Plays of the Month for June 2009

The month of June was jam-packed with international rugby action as Test matches took centre stage across the globe, with all the major sides either starting, or finishing their rugby seasons.

For the rugby fans, it's been a treat with big games every weekend and plenty to talk about. The good, the bad, the the fugly.

The British & Irish Lions tour has commanded most of the attention, as the Springboks managed to take the series 2-0. Unfortunately the series so far has been marred by some below par refereeing, and a few below the belt incidents. One match left though. Could go either way.

The All Blacks had a case of the blues as the French arrived in New Zealand with cock in hand, surprising them in the first Test. The AB's came back nicely though, to square the series 1-1. They went on to beat Italy, but are looking a little concerned ahead of the Tri Nations.

The Wallabies blew away a star studded Barbarians side in Sydney, then brushed aside the Italians who had an Aussie or two of their own. The French lacked gas in the tank when they travelled to Ausland, but had one of their better tours in recent times. The Wallaby backline are looking like they could be a potent force this season.

All in all it's been really entertaining, but has made it difficult to predict how the upcoming Tri Nations is going to pan out. One thing is for sure though, the month of June won't be forgotten any time soon. Let's hope July provides as much fun and enjoyment for us all.

  • God that call from the ref was crazy... it's a shame the refereeing of the Lions tour has been so poor. The series saw some truly amazing rugby played, wish that was all we had to talk about.

Talking of shame... Burger has just apologised, to the SA team and his fans. Err, think it's Luke Fitzgerald you owe an apology to mate.

Trinh-Duc, for so long only the French coaches seemed to know what he was doing in the national side. Suddenly 6 kiwis and the rest of the world found out. Great stuff from the French, they seem to be the only NH nation that doesn't give up the ghost as the haka starts.

What a player O'Connor is. Here's hoping he stays injury free despite the attention he's bound to be played in the up-coming tri nations. Giteau, Barnes, O'Connor - with Mortlock fit that Aussie backline looks like a f***ing dream.

  • Love those vids, luv 'em

  • That programme looks deadly, there should be more of them here. And I know the SH commentators never know the names of the NH players, but Shane Williams got the World Player of the Year award last year. Surely he's the one player that they should recognise.

  • Good vid. Well put together. Would have liked to see a bit more of the SA rolling maul vs Lions

    - just cos u want to be snapply and brisk in u'r vid doesn't mean you should _always_ shorten a clip.

Small complaint thou - excellent stuff overall

  • Brousseau tackled Shane Williams not Keith Earls

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 03, 2009 4:16 am

  • You lot are jumpig the gun on O'Connor. He looks a bit light weight to say the least....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 03, 2009 4:18 am

  • Pfft, he's 18, he's big for an 18 year old. He's alos a fly-half, Gitaeu's smaller than him, do you think he's a lightweight.
I mean, your obviously a NH supporter, so I gues you wouldn't know that he's been preforming in the S14 for the last two seasons at an amazinf level for a teenager. So no, no one's juming the gun, he;s gonna be awesome. gitaeu mark 2.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 03, 2009 5:18 am

  • there is in no way any jumping of the gun on o'conner.just look at the 21s finl and you think " what f***ing potential". then realise he's 18 and playing senior test rugby. it's amazing to be doing that, and when you take into account that he's so good at it.... well wow, he could be a legend if his personality is all work.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 03, 2009 7:23 am

  • Great video.

What's the name of that French no. 10?

Cedric try was a beauty, but I'd rate this one as the best of the series.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 03, 2009 8:07 am

  • French number 10 is Francois Trinh Duc. Interesting story about him is that he and another Frenchie with a 'different' name, flanker Fulgence Ouedraogo, are childhood friends.

They've apparently known and played rugby with eachother since the age of 6. Pretty awesome, especially if you consider the one is of African heritage and the other is from Vietnamese descent.

    Awesome world we live in.

