Rupeni Caucaunibuca's two tries for Agen against Narbonne
Yesterday it was mentioned on the Rugbydump Facebook page that Rupeni Caucanibuca had scored two tries against Narbonne on the weekend. The overwhelming response was that of intrigue, so here's the tries for you, as promised.
Agen play in ProD2, the second division in French rugby, and are looking like they'll be promoted to the Top 14 next season as they're currently sitting comfortably on top of the table, especially after this 57-12 win over Narbonne.
They scored eight tries in total, two of which were scored by the man widely regarded as one of the most exciting players to have ever graced a rugby field. While Caucau doesn't quite look the same as many of us remember him, he is still only 29, and has serious ambitions of playing in next years World Cup in New Zealand.
"I wish to represent Fiji at the 2011 Rugby World Cup as well," he said recently.
It would be an incredible achievement if he managed it, considering he's been in the rugby wilderness for a while, with doping bans and disciplinary issues not helping his cause.
"Many things has been said about me. Most of them negative but I would like to right the wrong. First and foremost, I thank the Almighty who can reopen the door that was shut on me.
"Anything is possible through God. I thought this chance was lost forever.
Caucau explained that he wants to use the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup as an opportunity to prove that he's still got what it takes to play rugby at the highest level.
"The passion and interest has always been in me to play for Fiji but something always happens and as usual, I get to be the centre of criticism. I want to prove my critics wrong," he added.

What a legend. Great to see this. I didn't even realise he's still playing. Would be amazing to see him at the world cup

Built like a prop but insanely quick! CauCau you'd better be in NZ!

Shed a few and he'll take off.

Hahaha he is so fat!!! still very quick, he could use some hard dieting, or turn that fat into muscle.. i would definately love to see him in the world cup!!

Caucau is back, we love him here in France, next season i would see him in Top 14.
He is fat but so quick.

Would be great to see him back in the Top 14 with Agen next season.

I don't know how much time this bloke spends in the gym or on the training park, but I'd imagine not a lot. It seems to me that all he has to do is have his head screwed on and he's the most dangerous open field runner in the game.
How does a guy get that fat, (someone said he's pushing 130kg's) and still manage to play 80 minutes of rugby?
I reckon he should still look to lose some timber though he's definitely a winger rather than a centre.
By Jack, at April 22, 2010 4:21 pm
To bad he is such a head case. He could have been one of the all time best.
By PickAndJam, at April 22, 2010 4:25 pm
Torn between two emotions here really. Hilarious watching the fatso shift but does no-one else wonder what could have been? If he'd kept himself in shape and got his head in the right place he'd be the greatest player ever to have lived.....
Is there still time for him to get his act together?.... I'm not sure...
By Le Brack, at April 22, 2010 4:28 pm
I hadn't heard of him before and after looking at the photo above the clip couldn't believe how he shifted through the gears in the video!
By Phil, at April 22, 2010 4:34 pm
Love too see he is so good fast and fat!
By Anonymous, at April 22, 2010 4:37 pm
I do not like comparisons with soccer. But Caucaunibuca may be is the
'Majico Gonzalez' of rugby. A San Salvador players in the 80s. It could
He could be one of the best rugby player in the world, but seems rugby is only a game for him.

By Anonymous, at April 22, 2010 5:05 pm
Rugby should only be a game for all of us.^ This guy just isn't cut out for punching the clock at a gym, cold weather, or being away from his culture.
Just let Caucau smoke weed, eat what he wants, and score tries.
If he had played in the amateur period he would have been the best of all time.

Drug cheat? Nonsense. Weed never helped anyone do anything other than relax.
Caucau is a fantastic player - as others have said, if he had the work ethic of even an average pro, he'd walk into any world 15.
By Mike, at April 22, 2010 7:46 pm
Apparently the crowd there enjoy the Caucau show. Look at the attendance for a second division game.

