Italy beat Scotland with a last minute drop

In their final game of the Six Nations 2008 campaign, Scotland's improving performances came to none, as they lost out to Italy with virtually the last kick of the game.

Scotland were leading 17-10 at halftime and were looking good, with few errors and good control of the game.

But the last twenty minutes in Rome proved vital after star number eight Sergio Parisse intercepted a pass and flew off down field, tossing the ball inside which resulted in a great try for Gonzalo Canale.

Chris Paterson slotted another perfect penalty later in the game, resulting in a perfect Six Nations kicking record to add to his perfect World Cup record.

With time almost up and the score at 20-20, Italy pinned Scotland back deep in their half which led to Italy's Andrea Marcato slotting the match winning drop goal from 22 meters out to seal a famous Italian victory in front of a passionate home crowd.

Congratulations must go out to Italy who, under Nick Mallett, will surely get better and better.

Final Score: 23-20 to Italy

  • Marcatto looks promising, but did he finally get to play flyhalf, or did mallet insist on massi?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 4:55 pm

  • Masi played flyhalf. Marcato played full back. He looks really exciting though.

  • parks is terrible!!!! only got picked because of injury!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 5:18 pm

  • I think that wen Bortolussi will be able to play (he's injured) Marcato will be the fly-half.
However great match, good scrum for Italy (especially first row) and great work whit the throw in.
Good game for the Scottish back's.
Go on you tube and listen to the Italians speakers!!!!!!!!! (grande Cecinelli)
    Sorry for my English!!!!!!

  • Really enjoyed this game. Good to see the Scottish flinging the ball about after the drabness of Murrayfield. Another great game for Blair, and a great tournament, a shame more of his fellow Scots aren't following suit.

  • the result was not 23-20 but 26-20 !

This drop allow Italy to be 5th in the 6 nations tournament, and not last.

Italy must win the match with more than 5 points to overcame Scotland.

So Italy is 5th and scotland 6th.

  • You dreamed!
Result is 23-20. Italy is last and 6th!
    Sorry.
Regarding Italy's second try it seems (to me..) that the pass was forward. if you look at the place where Sergio Parisse was sending the ball, and the place where it fell down?.. It is forward...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 5:42 pm

  • What a player Parisse is! With him, Castro and the rest of the Italian forwards to work with Mallet will have this side competitive in time for next years 6N.

And if we're going to split hairs over tries how on earth were Scotland allowed their first? Henderson clings onto the ball for dear life after he's tackled, while two Italians try to take it while on their feet before any Scotts arrive! And doesn't it get knocked on before Hogg picks it up?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 5:57 pm

  • seemed like a good game

By Blogger Don, at March 18, 2008 7:28 pm

  • Hackney Griffin - The ball from Henderson went backwards hence why the ref allowed it. BBC iPlayer shows it, plus my mate who went to the match said it was legitimate as he was set close to the Italian try line in the first half.

Very dissapointed with our campaign and Frank Hadden for a bout a year now. Scotland can only improve when he buggers off. Why do we leave it till then to play our most attractive rugby? Doh!

Congrats Italy. Here's hoping we get better soon!

  • yeh that pass was forward now that i look at it. he passes it a foot or two before the 22 and the ball lands a foot or two after the 22.

and the guy who sed it was 26-20 . . . . mate what are you on??

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 8:46 pm

  • Good game, and well done italy they deserved at least one win this year so glad they got it. Scotland played their best rugby in this game, so it shows when they want to they can. Hadden has to go surely, he's not good enough.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 8:49 pm

  • scotland only attempted to play good rugby because they had nothing to lose. wales and france play running rugby even in the most important games, however they can do it because they are good. A few trys should not have been allowed but shit happens. Italy could be a real force when they have a fly-half that can control a game.

  • I see people complaining about Brian Moore and Eddie Butler, but what about Andy Nicol (indeed, Andy Who?).

He was so biased and trying to talk up the Scots, and he just could NOT stop talking. He was really getting on my nerves, especially when Italy (deservedly) got the penalty try.

