The Bledisloe Cup classic in Hong Kong - full highlights

Earlier in the week we featured the final moments from the dramatic finish to the Bledisloe Cup test in Hong Kong between Australia and New Zealand. If you missed the game or would fancy taking another look at the best bits, here are extended highlights of what was another classic Bledisloe Cup encounter.

After the incredible match, there were a few names that were on the lips of every journo and armchair pundit out there. James O’Connor was obviously the man being celebrated the most, but then there was the Quade Cooper-Richie McCaw incident, and of course All Blacks replacement flyhalf Stephen Donald, who took most of the blame for the loss.

Donald had a bit of a shocker after coming on for Dan Carter, but the AB’s coaching staff have backed their man. Backs coach Wayne Smith said on Monday "With Stephen, we all love him. Everyone's got great belief in Stephen. He's got real character."

Sentiment aside, the move to bring Carter off to rest him ahead of the next few weeks proved costly and New Zealand tossed away their 15 match unbeaten streak. Lithuania remain the record holders, but that’s another piece of random rugby trivia altogether.

"He's done this before, I suspect he'll do it again. It's not easy, you go to a dark place. I’ve been there myself. That's the accountability of the All Black jersey, he's the only one that can do it. He'll get another opportunity," added Smith.

As for the Wallabies, they play Wales this weekend in Cardiff and feel it will be a tough game, despite the home side’s injury toll. "I hear this every year, the number of injuries Wales have but every side has injuries. It’s just the nature of the game these days. It’s about 22 fit blokes against 22 fit blokes and who can do better on the day," said coach Robbie Deans.

These highlights from the weekend’s game feature all the tries, as well as the final moments. There were a few scorchers, namely to Adam Ashley-Cooper – who was nearly decapitated by his teammate - and Drew Mitchell. The highlighst also feature the closing moments and the kick, all with Australian commentary which some might prefer. Enjoy.

sorry couldnt help it, its the first time it happens to me

nice tries, good game, thrilling climax !!!

  • also forgot to mention will genia's amazing celebration high tackle on adam ashley-cooper ! xD

i hope the all black backs (carter, nonu, muliaina, jane...) wearing adidas predator X switch back to the silver boots, because the black and fluorescent yellow is kinda ugly and definatly not as classy

By Anonymous Luxi, at November 02, 2010 9:50 am

  • thanks for the fashion tips Luxi.....

The Aussie's really ground out a good win. Poor cover defense though, unlike the AB's to let in a couple of tries like they did in that game.

Just goes to show, on the day, even the most dominant teams can lose.

  • Never mind the fashion tips, thanks for the video!

Adam Ashley Cooper is pure class. What a player. I also loved how Nonu took that try. Clinical.

By Anonymous Taniwha, at November 02, 2010 10:09 am

  • So I watched this game, and I must admit I was expecting better from the two best team in the world at the moment. Especially from the AB that were so strong during the tri nation.

But, none discussed this forward pass at 3:52, which is really really forward.

    By Blogger D0m3, at November 02, 2010 10:09 am

  • So much for selling the game of rugby to the world, we can't even fill a small stadium in a country that's already relatively interested in the sport.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 02, 2010 10:15 am

  • To the herb who thought that the Mitchell try was 'really really' forward. You need to watch this sideline clip, son.

A more poignent question would have been, why wasn't Donald cited for the headhigh?

Wallabies to go through Europe untouched

  • ^^
nice one buzzkill. HK has one large 7s tournament a year, hardly cause to expect a sell out for a game not featuring the home nation. Selling the game requires games like this one, I will put money on the next HK test being a sell out.

By Anonymous ChinUp, at November 02, 2010 10:45 am

  • ChinUp, the attendance is half of that from the first game in Hong Kong in 2008.

It's going backwards and the tickets were cheap too.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 02, 2010 10:49 am

  • Sad people fussing and whinging about crowd sizes which are affected by all sorts of things and go up and down over time for different reasons. Next time might sell out and the game might be rubbish so half of that crowd decide not to bother the time after that. That's life. Rugby lives on.

