Super 14 Pick of the Week - Rounds 1 & 2

As we head into Round 3 of the Super 14, we look back at the best tries scored in the last two weekend's of rugby with our regular slot here on Rugbydump, the Super 14 Pick of the Week.

While Round 1 didn't have too many to pick from, hence the delayed posting, Round 2 produced a feast of tries as the new application of the laws kicked into full effect as we saw fifty-pointers in both Johannesburg, and just up the road, in Pretoria.

While there's no new laws to speak of, the way in which the refs are now governing certain areas of the game will mean that the attacking side will be favoured, and plenty of running rugby and tries should be scored.

That's not always going to be the case though. As teams get used to the new intepretations they will adapt their game plan accordingly, and those who do will surely optimize their strengths significantly.

Enough rambling though - here's 18 tries from Round 1 & 2. We figure it's a great way to see some of the best tries, jampacked into a few minutes. We'll do this each week if feedback is good, so let us know. Enjoy.

Great skills from each scoring team but it really looks like there is no defences! A significant lack of efficiency ! it seems to me that French top 14 definitly has a higher level !!

While there were undoubtedly some moments of genuine skill there, many of those tries were caused by woeful defence, shocking tackling and forward passes.

That said, at least they came from players being adventurous rather than just hoofing the ball into the air!

angels,hitting the ball at speed now thats rugby and its only been 2 rounds. southern hemp got alot more skill then north well I mean England and Italy sorry france,wales and scotland fans!!!. maybe the poms should take note of how exciting,fast, runing lines, putting your player in a gap(like all good 1st fives shud do) thats rugby. Not this ping pong shit eng vs italy!! I do agree with some that the D's cud be betta but when your hitting good lines its harder to defend aganst. And year im a kiwi!!! jonny shud play with soccar balls and not Martin johnsons!!! And with ENGLAND'S greatest cheerleader stephen jones(rugby writer) your going to win the six nations NOT!!!! and yeh us kiwi's are choker's but at least we dont swallow!!!

Stephen Jones is Welsh (the clue's in the name) so he's hardly going to be England's biggest cheerleader - in fact he, like the rest of the rugby press in England, is very hard on the national side. When they play badly (which at the moment is admittedly a lot of the time) the England team get crucified in the press.

Anyway, back on topic, lots of good tries here. I wish people would stop going on about poor defence in highlights videos, as we've all said before many times, in nearly every try ever scored there's at least one missed tackle. SH defence looks pretty damn good if you actually watch whole matches instead of 5 minute highlights.

Totally agree with you Ted. Problem in NH is people only see highlights of the super 14 games and judge everything by it. If defenses were always the best there would be no tries, and kicking is boring as hell to watch, especially if you actually go to the game. Super 14 is great for running rugby, but there is a fair share of big tackles as well. Its all about quick ball in SH, something England esepcially need to sort out.
Good highlights though. Guildford is playing in a different class at the minute. Really exciting player to watch.

Some good rugger there actually. Aside from the Lions vs Chiefs there was actually some good skill on display.

anyway the defense in the super 14 is immense most of the time. THESE ARE TRIES! AND HIGHLIGHTS! OF COURSE THE DEFENCE WONT BE GOOD IN THE VIDEO AS ITS SHOWING THE ATTACKING TEAMS HIGHLIGHTS.
the s14 is easily easily the best provincial rugby comp. in the world

I looooove the way this S14 season is going. Lots of passing and running and tries.

Better than the short pass-dive-ruck-short pass-dive-ruck-drop goal routine. Or the kick away tatics. This is the way rugby should be. You win WITH possession.

All the bitter NH comments going around are hilarious. I'm sure an NH team could stop these attacks with their superior defence.LOL.

If you took an English club side and put them in the S14 they would fall apart.
They don't have the conditioning and can't play the game at any speed.
It's painful to watch NH rugby, the way they get tackled then take 30 seconds just to set the ruck and clear the ball.
No wonder games end 6-3, they have no idea how to run the ball.

Regarding the poor defense, also remember that some of the people scoring and setting up these tries are some of the best players in the world, the same people who also score plenty against national sides.

@Mugsey, I agree. Another thing that's great is the lack of failscrum-failscrum-failscrum-freekick. The pausing seems to have helped.

And for anyone who wants defense, watch the Crusaders/Sharks match from yesterday. The Sharks went NOWHERE.

I wouldn't say there is poor defence in the SH, just look at how quick the ball was coming out and the beautiful passes. What i just saw was the pinnacle of attacking rugby (tries win matches not tackles)

When a match's score is 72-65 you can't just say that there are some failed tackles, it's that scoring predominates over defendig... I think that in northern hemisphere the way to win is not taking points, and in south making as much as possible.

The first three rounds of the Super 14 have been fantastic. The overall quality of the Rugby is very high. Yes, there have been alot of tries but for those who haven't been watching the games the speed of play has been amazing.

The new interpretations have been a godsend for the game in the South. Fast, skillful and entertaining all round. Hell, I'm a Tahs fan through and through, they lost on the weekend and even though I was disappointed with the result I couldn't help but admire the incredible level of
Rugby on offer.

Nice clip, but I think someone should learn referees of the super 14 forward passes are forbidden in rugby.

The average staium size in the S14 is over 40,000.
The average crowd is roguhly 20,000.
So the stadiums often look ahlf empty.
S14 isn't played in tiny 10,000 seat stadiums like Euro rugby.

That first week was really plagued by penalties due to the new interpretation of the laws that refs are being told to take...but it's good to see that by the third round, they're backing off a little bit. Those first two matches of the season, in particular, were horrendous (penalty-wise).

But whatever, the S14 is still probably the best club rugby competition in the world - that coming from a NH supporter (like that should even matter...).

It'd be great to see try seeking play in england too, with more adventurous play with the ball in hand - the success they have with the inside ball / simple hands is staggering compaired to the guiness premiership.
