Friday Funnies - Brian Moore and the gay slap

We've become accustomed to commentators making the odd peculiar comment over the years in the world of rugby. They're generally a highly criticised, pretty boring bunch who can at best make a game really enjoyable, or at worst, make it down right boring.

Former England Hooker Brian Moore has become famed for being brutally honest and saying what he pleases when commentating the big games. Loved by some, despised by others, Moore's commentary style is anything but dull.

Back in 2004 when England played Scotland in the Six Nations, Moore got himself in hot water over a comment he made about an altercation between Danny Grewcock and Andrew Henderson.

The BBC received a total of ten complaints after Moores 'gay slap' comment was used to describe the ineffectual blow by Henderson. They said the phrase violated guidelines concerned with “hurtful or inaccurate stereotypes.”

Funny to some, offensive to others, this bit of commentary history will now be part of our archives. We're pretty sure it isn't the last time Moore will be featured either.

  • I like Moore commentating but this isn't really worth featuring. Cusiter's tumble wasn't much either.

  • i acctually hate brian moore he is a spectator rather than a comentator. if u dont believe me look at the 2008 6 nations videos.
he ruins some games for me.

  • Speak for yourself Anonymous.

I thought it was pretty damn funny.

  • brian moore speaks wisdom and forwardthinking sometimes

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 17, 2008 9:14 pm

  • moore can be okay but most times he comes across as being an idiot.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 17, 2008 9:16 pm

  • grrrr can't stand Brian Moore and i'm english.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 17, 2008 9:18 pm

  • at least hes passionate, more than can be said for alot of commentators. also, just wondering how many gay guys have you seen fight with exceptional technique? just wondering how many gay UFC fighters are out there hating the stereotype given to gay people?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 17, 2008 9:51 pm

  • To anonymous above. Internet sensation youtube brawler and probably one of the most famous MMA fighters around lost a fight in about 10 seconds the other week to a gay guy.

He lost to exceptional technique. And i tell you. The gay man who beat him was flaming. Pink hair and nails and all!

And he destroyed the gruffiest ghetto raised beard wearing monster you'll lay eyes on.

  • I hate Brian Moore,

he acts like a spectator, justs growns every so often.

    watta pilloc

  • Brian Moore knows the game quite well but he is FAR from my my desired list of Six-Nations commentators. His usual cohort, Eddie Butler, is quite good but Moore himself is hardly impartial. This particular incident is fine because Henderson was being a twat himself but I though how he lost his composure whilst calling the Italy - England game in the 2008 Six Nations was downright unprofessional.

I just wish the BBC would have done with it and pay Stuart Barnes to come in and take Brian Moore's place. Barnes is more experienced as a commentator, doesn't have a slight lisp, has a better temperament and knows the game better than Moore. Kudos to Eddie Butler. though. Most people wouldn't know he's Welsh, even when Wales are strolling to win Grand Slams.

  • Brian Moore can be hilarious but he can also be disrespectful, ignorant and is always bias towards England. He is not a good commentator altho I think it would be fun to watch a match with him down the pub.
Overall, he's like the guy (and ever rugby club has one) who sits in the corner with a pint and critises everything and everyone and is generally considered to be a bit of a joke

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 18, 2008 12:15 am

  • Don't know which fighter you mean - could be St Pierre but he's not flaming. In any case can hardly call a soft punch 'gay' as the Kray brothers were gay and not exactly sissies.

    Brian Moore is a dinosaur.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 18, 2008 12:40 am

  • Seth Petruzelli vs Kimbo Slice. Don't ask me how Slice lost that one.

Lots of UFC fighters are gay and would probably wipe the floor with Brian Moore.

Brian Moore wishes he was gay.

  • Brian moore is an idiot who doesn't understand the game! a right bad commentator! n as 4 eddie butler, a disgrace 2 call him welsh, u wud av thort he was english he is so biased! cant stand him!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 18, 2008 12:49 am

  • Brian Moore commentates as if he were in the pub and I for one love it.
Eddie Butler on the other hand I can't stand. Especially with his insistence on calling Lote Tuquiri.......Lote TUNquiri. Anyone else noticed this?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 18, 2008 1:05 am

  • jake you idiot tuqiri is a fijian name hence 'q' = 'ng' ie. qera is ngera, naqelevuki is nangelebuki etc.

    brian moore is jokes.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 18, 2008 2:09 am

  • My point being he says TUNquiri not Tunggiri as it should be pronounced. IDIOT.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 18, 2008 2:52 am

  • biased and his opinion changes with the wind. he's the Jeremy clarkson of the rugby world says things just to be controversial.

reason why most English are hit with the I'm a prick stereotype.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 18, 2008 5:59 am

  • I think you either love Brian Moore, or you hate him.
I love him; when England plays he's more of a supporter than an unbiased commentator, but I don't mind that. He's honest enough, and man enough to give credit where it's due.

He's not your run of the mill commentator, but that's what makes him as good as he is.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 18, 2008 9:20 am

  • Moore's worst moment of commentry was in the 2008 RBS Six Nations match. France - England. One of the elglish props is whacking people in the ruck for no reason. The ref gives a penalty against England and Moore's reaction is "I don't care he's french!". What a biassed git.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 18, 2008 10:51 am

  • moore is biased - no question. that's why they team him with eddie butler - he's not biased. lots of commentators are also biased though - all sothern hemisphere commentators for example.

moore is also very funny sometimes though in this clip is unacceptably homophobic.

Stuart Barnes on the other hand is a useless sack of shit and a waste of skin.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 18, 2008 11:55 am

  • I don't think you can love moore. He brings an unhealthy dollup of bad sportsmanship into the commentry box and has pissed me off several times openly encouraging violence on the pitch, and as for his and eddie butlers dreary commentry they seem to be more concerned with fighting with each other rather than the game.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 18, 2008 3:16 pm

  • I have to confess, i like Moore.

In my OPINION, he is one of the few British commentators who isn't a flat and dull.

Sure, he's biased. But i don't understand the British obsession with commentators who show no emotion or passion.

Look at the Aussies. Without question the most biased commentators throughout the rugby world. Yet still, the greatest and most entertaining.

I'll have Brian Moore over any of the other soft Beebites who want to turn our game into touch rugby.

As for the ad. It's great. Sure, it'll never touch the films speech from the man that is Al Pacino. But this isn't a hollywood film, it's an advertisment.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 18, 2008 8:41 pm

  • hes great cos hes blunter than any other commentator...maybeee a bit biased tho haha

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 18, 2008 8:44 pm

  • Brian Moore is a legend, gotta love his honesty!

    Butler is pretty good...

Iain you sound like a guy who watches alot of rugby. But barnes, stuart barnes i hate that guy.. too me he's just a welshman who went to play for england and is making money off that fact!!! ggrrr lol

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 19, 2008 3:34 pm

  • i love the fact as soon as moore makes his comment, neither of the commentators say anything else. theyre probably looking at each other in the booth thinking "balls- we're going to receive complaints".

moore is a douche. no question.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 19, 2008 10:52 pm

  • Moore has balls, and a straightforward approach. Brian Moore for prime minister

  • He is the worst sports commentator that I have ever heard.. if the BBC employs guys like this then it shows how limited they must be on their budget!! Just listen to his constant one-sided rubbish in the England vs France 6 Nations match.. total rot!