By Anonymous Shaft, at July 03, 2009 8:21 am

  • who says there jumping the gun on O Connor??

18 and will make bits of anybody!!

and about twice the size of Gitaeu!!

going to be a legend in the future game!! even though most admit his 2 of his 3 trys againt Italy wernt great play by him just luck that he mamnaged to be on the end of a great move!!

    By Anonymous creggsrugby08, at July 03, 2009 9:33 am

  • awesome video

for sure, lions-boks series and france tour vs NZ will stay in memories.
Oz seem also to be in pretty shape.

personal view: french referee's english is a disgrace lol. But when u see british referee's french during h-cup is also amusing

By Anonymous Flooz, at July 03, 2009 10:28 am

  • Ha, if O'Conner's a lightweight now at 18, and he's shrugging off Parisse, I wonder how many tackles he'll break when he's 25.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 03, 2009 11:16 am

  • he caught parisse off balance. he got destroyed by bergamasco and the 3 tries he did score were all thanks to giteau. apart from the last one which was slightly better.

By Anonymous rugbyazzuri, at July 03, 2009 3:04 pm

  • Ha! Loved it, great vid

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 03, 2009 4:02 pm

  • I didn't say O'Connor isn't any good....... but he isn't proven at the highest level.

Before you start calling him Tim Horan......Has he done anyhing against the big boys at test level?
No.....lets wait and see how he does.

A few run in trys against Italy odesn't prove anything. He got smashed by Bergamasco and Nonu did the same thin to him in the Super 14.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 03, 2009 4:15 pm

  • wow!!! what a great clip! thanks guys!

By Anonymous opfazonk, at July 03, 2009 4:43 pm

  • Well Kearney for tests - go back and watch the SA V LIONS 2nd test and hear one of the Brit commentators call Bryan Habanah (also IRB Player of the year at some point)- BOD!!!!! And this happens when he is discussing Habanah's bril try... maybe NH commentators should also learn SH names and vice-versa!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 03, 2009 11:41 pm

  • To the above, or maybe he was hoping it was BOD who scored instead!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 03, 2009 11:44 pm

  • it was shane williams not keith earls

  • admit it RD: u are involved in the video! Its too close to everything that's discussed here and seen on this site...
and if u'r not, u should be

By Anonymous mise, at July 04, 2009 12:55 am

  • It's foxsports, an Aussie tv station.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 04, 2009 8:07 am

  • "he caught parisse off balance. he got destroyed by bergamasco and the 3 tries he did score were all thanks to giteau. apart from the last one which was slightly better."

Yeah a puff of wind blew Parrise over, so it doesn't count. And Bergamasco put one good hit on a fly-half so he's rubbish.
And anyone could have scored those three tries, so I guess anyone should play for Australia, since it was all Gitaeu and it had nothing to do with O'Conner's support play at all. Put an 80 year old, blind, half crippled monkey outside Gitaeu and he'd score a hat trick on his debut. Sure makes perfect sense.
    He's a terible player.

haha, mark my words, O'Conner will be as good as Gitaeu, possibly better.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 04, 2009 9:28 am

  • O'Connor is a different class. Mark my words too, he'll be a LOT better than anything we've seen before.

    By Anonymous Ave88, at July 05, 2009 3:12 am

  • nah he wont.

By Anonymous samitarugby, at July 05, 2009 2:48 pm

  • I cant watch this video. I am from Georgia. where are you from??

By Blogger nijogio, at July 05, 2009 11:20 pm

  • vove le coq

By Anonymous sportif, at July 06, 2009 8:51 pm

  • at 2:36 the commentator says "brussow breaks earls"
haha u idiot its shane williams

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 14, 2009 9:54 pm

  • Yeah it was good support by O'connor but he probs ran less than 10m with the ball in hand for all three of his tries put together. Great potential though. Whats his defence like?

By Anonymous Jonno, at July 28, 2009 12:44 pm

  • Wow, Mise is a strange individual. I dont get it.
