Brian Lima knocks himself out spectacularly
As much respect as we have for Brian Lima for being the only man to ever appear at five World Cups, he lost the plot on sunday.
The man who demolished Derick Hougaard four years ago came on to make history against the Springboks. After being on the field for 3 mins, there was a bit of poetic justice as he attempted an outrageous tackle on flyhalf Andre Pretorious that was not only late, but very high.
The big Samoan veteran knocked himself out instantly. Pretorious miraculously got up, with his head still connected to the rest of his body and probably breathing a sigh of relief after seeing the Chiropractor coming off second best.
In my opinion Lima got what he deserved. This tackle was totally illegal and on another day could have caused serious injury to the opposition. If it were a little lower and earlier it would have been perfectly legal and added to his legendary status. But it wasn't.
The question now is if he'll get the opportunity to redeem himself through the rest of the tournament. A concussion is not to be treated lightly, and with the group games still to be played, it would be tragic for the Samoans to be without him. Perhaps it will be safer for the other teams though, as Derick Hougaard will testify too.

great site but you do talk some rubbish. That wasn't late or high. He was already committed, granted it was close but nothing illegal there.
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 10:43 am
Have to disagree with that, but hey, each to their own.
By GMC, at September 11, 2007 10:57 am
It wouldn't have been high if Pretorius was 9ft tall.
By noikz, at September 11, 2007 11:07 am
I think it was only marginally late, but it was pretty high and he didn't even try use his arms. Justice that he took a knock-out!
By Unknown, at September 11, 2007 11:08 am
The Samoans are a dirty bunch and tried their best to injure the Springboks throughout the game. Justice for the Chiropractor was sweet!
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 11:11 am
I have to say I'd say that was just a fierce tackle...he just lost out 'cause Pretorius was so quick.
By Stuey, at September 11, 2007 11:51 am
It was completely illegal, and an ugly challenge. As the man said, poetic justice.
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 12:16 pm
"Wasn't late or high" - dont know what game that guy was watching! It was intentionally high! Was a little late to say the least.........
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 12:29 pm
Did you know an anagram of Brain Lima could be An*l Bi Rim?
Sorry, was getting bored
...can also have Animal Rib....
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 1:09 pm
It was late and he knocked himself out on Andre's head. But the best was that he had pointed to Andre just a minute earlier and warned him his time was up.
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 1:15 pm
Definitely late & high but in reply to what 'anonymous' (your mother never give you a name?) at 11:11 AM said I think the Springboks gave back as much as they received. It's just that the Bokke are much better at doing the dirty stuff & getting away with it on the field. Also they have a knack for getting under the skins of opponents and winding them up - which, to be fair, is perfectly legal & fair play.
By fishboy, at September 11, 2007 1:20 pm
Dont think it was late but the fact that he didnt make any attemp to wrap his arms around makes it illegal, the samoans are a hard bunch and was 1on1 much stronger than the boks, but the boks teamplay was 1000x better.
Could you please try to post Habana 4 tries against Samoa, there were some great individual spark in 2 of them.
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 2:15 pm
I dunno, i wanna see this in slow-mo, but does anyone think he was stunned by hitting his head therefore he didnt wrap his arms?! to me it looked as if he would have made a half assed attempt to wrap his arms, but got the blow to the head before he could....!?!? i dunno, just putting that theory out there for you all!
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 3:45 pm
Shocking how anybody can dispute the foulness of that try...he might have been committed already but he had no intention of using his arms or making a "safe" tackle. Nothing but a thug! The Samoans deserved to loose. And hopefully with that concussion Lima will miss a game or two. And Fishboy the definiion of professional dirty play - ALL BLACKS.
BRILLIANT SITE!
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 4:07 pm
I had a good laugh in the pub at this incident. Big tough legend comes on, knocks himself out in a illegal tackle, goes off. And Pretorius just gets up, nothing doing... All in a matter of minutes. Haha :D
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 5:19 pm
The tackle really wasn't THAT late. Watch it again and start counting after the pass. Hit's him only a second or less after the pass. However, it was definatly not an attempted tackle as he is clearly trying to take his head off and gets what he deserves. Great performance by the Boks and as patriotic as I am I think England are going to struggle to cope on friday! Looking forward to it still :)
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 6:47 pm
that wasnt late at all. When you commit to a tackle at the speed that Lima did hell the hell is it possible to pull out. Come on guys a bit of objectivity on this. As for the wrap, I think he was out the instant he made contact and was therefore unable to wrap. But who knows?
