Midweek Madness - Mils Muliaina's rough night

I often feel for fullbacks. One of the most exposed positions on the field, any errors you make are clear for the world to see. Poor clearing kicks are scrutinised, and dropped high balls normally result in one thing - more up-and-unders heading your direction.

All Black fullback Mils Muliaina is one of the most talented players in the game though, and is particularly good under the high ball. He's as cool as a cucumber, even if he has gorilla’s charging down at him while he has his eyes on the ball, unaware of their presence.

Against the Wallabies in the Bledisloe Cup in 2003, Muliaina found himself under not one, but two well placed up-and-unders that he got up high for and took easily. The problem for him wasn’t the catch, it was the manner in which he came back down to ground.

First, Wendell Sailor took him in the air, resulting in a card for Big Dell and a painful landing for Mils.

Then, realising the fullback may be feeling a little weary still, less than 5 minutes later Larkham puts it up on Muliaina again. He once again takes brilliantly, but is once again taken in the air, this time by hooker Brendan Cannon.

Rough night indeed.

  • Hi guys... Yeah sorry about that. Big mistake on my part. It's now been made public, and will hopefully be viewable shortly.

Only 'friends' would have been able to see it when it's private, so that caused the confusion.

Thanks for the patience and understanding. Shout once you can all see it. thanks!

  • It's working now.

Muliaina.. damn, I really think that should have been another yellow card, I'm sure both tackles in the air were malicious. Great catches though.

  • Cannon took him down safely it's why he wasn't sent off.

    haha

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 04, 2008 5:49 pm

  • Sailor served his 2 year suspension and has recently signed for a rugby league team in Aus, not so?

I don't know how he's gotten on though. Would be interesting to see.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 04, 2008 6:07 pm

  • He's signed on for the St George Illaware Dragons. I don't think he's actually had a game yet though.

Should do well. He was a league player before Union. Just whether he's fit enough is the question.

  • Hahahah check out how unbelievably high pitched the ref's voice goes at 1.24. He says "no" about 5 times and sounds like an absolute girl

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 04, 2008 10:13 pm

  • when I see Sailor going to the bin it reminds me of habana on percy in the 2007 s14 final... habana's was worse but no sinbin.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 04, 2008 11:51 pm

  • 1. Sailor's looked bad, but when you look at the replay it just looks mis-timed, not malicious.
    2. Larkham's didn't look as bad, but was in my opinion, more malicious.
    3. Fuck me. Sailor's massive.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 05, 2008 12:26 am

  • the offence is not about bringing them down safely, but not tackling a man in the air. Sailor just blundered into him and cannon actually tackled him. both were not great.

  • down under rugby, its noteven real!!!!!!!!!!! good old wendall "cokehead" sailor, stick t league ye prick!!!!!!!!!!!
the irish will beat you good and proper on saturday........................

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 05, 2008 2:02 am

  • i remember this one, it was not a card because the ref judged that cannon was looking down and in the process of making the takle when Muliaina jumped and that Muliania jumped at the last second.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 05, 2008 2:35 am

  • I remember that. Is it possible to get the full match? I'd love to see it again. We scored twice with Sailor off and finished with 50 pts :D

And to dan, if you're talking about against NZ, Ireland have NEVER beaten us. So good luck with that

By Blogger Unknown, at June 05, 2008 3:21 am

  • Sailor's tackle was deliberate...you see his arms raised as he goes in for the tackle! As for the second one, you could argue Mils raises his legs to make it look like he was higher off the ground!

Either way the Ozzie rugby team are a bunch of animals! Particularly Sailor, he is an out and out thug! No more, no less!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 05, 2008 1:23 pm

  • Ah Wendell how did you get so big.

    By Blogger Fun-bus, at June 05, 2008 2:47 pm

  • i thought that was brilliant from muliaina to goo up and collect the ball again after gettin knocked down lk that and still have the balls to goo and doo it again knowing he was gonna get smashed Fair play

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 05, 2008 5:37 pm

  • The laws state if a man is in the air, he isn't to be touched. I think the ref should have shown another yellow for the second offense.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at June 05, 2008 5:41 pm

  • ...rough nite.