By Anonymous Amboman, at November 02, 2010 11:32 am

  • That's the thing though, rugby's going down, not on. Why buy a ticket when every game is live on TV? I bet more than 75% of the visitors to this site rarely goto a game, most just watch on TV and YouTube.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 02, 2010 11:46 am

  • Speak for yourself Anonymous, I'm a season ticket holder for the QLD Reds and get priority allocation of all Wallabies games played in Australia.

Watching games live on TV is great but nothing beats the atmosphere of being in the stands.

  • 75%? I bet it's morelike 95%, lazy generation of armchair fans.

  • Ashley Cooper's try reminded me of BOD's for the Lions in 2001. The Kiwis should have finished the game wtih 2 in the bin - the Aussies could probably have strolled in if they gave the ref the chance to give out cards for the persistent infringements at the ruck and the high-tackle in the last 2 minutes.

I didn't see that game but the highlights look great.

By Anonymous Mike, at November 02, 2010 12:41 pm

  • @ Danny

You're right re. the forward pass. It only looks forward if you don't know the rules, the ball is allowed to travel forward as long as it is backward relative to the passer and receiver.

By Anonymous Gavin, at November 02, 2010 12:45 pm

  • @Danny

Thx for the clip. But still, the ball is sent, at most, at the start of the white line, and received, at least, at the end of it.

    @Gavin
Well, Im not an expert, but in the IRB laws:
"A throw forward occurs when a player throws or passes the ball forward.
‘Forward’ means towards the opposing team’s dead ball line."

    By Blogger D0m3, at November 02, 2010 1:09 pm

  • Gavin is right: referees are told to take momentum into account nowadays.

The best way to explain is: imagine you are in a moving car, going around 50 mph, and you throw something sideways, or even backwards, out of the window. Would you really expect it to land backwards from the position you released it? Just because you let something go doesn't mean it immediately loses all the forward momentum. The same applies to a rugby ball; if someone running forwards throws a ball horizontally then the ball will still travel forward due to momentum

By Anonymous Dude, at November 02, 2010 1:36 pm

  • @RedYeti
Of course, that's my point. The ball is going forward.
So, how do you know they are told to take momentum into account? Do you have a link or something?

    By Blogger D0m3, at November 02, 2010 1:54 pm

  • NH is going to get SMASHED!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 02, 2010 2:17 pm

  • Dom3 - that's the point - he doesn't throw it forward, he throws it sideways. But he's running forwards at 25kph, so the ball travels forwards as well as sideways. But he did not throw it towards the opponents' goal line. He threw it sideways. It is the direction that you throw the ball that the rule covers, not the direction that it travels, and the pass was good.

By Anonymous Gavin, at November 02, 2010 2:20 pm

  • @Gavin
Ok, that makes sense. Thank you for your explanations.

It seems hard to know whether the player throws it forward or not, though.

    By Blogger D0m3, at November 02, 2010 3:07 pm

  • Great match with a constant intensity, exactly what u can wait from SH teams.
The most incredible is that both teams seem to have good legs at the end of SH season.

I think England, Ireland and France will have to rise their level if they want to beat these teams. Or they'll be physically trashed.

Quade Cooper seem to have brought some creativity to aussies, no bad

  • Agree with lots of comments above : AB start to rip opponents heads off and make ugly tackles way too often when things go wrong.

The last minutes of the game are painfull to watch. This must have been very frustrating for the Aussies, but they showed nerves of steel, except Quade maybe : )

I hope the refs are aware of that behavior and will start to penalize them as they do with the Safas (who pay a high price for their reputation)

PS : Anyone thinking AB intentionnaly run into the ref to find a way (watch Cowan's try at 2:27)

By Anonymous Ulf, at November 02, 2010 4:29 pm

  • @Anonymous reply to Chinup

Tickets were NOT cheap.. they cost between £90-120 each which is the main reason it didnt sell out. Nuetrals tended to avoid it!

I went along, and I am glad I did. There is alot of talk about moving this fixture to London or similar next time. But whereever it is played, I hope we see a game as good as this one!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 02, 2010 4:32 pm

  • Ulf, I looked at the Cowan try - looked fine to me. There was space there, and he used the ref intelligently. No rules broken, no problem - or?

