Midweek Madness - The Northampton Saints 30m scrum!

Northampton Saints put in a punishing performance as they flexed their muscles to beat Newcastle 34-13 in the Aviva Premiership at Franklin’s Gardens on the weekend. This clip highlights the power they showed to dominate the visitors.

Saints picked up a bonus point as they scored four tries in a game that illustrated the power of their pack. "The tight five were phenomenal again," said Phil Dowson.

"It's almost impossible to defend against scrummaging like that and it gave us a great platform. We said last week we'd set ourselves some high standards and we had to back them up against a tough challenge from the north east.

"To get two bonus-point wins in a row is really pleasing. We need to keep pushing on, keep learning and make sure we do it week in and week out," added Dowson.

Dowson’s pack of forwards completely dominated Newcastle, as can be seen here with this incredible 30m scrum that started on halfway and ended with an easy penalty kick for Stephen Myler. Directly from the restart, they where then at it again as they mauled up field with ease.

"We were overpowered in the scrum and from that base it's impossible to build up any momentum. Either Northampton were really, really good in that area or we were really poor," said Newcastle boss Alan Tait, who went on to say ‘Northampton gave us a good lesson today’.

To add insult to injury, Newcastle are being investigated by the RFU after they allegedly abused the use of front row replacements during the first half. Comments were made by their forward coach at the break that a player was taken off to give him a break from the pummeling up front.

  • Amazing how Dickson manages to knock the ball on after both of those surges up field. Quite incredible c*cking up that is.

  • now thats a complete humilliation (spelling?) for newcastle... their props wont forget that for a long, very long time...

  • It's not really a surprise Falcons are driven back that far, there were terrible body positions and only two people defending a maul that had at least 5 Saints players in.
    Schoolboy rugby!

  • one awesome complete forward dominance.

  • Hopefully there are still some good scrummaging skills that will keep the NH teams in the running a little more during the autumn tests!

That was some drive by the big fellas...Newcastle are having a dreadful year. Not sure they will be able to stay up this season which will be a shame for Rugby Union in Northern England.

  • Only ever seen anything like that from the Tigers. Absolute demolition!

By Anonymous Maverick, at November 03, 2010 2:29 pm

  • the knock on was ryan powell not dicko

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 03, 2010 2:45 pm

  • Completly ok with Niwita

The salute of NH teams will be synonym of a good scrummaging, and ireland, wales, france or england have this in their blood.

A bemol, who put prozac in newcastle props water bottles? :)

By Anonymous Flooz, at November 03, 2010 3:53 pm

  • i dont think the power of national scrums is an issue, as england beat aussies simply with 2 penalty tries, france set up their 6N campaign on a solid scrum and have always been a scrummaging powerhouse (they beat boks nov 09 with great scrums), the irish have always been regular, and the italians are very very good upfront (castrogiovanni, perugini, festuccia, lo cicero ... and many other italian tight forwards play in top european teams, specially france, as castro is considering a move across the channel)

so yeah i dont think NH teams have that much to fear from autumn tests, at least upfront

  • also dickson could barely walk after taking a huge knock in the previous play.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 03, 2010 4:02 pm

  • I don't understand how NH can be told they had to "use it" if the maul stopped again. It only stopped briefly and it was pretty clear they had plenty more. I might be unaware about a law or something so please tell me if I am.

Also, the player who made the tackle (number 2) after the maul came around the side. Seems like a pretty clear penalty to me.

Also, Flooz, not as sure about the French, English or Welsh scrums, but the Irish one isn't going too well and I'm not sure how it'll hold up to SA or NZ.

  • Pull it down at least right?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 03, 2010 5:27 pm

  • What is wrong with the Falcons????? Still great work from the Saints!

I agree with some of the recent comments about the chance of NH teams to win vs SH will come from the scrummaging. Unfortunately, the lack of common refereeing on this part and the continuous change will not be of help and guess where the WC will be.

Still this should not be a excuse for NH teams which on international level, have hardly proposed any enthusiastic /attacking approach in their games.

Still I hope they can pick up the pace and their games, starting with the upcoming international tests

  • agree with above,if Ireland's scrum is the same as previous six nations,or last years autumn tests,it's going to get destroyed.hopefully gert smal will have done a lot of work on it

  • That's embarrassing for a falcons fan to watch. We miss hayman so dearly and hudsons absence doesn't help.going To be a tuff season and I'm starting to fear for the worst. Putty that as we used to dominate teams in the forwards how times have changed since hayman left bad bad times

By Anonymous Geordie, at November 03, 2010 5:43 pm

  • Its funny how big a difference one man can make, pretty sure that wouldnt have happened so badly last year with carl heyman playing for the falcons

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 03, 2010 7:35 pm

  • wow, never seen anything like that before. Also is tonga'huia (cant spell it) about the best prop in the world. If he can do what he does in the loose and then do that in the tight

By Anonymous David, at November 03, 2010 9:17 pm

  • Ouch. The only thing I can think of there would have been for the toon tighthead to accept he's been dicked and whip the scrum right around - the ref might blow it, but more likely he'll reset the scrum or the northampton 8 would pick and go.

  • 'Amazing how Dickson manages to knock the ball on after both of those surges up field. Quite incredible c*cking up that is.'

2nd time round it was Ryan Powell who knocked on.

PS Dickson should be in the England set up.

  • What a scrum ! This is why Union is better than League.

    Scrum makes the difference.

  • your name is grant constable then

By Anonymous rosh, at November 04, 2010 8:18 pm

  • Somebody in Newcastle get a copy of the '97 Lions Tour DVD and Jim Telfer's phone number... ;)

That must've been the most humiliating sight I've seen on a rugby pitch, ever!

Looking at the way Newcastle have been playing, they deserve to be relegated this season. Would be a great loss to northern rugby, though...

By Anonymous Sander, at November 04, 2010 8:37 pm

  • most of the newcastle forwards were just stood there doing nothing. the scrum was impressive, brilliant to see, but the maul that was just lack of commitment/effort/desire from newcastle. replay it and watch the guy in the pink scrum hat and tell me he is seriously committed to stopping that drive. just abysmal. worse than school boy from him

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 04, 2010 10:05 pm

  • domination. back to the squat racks, newcastle!

    By Anonymous usa7, at November 04, 2010 10:47 pm

  • Good work by the pack going forward but the other guys seemed to be just leaning or standing around watching, maybe they were taking notes.

By Anonymous secondfive, at November 05, 2010 1:35 am

  • While Newcastle should be very embarasses 3 things....

    1) The Falcons 2nd row was abysmal; arses up in that air and didn't stay square at all. No help against a concenbtrated shove.

    2) In the maul the guy holding the ball at the back came unbound about 10 times (remember bound is the whole arm to shoulder) and should have been told to run

    3) @anonymous above: the rule is you get two chances to use the ball from the maul if it gets stopped twice you must use it

PS put your bloddy name on the post

    By Anonymous ned2or3, at November 05, 2010 5:05 am

  • One little addendum to this - Dickson limped up the field and then fell over because he had broken his leg in the preceding play. As I write this now (late December), he is just back from that injury and starting to feature again for the Saints.

  • See, if Aaron Myers was playing for Falcons that wouldn't of happened! Falcons, shape up and sign some good players!