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 7:43 pm
shjt up mate the first person that wrote on here. it was high and illigal because it was just a hit. he made nooo attempt what so ever to wrap the arm around, in my opinion lucky not to be sin binned

Please could you get those two or three MONSTER Henry Tuilangi runs on here from this game - Especially loved the one where he Lomu'd Rossouw AND Burger!
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 8:37 pm
That wasnt late at all. He was totally commited and going full force, and did you really expect the Chiropractor to slow down that fast?
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 10:24 pm
I hate it how fishboy always seems to agree with the rugbydump admin, go check the rest of his comments its pretty sickening, like he wants to score browney points and be "best friends"!
OOOOOh im fishboy!
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 10:28 pm
the tackle was illegal, and fishboy is a gayass
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 11:01 pm
In American football, leading with your head is called a "spear".
It's reckless for the spearer -- and it employed towards the head of the opposition (as often it is) -- VERY DANGEROUS for the receiver.
Punishment should have been considered, not only to protect the likes of Pretorius, but also the likes of the player delivering the hit.
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 11:09 pm
I have lots of respect for Lima and his contribution to rugby, but he lost the plot on that day, let it get to him and he delivered a dangerous tackle. (high and no arms). Big hits are worthy and plausable but trying to take players out of tournaments & their careers illegally is plain stupid.
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 11:43 pm
Not really a late tackle, although it was pretty high... luckily he did not land properly such thing
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 11:46 pm
pause the video on 00:15 and you will see where the contact is made.
The fact that he was moving so fast and with pretorious crouching as he passed is the reason the tackle slips upwards.
the fact his head is in the wrong place shows why he got knocked out and failed to wrap his arms, its not like they were by his side - they are outstretched! If his noggin was on the right side he would have taken pretorious to ground with him rather than falling off to the side KO'ed as we saw.
End of.
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2007 11:57 pm
by the time lima entered the game, the true illegal hit had already taken place thanks to the poor officiating in this game.
some of you leaving comments on here about samoans playing dirty do not understand the way pacific islanders play rugby.
its ok for some of you to call rugby a MAN'S game, but when real Men step on the field and make bone-crushing tackle's, you complain and make idiotic comments about them making illegal hit's.
oh and just a reminder, the world cup is far from over...and believe me-there will be more rib-shattering tackle's made by Manu Samoa...
By Anonymous, at September 12, 2007 12:27 am
Oh Karma. It wasn't late, but it was a little leary with the head to the sternum.
By Anonymous, at September 12, 2007 12:43 am
Here's his shot on Hougard
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9UCqhtOhoE
now that was a legal challenge. This was just shocking and had Pretorious been the one injured a red card would be the minimum that Lima could have expected
By Unknown, at September 12, 2007 12:47 am
Can someone please post the Burger challenge that lead to another disgraceful citing against the Jaapies...
And this comes from a Kiwi... I have no doubt the Poms made some frenetic calls to match officials to get Burger banned!
It's just not cricket!
By Anonymous, at September 12, 2007 7:00 am
Whether or not it was his intent to wrap before getting knocked out, there was no wrap and he went head to head, so the tackle was high/illegal. It wasn't late though.
By Anonymous, at September 12, 2007 7:21 am
i agree with no.7 he had his arms out to wrap him but got knocked out before he could get his arms around him. it was that high either his head hit his shoulder which is why he got knocked out. if his head had have been in the right place he would have tackled him around the chest. also he was completely commited if pretorius hestiates for a moment he would have caught him with the ball.
By Anonymous, at September 12, 2007 7:44 am
whoops that should have been wasn't that high.
By Anonymous, at September 12, 2007 7:45 am
Anonymous - if the "real men" of Samoa can't be "man" enough to play rugby but rather choose to assult players they need to "understand" that they shoulds go take up wrestling..they are nothing but thugs!!!
By Anonymous, at September 12, 2007 9:51 am
It wasnt that late.. but there was no attempt for a tackle.. his arms didnt even attempt to go round.. he just threw his body in.. lucky no one was seriously injured
By Anonymous, at September 12, 2007 2:46 pm
funny how lima doesnt wrap his arms around hougaard in the RWC 2003 tackle but no one says sh!t.