By Anonymous Mike, at November 02, 2010 5:13 pm

  • Ulf,

Don't be a muppet. There was nothing wrong with Cowan's try. Now, Conrad Smith did use the ref a little sneakily to prevent an Australian line-break at one point, but that's a separate issue.

By Blogger Bobby Nations, at November 02, 2010 5:27 pm

  • A useful loss for the All Blacks - hopefully it means the team realise they can be beaten and therefore they can be prepared for the spirited restance Oz put their way come 2011.....I know many say the All Blacks have the best backs but I think the Oz backline is outstanding.

As an England supporter it is a case of damage limitation in the Autumn tests no matter which side we come up against. Hopefully things will have changed a little by the 2011 wordlcup though!

By Anonymous NiWiTa, at November 02, 2010 5:38 pm

  • I don't care how good quade cooper is. He pushed Mccaw just after the final try was scored, I'm just glad that Mccaw didn't react (mostly due to rocky being there). I hope he gets a bollocking for it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 02, 2010 5:41 pm

  • how is Graham Henry not taking any blame? thats the second time he has taken Carter off before the end of a game where they think they have won (france 07), simply Kiwi arrogance, it hurts to say, but Im glad Australia won.

    peace out x

  • Kind of amusing- seems to me as though every time a NZ ballcarrier broke the Aussie line, rather than call it "strong running" the commentators called it "terrible defense" (probably a combo of the two in reality). They would rather criticize their own side than give any credit to the opposition.

By Anonymous Canick, at November 02, 2010 6:11 pm

  • Dom3, learn the rules buddy.
    Learn basic physics too.
If a guy is travelling forward and realeases a ball abckwards on an angle, it will float thru the air at the same velocity the person who thru it was travelling, even as it flies thru the air backwards on a diagonal angle. It's basic physics, nothing anyone can do about it.
If you knew the laws, you'd know the law about forward passes relates to the direction a player throws the ball (ie backwards), not where the ball is caught or ends up.
That's because again, if a guy si runnign forward and throws a ball backwards, it's always going to float forwards at the same time.
That's why the rule stalks about the ball being thrown backwards, not where it's caught.

  • There were repeated infringments on the line, three in a row on the All Blacks tryline, the head high was just one, and the most vicious.
The All Blacks do concede penalties on the line.
In regards to Mccaw, he was swearing and carrying on at Cooper the whole game, kicked hima t one point, stomped on Pocock.

Quade's push on richie was pretty bad taste, but hey, he does rob houses in his spare time so it doesn't really surprise me.

When NZ score, its terrible Australian defense.

When Australia score, its amazing Wallaby attack.

Most Bias commentary, its a joke.

As for Quade Cooper, it seems like he has caught the Springbok disease... They are always shoving people on the ground after they score.

A forward pass a nothing to do with the fact that a player is moving or not. All your explainations are dumb.

The rule only tells that there is a forward pass when tha ball moves toward the try line, momentum or not!!! law 12.1

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 03, 2010 1:35 am

  • Full credit to the Aussies. It was a game of two halves (albeit split into quarters). Congrats on the win!

Quade Cooper would not have pushed Ritchie off the play if he could have tackled him in play.

Must say however, I loved watching Cooper's work in defence. Andrew Merhtens may have done the odd ragdoll impression in defence, but Quade is in another world. He impersonates a funnel.

By Anonymous Ben Dover, at November 03, 2010 1:43 am

  • Not sure why the Cooper shove is a big deal. It happened, it was childish, it's over.

More pressing I think would be Cooper's game going missing for a large portion of the second half. Maybe attribute it to him being young, and maybe he'll get more steady with time, but his bad decisions, once started, seemed to cascade. Either way, he pulled it together at the end, so good on him for that. I don't really see OZ having a better option at 10; Giteau works just fine at 12.

Ashley-Cooper, Mitchell, O'Connor, and Beale are a pretty lethal combination and thoroughly enjoyable to watch.

By Anonymous Jeremy, at November 03, 2010 6:04 am

  • What happens with Ioane comes back??? He's hard to leave out of the starting line up. Maybe outside cover on the bench.

