3 to 4 years ago. 7ft, radcliffe or sumthing like that
    2.07 is about 6'10
    2m is 6'7
    most locks are 6'6 or 1.98cm
    chris jack is 6'7
    mal o'kelly is 6'8
    ali williams is 6'7
    shaw is 6'8
    botha and matfield both 6'7
    few locks are under 6'6 these days
    devin toner for leinster is 6'10

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 16, 2008 6:35 pm

  • metcalfe yes, just read that

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 16, 2008 6:37 pm

  • Going by his latest measurement Bekker is 2.08 metres ( 6'10).

    Devin Toner for leinster is 6'10 also

    I remeber watching a Heineken Cup game a few years ago between Leinster and Agen in Landsdowne Road.One of the Agen second-rows stood well above 6'8 Leinster lock Malcolm O'Kelly.Unfortunately 6'10 Leinster lock Devin Toner wasn't playing so a better comparison wasn't available.i can't remember the guy's name, he wasn't that great a player.A fella in the crowd told he was 2.10 metres(6'11)He was really massive!

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 21, 2008 7:14 pm

  • Yeah, Metcalfe = 7ft

    Bob Casey for London irish and ireland is 6'9 also.

    Charteris=6'9
    Casey= 6'9
    Toner= 6'10
    Metcalfe (now retired) = 7'0
    Shaw= 6'9
    O'Kelly= 6'8
    Jack= 6'8
    Esterhuiyse= 6'9
    Domolailai= 6'9
    Harrison= 6'8
    Mcleod = 6'8
    Botha = 6'7 1/2

    6'7 = 2.01 metres

    6'8 = 2.03 metres

    6'9 = 2.06 metres

    6'10 = 2.08 metres

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 21, 2008 7:22 pm

  • shaw might be big and strong but bakkies 'the enforcer' botha hammered him in the world cup final..bekker 6ft10..i went to same school as him..the man is massive

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 24, 2008 10:52 pm

  • A second-row for Germany is 7'1 or 2.15 metres. And that's incorrect, 6'8 is 2.03 metres. Bekker is actually 6'10 (2.08 metres)

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 14, 2008 12:13 pm

  • I love the way he just bangs there heads together and tells them to calm down.

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at August 14, 2008 3:43 pm

  • I think this is one of the most important caracteristics of the Second Rows (or Locks if you want to): in a moment they can change from a calm big guy to a fucking scrum-half killer, I mean, they can set you down if you are needed to ;). I'm a SR (although I'm not very tall) and I grab people by their jerseys too.
    Thanks for "translating" from feet to meters but I still don't understand a shit about it.

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 01, 2008 9:04 pm

  • Andries Bekker is 6ft 10, not 6ft 8............

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 01, 2009 8:32 pm

  • simon shaw is actually only 5ft 9

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 25, 2009 11:56 pm

  • " to a fucking scrum-half killer"

    not hard really

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 26, 2009 4:43 pm

  • bekker 6'10 its says on wikipedia but 2.08m is 6'8

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 26, 2009 5:09 pm

  • bekker is not as good as shaw, did you not watch the lions tour...?
    shaw was the best second row on the field he was all over matfield and botha, and bekker is not as good as either of those 2

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 28, 2009 1:26 pm

  • I love the little men who are built as hell who run around, causing havoc, getting into trouble but having thier big minders at 8 or 5 sorting out thier scuffs.

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 31, 2009 2:12 pm

  • jim hamilton, scotland 2nd row, is or is over 7ft, not 100% sure on that one though.

    By Anonymous fresh91, at November 09, 2009 8:26 pm

  • this is the dummest conversation ever, you all are fucked up

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 09, 2009 8:42 pm

  • And they all shoot lightningbolts out of their arses...

    focus guys

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 10, 2009 11:44 am

  • the only real important question which no-one has mentioned yet is who do you want on your team? Name me your first choice 4 and 5 and give me an 18 while your at it. I'll start at 4 I want Shaw or Hines. At 5 I want Ali Williams. At 18 coming off the bench for impact I'll take Horwill.