The referee had set his stall out right from the start, where scrums were concerned, so the Scots had it coming...

  • dam...hate to lose to drop goals( i have myself) because its 3 points on the board against you when you've done nothing wrong! like give away a penalty...or poor defending you know yourself!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 18, 2008 11:21 pm

  • does anyone else see that parisse's pass was forward. He passed it from in front of the 22 and it bounced inside of the 22, interesting.

By Blogger gkalar, at March 19, 2008 12:10 am

  • for everyone that said that parisse's pass was forward please watch this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgMlDy2jP9s
I have had many a discussion with refs (obviously i don't play international standard so their level is quite so so) after games about this and even among some of them there is a misconception of the rule on forward passes....also parisse's pass was very long.......FORZA AZZURI!

By Blogger poccio, at March 19, 2008 12:46 am

  • sorry about the typo....FORZA AZZURRI!!!

By Blogger poccio, at March 19, 2008 12:47 am

  • the youtube video referred to by poccio clarifies that it wasn't a forward pass.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 19, 2008 1:52 am

  • Does anyone saw the interview between the BBC lady and Andy Nicol in the half time?

ANdy nicol said Sex.. Six NAtion
And the lady said then clit

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 19, 2008 11:46 am

  • Parisse played a great Six Nations and was constantly performing his best, which couldnt be said of some of the other star players. The best No. 8 of the tournament, definately.

Still I miss the long hair and the beard. Its not the same...

    By Blogger Sea-Bass, at March 19, 2008 4:20 pm

  • Poccio,
Great to remind folks of this video.

The law states "THROWN forward", not "TRAVELS forward".

There is still the element of judgement, even for a referee in perfect position is still there.

A simple rule of thumb is that the faster the passer is running, the "more" they are allowed for the pass to go forward. A stationary scrumhalf delivering from the base of a ruck gets NO forward momentum.

Everything asider, reward enterprising play. If the referee isn't sure, then no call -- play on.

On the flipside, I think that if a player is throwing a 30m skip pass into a nasty headwind, they will have to throw forward to make the pass flat.

No referee worth his salt would be so pedantic to call a thrown forward here. Not even Steve Walsh or Wayne Barnes.

By Blogger Cheyanquí, at March 20, 2008 5:58 pm

  • Yeah, Parisse rocked.

Great fun too watching the Italians sub in an entire front row.

Didn't Castrogiovanni score two tries on the tournament? Tied for 5th in the tournament. He and David Wallace (a flanker) were the only forwards to score more than one try in the tournament.

The Scots did as well. However, I think the Scots configured their bench that way because of the Italians.

Gotta agree with the BBC commentator who said that they Aussies want to get rid of the scrum contest because they suck at it.
The Wallabies need to find someone better than the drop-kicking Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man (Dunning).

By Blogger Cheyanquí, at March 20, 2008 6:02 pm

  • I could of got that drop goal and im a front rower! well dun tho Italy from a grudging Scot!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 22, 2008 1:02 pm

  • I was there at the stadio flaminio...what an emotion..it was unbelievable..I knew it had to finish with a drop...and congratulions to the scottish supporters..they were a lot and most of all congratulated with us for the victory...this is RUGBY

By Anonymous Anonymous, at March 25, 2008 4:28 pm

  • to the gut who says the pass was forward. the rule says that if a players momentum carries the ball forward but his hands propelled it backwards it is not a forward pass

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 10, 2008 3:36 am

  • some people are questioning frank haddens decision to continue using parks at fly half.
i go to alot of glasgow warriors games and parks just blows the crowd away, he scores tries, he drops goals and converts tries and penelties exelently.
however on the international field he just cant do anything apart from kicking away possesion and throwing crap passes that end up in opposition tries!
Scotland needs to find another flyhalf!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 26, 2008 3:11 pm

  • Italy under Sergio Parisse will continuously get better and better. also with Nick Mallet coaching hopefully we'll see italy win some trophies.
