Jason Robinson torn hamstring

As if the 36-0 demise of a struggling English team wasn't enough, the current World Champions were forced to give a premature farewell to one of England and the British Lions' greatest heroes.

Who will ever forget his little in-and-out jink in 2001 to lacerate the greatest defense in the world on the Lions tour to Australia? Or his scintillating slide over the white wash in the Rugby World Cup final.

On friday night he was a standout for the English, one of the few players who looked to make a difference in a game where they were totally outplayed by the Springboks.

With blood pouring down his cheek and constantly getting peppered with high balls, Robinson showed true guts and stood proud, possibly being the only Englishman who could threaten the Boks' organised defence.

So when he pulled up with what looks like a torn hamstring, it was a sad moment for all. My initial reaction was that of sympathy, considering that it in all likelyhood will be the last time we see him on the international stage.

Thiry three year old Robinson however, thinks otherwise. He is determined to return and has not given up. The results of a MRI scan on monday will confirm his fate.

And if it's meant to be that it was his final appearance, then what better way than to leave with field with a standing ovation at the Stade de France.

"To hear the biggest roar of the evening as I limped off and seeing everyone on their feet applauding was a humbling moment," he said.

"If that's the way I am to go out of rugby, I will remember that as a very proud moment."

  • Hello, I would like to thank you for your page, excellent content.

    I've got a suggestion:
¿Could we see a compilation of the Georgia - Ireland forward War?

It looks like Ireland - Argentina on the 30st of September is going to be a huge forward confrontation as well.

  • GOD SAVE JASON ROBINSON BY THE WAY

  • Shame for him on a night when he was the only english player who should not be ashamed of his performance. He is a legend.

Credit to the saffers for not piling in on him and grabbing the ball, good sportsmanship.

  • yeah it was a shame to see him go off. Petty it didnt happen to perry the halfback. Hell the hell can he be the best halfback operating out of england. the guy has absolutely no vision nor rugby nous. Both of which are imperative for halbacks. As for Andy Farrell, he would be the most laboured donkey i have seen as an inside centre. He doesnt create space, gaps or options for his outside backs and has no step. accommpanied with no rugby nous.
God help english rugby if these guys are first choice.

  • Any chance of seeing Billy Whizz's 50m run, finished off by the pirrouette? The only bit of exciting play from England all night. Very depressing times :(.

  • It's a shame about Robinson, but what do you expect when you pick a team of old men?

And you guys all think you are better than Scotland? No chance. You'd lose to Georgia.

  • having just got back from Paris, watching this match, it was very sad to see Jason Robinson pull up like that, throughout the night all us england fans pinned our spirits on being lifted slightly whenever he got the ball. Hopefully news of a swiftly return for the 1/4s is true (if we get that far). If not, i am glad that at least i can say that I managed to see the last moments of such a great career first hand...

  • unfortunate to happen to englands best player on the night. that play epitomised englands plight, the ball was (finally) shifted across the backline for the 1st time prompting a hope of creativity but just when he got his hands on the ball he pulls up with injury. Summed up englands chances perfectly. Talk about fall from grace :(

  • God bless him

  • before this happened in the game all i could think was how he could spark an upset, with his 100% pure bravery and commitment when catching every high ball thrown his way and of course his famously threatening runs. obviously as with every other englishman (and rugby supporters in general) i was devestated to see that happen. a true role model and icon. rob b.

  • A great, great player, from his early days at Wigan to this game against the Boks he puts absolutely everything into it, a massive heart and a credit to both codes!

As a Sale and England fan he will be missed, however his career will be reflected upon for many many years!

  • Nice touch by the SA who were closer to the incident not to fly into the ruck, noting that JR was injured, although amusing to see that the England pack decided to start a rolling maul directtly above their stricken full back!

  • There's a second chance for him
