Brian O'Driscoll punched vs Bayonne
This is the punch that nearly dashed Ireland's hopes of inspirational leader Brian O'Driscoll taking them to the World Cup.
A cheap shot from Kiwi lock Mikaera Tewhata, in a World Cup warmup match against the French side Bayonne, caused a fractured sinus and lacerations to O'Driscoll's face.
BOD will be out for 4 weeks, missing the first group game of the World Cup. The injury is not as bad as initially feared though, with O'Driscoll not requiring surgery.
The game was not televised, but as with all Brian O'Driscoll controversial incidents, amateur footage appears miraculously, and this time from the Bayonne video analyst of all people.
A little birdy tells me that the word on the street is that the French side were eye gouging in the mauls and when BOD ran in to help it's because the Irish hooker was getting a working over, before eventually dropping to the floor.
The culprit of the suckerpunch has been banned for two matches, and since apologised for his actions, saying it's not in his nature and would like to apologise to O'Driscoll face to face.
The final score in this ill tempered match was 42-6 to Ireland, with 5 yellow cards being issued.
Ireland are wearing blue as it's not an official test.

Christ weather you like him or not, you have to respect his rugby abilities! and the force BOD brings with him to the Irish team.
Playing a French before the world cup is a silly idea for obvious reasons! He got rumbled in NZ with the lions and now again by another Umanga country man. The great All Black nation of hounourabe rugby warrior's ... or the Pasific island robbing elitests whom dont mind spoiling the game of rugby to Win...? take your pick..
(and yes im Irish)

Brian "Oi coulda fookin doied" O'Driscoll is as bad as anyone for dirty play and is also a great player, so he's going to get a slap now and then. For once he was helping out a team mate so didn't deserve it here, but it'll do for all the other times he goes unpunished.

irony that he was a kiwi? take out the best player in the northern hemisphere in the run up to the world cup and captain of the only real opposition in new zealands way!
By Anonymous, at August 21, 2007 1:00 pm
and captain of the only real opposition in new zealands way yeah, right. Ireland are a real worry for New Zealand.
Why are the Irish so blinkered? They were hammered by a very average Scotland and stupid enough to go and play against a french side who were never going to do anything other than fight.
South Africa and maybe Australia are the only sides who'll be anywhere near NZ at the world cup

average scottish team, which game were u watching the commentators admitted it was one of the biggest scottish teams they'd ever seen, as well as considering the fact ireland had BOD and POC as the only 1st string players on from the start against scotland who played a very strong team (patterson, the lamonts, kelly brown, jacobson, blair, henderson and many more)i think we can discount that game and any other warm up games the idea being to see who can cut it at the world cup and select a side, rather than always going for the win. Ireland were not hammered and on the day more decision went i favour of scotland double movement on the last try etc. Fair enough though playing a french side not the smartest thing to do. and no ireland not the biggest worry for new zealand keep saying that and the world will wait until u choke again.

it's rubbish. plain and simple.it's not a nz conspiracy theory it's just another french team trying to scrap with the big boys and getting frustrated. go watch a college side try to take on a mens team, same thing happens. rubbish.

Did BOD kick a kiwi's dog or something? As for the New Zealand does not having to worry about Ireland in the WC comment your f-in nuts. I like Ireland to make the finals or atleast the final four. I think the All Dirty Blacks are going to run into some bad luck outta pool play. Maybe they could be like this years Brazil in Soccer's WC. I wonder what the odds are for the All Dirty Blacks not to make the final four? I'd like that bet.

that's a massive call, doubt too many people will be backing it so you should have some great odds! go for it. must say i am a kiwi but i really do fancy south africa for the world cup! such awesome young talent and aggrevise rugby style its good to watch. as for the final four im sure the all blacks, ireland and south africa will be around. maybe australia or even England or France if they can sort out there forms!

totally agree with you Rafeaki, at present i feel a bit uneasy about England's chances! i am English and i do feel the potential is there, just needs some good old fine tuning! loving the prospect of Danny Cipriani the young Wasps fullback! however it must be said i feel the final four will be the all blacks, South Africa, Ireland, France, with south africa to win the final wouldn't like to guess who they'd play in the final! if BOD can go uninjured throughout the comp, Ireland could have an edge coming in to the semi's, he's massive for their chances!

Terrible behaviour but course they were going to be rough, why go and play a club team from the country who are holding the comeptition? There's plenty of club teams here to play, and none of them would have been reckless enough to do anything that would put their national players out of the world cup! Idiocy.
Anyone know who the song is by that's playing in the clip?

i dont doubt BOD's abilities easily best outside centre in the world but i think its gr8 to see a world class player get a hiding evry now and again just to show people they're human to

I'm Irish and i agree with those who say Ireland wont get out of the group, Irelands scrum is complete rubbish and the forwards played crap against Italy, Scotland and Argentina (although it was Ireland's B teams out against Argentina and Scotland), on form, Ireland could challenge for the world cup, but at the moment we haven't got a chance - P.S. that was a cheap shot and was not deserved
By Anonymous, at August 27, 2007 8:51 pm
Uh, first off, where were the forwards backing him up? Secondly, Why have Ireland become so soft? Being Irish, I'm a little concerned to say the least as to why we're losing (or almost in the case of Italy) to teams we annihilated only a few ago?