By Anonymous, at September 12, 2007 3:08 pm
how can you wrap your arms around someone if you get knocked out in the middle of it? Samoans are just hard tacklers some of the springbok players especially burger are chickens and always pull someones neck from behind or when they aren't looking
By Anonymous, at September 12, 2007 11:11 pm
well i think the tackle was fine he did try to use his arms it just that he knocked him self out before hand his head was in the wrong place you are all following the commntares nothing wrong he was just unlucky
By Anonymous, at September 12, 2007 11:37 pm
this is to jus a fan, wrestling? samoans have conquered wrestling already-ummmm let me see....there were "the wild samoans"-"rikishi"-"umaga"-oh and dont let me remind you who cemented the samoan people in wrestling-"THE ROCK"...and you have the nerve to add your 2 cents to my 20 dollars-i piss on you wanker...and lets not forget that 70% of the all blacks have samoan blood flowing through their veins.
so before you make an uneducated statement about my people-do your fu**in home-work first dickhead...>:[
By Anonymous, at September 13, 2007 12:00 am
Not late or high. Above the shoulders is high, Lima hits him below the shoulders. There's no debate there.
Debate about the use of arms all you want but this tackle was not late or high.
By Anonymous, at September 13, 2007 8:33 am
Got to say the tackle was late but not high, and only fractionally late so i give him the benefit of the doubt. Have to agree it is quite hard to wrap the arms around when you hit the man head first! Just a miscalculation on his part. Have to complain about the commentators, they were disgracefully biased against the Samoans as they always are saying that its not uncommon for 'dangerous' tackles to be thrown in. These guys need to look closer to home... Jerry Collins never wraps the arms along with many other top names, Vickery indeed doesn't even use the top half of his body!
Lima is a god, he deserves and has earned more respect in his career than what has been shown to him after one misjudged takle.
Thank you
By Anonymous, at September 13, 2007 11:37 am
the worse sin in this game was the disallowed samoan try, along with italy's against NZ, dreadfull decisions amazing it go for 2 of the 3 tri-nations teams. Will Hayman be cited and suspended for punching, should be if Burger gets 4 games for his tackle??
By Anonymous, at September 13, 2007 11:43 am
Anonymous above: I assume you're the same anon claiming the same crap in other comments - Hayman's punch got yellow carded on the field and was not anywhere near as dangerous as this tacle or Burger's one. Stop being a hater and think for a minute before writing nonsense.
By fishboy, at September 14, 2007 4:42 am
And as far as the disallowed try goes - the AB (Sivivatu? can't remember who) was tackled without the ball. Play stops there. End of story.
By fishboy, at September 14, 2007 4:48 am
i agree with the statments that say lima gets knocked out when he hit therefore not being able to wrap his arms but when it come to how high the hit was or the timeing of the tackle those 2 are 50/50
By Anonymous, at September 14, 2007 11:56 am
Samoa fans acts like their the hardest and most fierce rugby players in the world, weel if that were true why haven't u beatin any of the really strong nations?
By Anonymous, at September 14, 2007 1:33 pm
The Samoans are a hard-arse bunch of muscular, massive hitters but, unfortunately, they actually don't play very good rugby - at least not as good as they should.
I honestly don't understand why - some of the best players in the world are Samoan or New Zealand-Samoan - but it seems their teams never quite live up to the potential or reputation.
I hope they improve, rugby will be the winner if they do.
By fishboy, at September 14, 2007 3:00 pm
hey bro anonymous!!! stick to talking rugby and lima, you should never ever ever mention samoa ever again. I CAN SEE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By Anonymous, at September 16, 2007 1:54 am
"I honestly don't understand why - some of the best players in the world are Samoan or New Zealand-Samoan - but it seems their teams never quite live up to the potential or reputation."
Raw talent needs to be coached. Why do you think NZ-born, raised and coached Samoan players (and Fijians/Tongans) are the best around? Their natural skills are polished with an actual rugby brain and drilled into them just like all other kiwi kids. Technique and fitness is placed above above everything in NZ and its why the basics you see on TV are done with consumate ease.
Take Afro-Americans in NBA basketball. The majority of them have descended from West-Africa but where are West-African nations in Basketball? Nowhere because they havent got the money/competitions to demand top quality coaches to come over and develop the blindingly obvious natural ability.
Need i say more?
By Anonymous, at September 17, 2007 10:43 am
Anoymous above: I understand what you mean, and I think the coaching as a whole is an issue for PI teams. But I think, when it comes down to it, the money is the main problem - the lack of it for Samoa, Tonga & Fiji.