Australia is so lucky in that they have players who can play 10/12 very easily... And Giteau can play 9 if need be, very versatile back line.

By Anonymous Nicko, at November 03, 2010 6:42 am

  • Lots of Wallabies to come back actually.
Certain starters would be James Horwill at lock, Wycliff Palu at no8 and probably Ioane (he'll replace Mitchell on the wing, unless Ashley-Cooper is injured and Horne isn't around).
Other guys who are potential starters:
Rob Horne, Tatafu Polota-Nau and Dan Vickerman.

If the law was interpreted that way it would make the game impossible because every flat pass by a fast running player keeps moving forward in its flight. Basic physics. Pull up every flatish pass in rugby and see what sort of game you've got. Please tell me you're not a ref.

Fry I think its a big deal because cooper high tailed it out of there as fast as he could and didnt face up to the consequences....i.e. getting beaten to death by mccaw and the rest of the AB's

had it been elsom who did it or something, we'd all think 'wow that was uncalled for and intense' but because it was cooper words like 'wimp' etc are coming out because it was clearly a 'cheap shot' (nothing in it but the running away bit was very queer!)

    http://www.irblaws.com/EN/laws/3/12/111/during-the-match/knock-on-or-throw-forward/definition-throw-forward/#clause_111

It's simple. If the ball travels forwards from it's starting point it is a forward pass irrelevant of motion, movement etc...

By the way, great game. Hope the Autumn Internationals are this good (and fiesty)

  • Tonka the problem is both of those incidents were when McCaw was on the floor...

The first was marginal from cooper but was he making a point looking over McCaw (not condoning the kick from McCaw at all!!)

The second he came in because he saw an opportunity to get one up on a guy that would clearly come out on top in a 'fair fight'

Im not so bothered about the incident, as far as im concerned it was a fantastic effort to hold on til the end!!! and much like with the scots (except they won this match) the aussies didnt give up until the ref finished the game...

    By Anonymous (u-p)rick, at November 03, 2010 3:41 pm

im not trying to bitch about anyone here but cooper was out of line running in and pushing mccaw, and lets face it, he came off looking like a bit of a floppy cock as he moved amongst his team mates..

  • Re: Cooper, just such a stupid move, and good point, he high-tailed it away from McCaw as soon as he could, which is why Mils put a hand in his face. Just a classless player. And looking at just his form, I'm consistently unimpressed, the guy simply cannot make a tackle at test level, which is why the ABs constantly went down his channel.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 03, 2010 5:10 pm

  • Quade "Funnel" Cooper. I like it. Guiding opposition players down his channel since 2009.

By Anonymous Felix, at November 03, 2010 10:24 pm

  • Wow, some bitter people here.
Cooper is one of the most entertaining and exciting players in the game.
His defence is a worry, but his amazing attacking ability makes up for it.
Get over the shove, Mccaw was in his ear all game, swearing at him, trying to put him off his game. Mccaw kicked him and got in his ear (I was at the game, you probably couldn't see it from tv, but Mccaw was giving Cooper shit the whole game).
So Cooper shoves Mccaw and tells him to fuck off.
And we all move on and get over it.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 03, 2010 11:12 pm

  • Hey Jimbo, the official interpretation of that rule for the last thrity years has always been about the act of throwing forward.
Notice the rule that defines a forward pass explicitly states that it's forwrd if it's thrown forward, towards the opposition try line.
It says nothing about where it travels, where it's caught, where it ends up in relation to where it was thrown.
Anyone with any background in reffing the game knows that officially it doesn't matter where the pass is caught. It's about the act of throwing the ball backwards.
    It's due to physics.
It's not that hard to grasp.
I understand people want it to be simple, but sadly if we applied your logic Jimbo, about half the passes in a game would have to be considered forward, because any pass that's thrown as a guy runs forward will drift thru the air towards the opposition try line. That is impossible to stop, again it's physics.
The rule has been understood that way for literally decades.
Most people who know rugby, know about this.

  • Wallace, I was at the game and that's a load of shit. Stop making excuses for a player who obviously doesn't understand the concept of winning with grace.