By fishboy, at September 18, 2007 4:36 am
No...da Samoans are not dirty...they hit you so hard that makes it look like a dirty play...dont be fucking racist...deffinition of dirty...not the allblacks...its the fucking springboks...if u dont agree with me, then u r not looking closely enough at how they play...about Lima's tackle...I think it was 100% fair...its just that he knocked his head before he finished off da tackle...Look at Burger's tackle in the air on Junior Polu...that was fucking high and illegal...so dont fucking point ur finger but think again...why do u think Burger got suspended??? The ref of that game was fucking bias...
By Anonymous, at September 22, 2007 2:59 am
No, the Samoans are not dirty, they just play hard and hit hard. Its fustrating when people say that just when a player from the team you back gets snapped.
By Unknown, at October 01, 2007 3:07 am
Why is it, whenever a "person of colour" does something wrong in this game... it's okay (Lima on Pretorius). But when a "white" person does something wrong (Burger on Polu), then it's racist, and he gets binned for a number of games?
The way certain people jump up and shout from their soap-boxes is pathetic! It's called rugby, girls. People get hurt. The rules state something along the lines of "...no arms used in a tackle...." ILLEGAL! Simple. Watch the two tackles, and see who uses arms, and who doesn't. Then decide who should have been binned, and who shouldn't. Don't just shout your mouth off if you don't actually know the rules, 'cos you're just making an ass of yourselves!
What a great tournament, besides the refs! (who taught them the rules anyway? Oh yes... the legendary Paddy O'Brien.... say no more
By Anonymous, at October 06, 2007 2:50 am
And to continue... (sorry if this is boring you)...
We've all seen some monstrous hits during this festival, and most of them have not only been legal, but BRUTAL! Why is it that most of the professional rugby players in the world can make decent HARD tackles, without spearing/forearms/etc, while some run in and knock themselves out?
Training? Or personal choice?
You decide.......
By Anonymous, at October 06, 2007 2:58 am
And to reply to "my team is the allblacks and....", if you think the Springboks are "f*****g dirty", and all the rest of your fantastic tirade... how flat is flat before it's forward? And how many "dummy runners" can you run at the opposition defense before it becomes either obstruction, or American Football?
Profanity will get you nowhere, knowledge will free your mind!
By Anonymous, at October 06, 2007 3:03 am
Do yourself a favour and do a qiuck visit to the RWC site and remind yourself of how the rules of this game work.....
By Anonymous, at October 06, 2007 3:42 am
This tackle got a lot of people really excited...based on all the comments!!! I believe both Samoa and South Africa has got some really tough players who put in big hits. That's why we love them so much. So stop with this racist crap and look at the footage. Both Lima and Burger were guilty of dangerous tackles, but only one got banned. That to me is not fair. It is funny though how Lima got in trouble the very next game against England when he tackled Jonny. I guess "all animals are equal, only some animals are more equal than others..."
By Anonymous, at October 13, 2007 1:46 am
to whoever goes against Brian Lima's tackle. Maybe you should run it up to Brian Lima so then the talking can start on the field and end on the field. I'm just sick of people talking when they cant do anything, but if you can do something then "RUN IT UP".
By Anonymous, at December 25, 2007 4:35 am
To all the fagats talking about Samoa just kick back because if you were that good then you'll be the one playing but hey no doubt BRIAN LIMA is the best hitter in the world he was the first man to put Jonah Lomu on his back side when Lomu was at his peek. SO ALL YOU JEALOUS HATERS OF THA HAMOS KICK BAK OR RUN IT UP. HAMO WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT..........
By Anonymous, at December 25, 2007 4:39 am
haha what a tool!
By Anonymous, at April 03, 2008 11:18 pm
um a little mistake in the introduction........
3 minutes into the 2nd half;)
would have been a hell of a first 3 minutes with SA scoring 40 points lol
By Anonymous, at August 27, 2008 11:14 pm
bD, you lost me there. It says "After being on the field for 3 mins"
Not sure what you're referring to.
By Anonymous, at August 28, 2008 6:45 pm
Bit pointless, but that final pass was about 3 metres forward. :
By Anonymous, at March 11, 2009 5:25 pm
I understand why are you all talking like that becouse you are jelous. about samoan people even rugby players, we use our own people for our rugby team but only new zealand use samoa, tonga, and fiji players to help them, they cant go by themselfs Brian lima is the famous player in the world.