Iv got no problem with the AB's loosing a game to the Wallabies (especially a game as awesome as the HK test). The two best teams in the world going at it is what rugbys all about.

But what makes it frustrating is bias commentary (Greg Martin you mummys boy) and some wannabe carlos spencer putting a cheap shot on after the game is over.

    POOR EFFORT

  • to the above anonymous you wern't at the game so shut it.

  • My point, (u-p)rick, was that there's no need to harp on it because was anyone not aware Cooper is a "wimp" (that is in relative terms to professional rugby players; Cooper is still in far better shape than myself, etc. etc.). He's a flyhalf, and he's not Wilkinson or Carter...of course he's a riled-up turd. All of them are. Not as bad at being annoying as scrumhalves, because scrummies are annoying the full 80. Number 10's are only like that when they get back into the lead. I recall a certain Sexton-O'Gara moment many months ago being similar to this.

But with a game as exciting as this one, why get caught up on something like a stupid cheap shove?

  • ARGGGGGGHHHH!!

Alright if you fools have such a problem with Cooper then one of you muppets go make a video of all the unsportsmanlike stuff he’s done and see if Grant will post it on RD. He won’t because one; it would be a very short video and two it’s not what the majority of us want to see here.

The video is titles "The Bledisloe Cup classic in Hong Kong - full highlights" talk about the game and how great it was or go to youtube and whinge on one of the many Cooper McCaw videos.

  • Wow! What a finish. Thx, RD for the highlights.

Now, is there anyway for those of us the USA to see the full match? Are there any online options that has an archived copy of the game? I'm ok with paying for it. With the coming demise of RugbyZone and Setanta having pulled out of the USA earlier this year seeing full Internationals has become difficult.

  • Some people, when their team loses a game, don't want to talk about that, and instead they channel all their frustration into something else.
In this case some of kiwis are channeling that frustration to Cooper for something that, let's face it, amounts to very little.
He shoved a guy he'd been having a running battle with all game.
Sure, that mnight annoy you, I understand that, but as an Aussie I'm glad he did it.
So what if it annoys the kiwis, maybe that's what he was trying to do.
Regardeless it's a very small incident,. and the focus on it, is really a reflection of the frustration some people have about losing the game.
It's as innocuous as the kick Mccaw gave Cooper.
And anon, if you were at the game, I noticed Mccaw giving it to Cooper, as did my two mates who came along with me.
    I'm surprised you didn't notice.
Either way, what a game anyway? Very entertaining I thought, maybe we could focus on that?

  • Jimbo said...
It's simple. If the ball travels forwards from it's starting point it is a forward pass irrelevant of motion, movement etc...

Read Tom's post or any of the numerous others making the same point on this and other sites in recent years, and like he says, it's really not that hard to grasp.

  • Jeremy, Mortlock has been injured on and off for most of this season.
He's basically getting old, and Deans really loves youth, so combined with his ongoing injury worries, he's been pushed to the outer.
He needs to have a really strong season for the Melbourne Rebels in this seasons' S15, or basically his international career is over.

  • yeah why does cooper fly in and shove mccaw in the head when he is just sitting.
ref could have given nz a penalty restart? he woudn't be so cocky then, esp for someone who cant tackle.

  • I have one word for Quade Cooper - RETARD.

The reason he is playing for Australia is because there is not a hope in hell he would have made it in the All Blacks team.

The aggression he used on McCaw in the scrum incident was also plain stupid, that is why McCaw reacted with a kick. I would've done the same thing.

  • lol Kiwis and their sour grapes.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 17, 2011 9:44 am

  • Pretty funny the anti-Cooper comments.
They don't even really know wha they're going on about.
That last anon guy said Cooper started something at a scrum! Cooper's a fly-half mate, he wasn't anywhere near the scrum. The only incident at the scrum was when Mccaw stomped on Pocock's leg, for absolutley no reason at all.
There was also a seperate incident where Mccaw kicked Cooper in the leg, because he was pissed off that Cooper had succesfully cleared him out of a ruck.
Did you even see the game? Who's the retard?

  • o'connor looks like a real class act in the making, scores so many tries against top quality teams at that age. Beale also looks like a fantastic prospect with great pace.