By Les Bleus, at April 22, 2010 9:41 pm
lol I cant imagine what kind of spaz took the time to write DRUGS CHEAT then copy and paste it and still think he's correct and making a statement of some sort.
Seriously, weed certainly does nothing to ENHANCE one's performance. But rules is rules.. but whatever, thats in the past. I just wish this guy would get in shape ffs. Someone grab him by the ear and get him on a tredmill.
Dazzle the world again Caucau. You can do it! :)
By FrankyH, at April 22, 2010 9:51 pm
Caucau could have been THE greatest winger of all time. But it's just a game for him. Amazing story and destiny of a real fijian dreamer, a kind of poet of rugby, with a club from the end of the world in the green french countryside from the top to the depth of second division then to the top again...
When he arrived in France, it was his first year, life seemed so different to what he's used to, and people looked so sad to him, that on Xmas day, he openheart released soft money with every people on Agen streets and wish them a merry Xmas...
Unbelievable but true !
By 4LC4TR4Z, at April 22, 2010 9:58 pm
Jesus, and I thought Bastareaud was fat for a center...
By marks, at April 22, 2010 10:10 pm
haha, that's some shoddy tackling for the first try...
Good to see the fat man in action. But you gotta agree with those above. If you look at the old clips, what he was doing while playing for the blues really makes you wonder what could have been.

Awesome! fat lads can't run? bollocks!
I'll pray that he can play for Fiji in New Zealand. Would be damn awesome
By Juggernauter, at April 22, 2010 10:31 pm
I'd hate to have been that fullback for the 2nd try.
'please don't run over me, please don't run over me!.
The defending may have been poor but that 1st step off his left for his 1st try was beautiful. Few backrows would've stoppped that, let alone a 2nd division French team.
By Huh!! the 3rd, at April 22, 2010 10:42 pm
Just out of interest, does anyone reading this know how CauCau's form has been this year? Obviously Agen are top of the league, but i'd be interested to know if it's due mainly to CauCau, or if he just happened to have a good game that day. Would be great if he was getting back to his best, damn that guy could fly.
By Chris M, at April 22, 2010 10:56 pm

Rumour is on most of the most of the Guinness Premiership boards that if Leeds stay up he will sign for them. Cant say I beleive it myself, think the reason its done the rounds on so many boards is that its so sensational rather then having any truth in it but hey you never know? and a few posters did supply links to sources saying the same thing. Caucau playing outside Rabeni for Leeds? Stranger things have happened.

YOU PEOPLE ARE A DISGRACE IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT HIS MOTIVES WERE.
THIS MAN DELIBERATELY USED A BANNED AND ILLEGAL SUBSTANCE AND SO SHOULD BE IN PRISON, NOT JUST BARRED FROM THE BEAUTIFUL GAME.
IF YOU CAN'T RESPECT THAT THEN MAYBE YOU SHOULD PLAY BASEBALL OR SOME SPORT THAT TURNS A BLIND EYE TO DRUG USE, WHETHER RECREATIONAL OR NOT.

Caucaunibuca, you're already a legend !
By Anonymous, at April 23, 2010 1:21 am
Just check the back line Fiji could be placing in New Zealand 2011:
Rauluni, Little, Bai, Rabeni, Naqelevuki, Caucaunibuca and Ligairi...
Now how's that??
By Joost, at April 23, 2010 1:28 am
Joost how could you not include Napolioni Nalaga on one wing? The Clermont wing has been top try scorer in the Top14 for the last two seasons. With him and Caucau thats two very fast, very powerful wings.
By Greg, at April 23, 2010 1:41 am
anonymous(e) SHOUTING
(Excuse my language RD but)
Snap the fuck out of it.
Weed (and that belly) would slow him down, and players recreational habits are none of my or your business.
If it ain't performance enhancing, and is in fact possibly the opposite, then it isn't relevant to the playing of rugby. So, the law is an ass in this context, and I think, actually about to get even worse in this regard. Screw that.
On Caucau - what an phenomenon. Watched all the clips posted below the clip - amazing.
No, there were no bad tackles - they were all missed by miles. Missed by more than u normally see. Players were not even getting a hand on him. Literally.
Incredible. Get that man a really good sports psychologist, get him to knock off a stone or two, straighten his head out that give it a lash from now til WC 2011.
Ppl who watch Agen: can I ask - does 13 suit him? I'm asking because he is no sooo chubby, surely he could cope in a Bastereau sort of way, possibly better than on the wing?
Thoughts
By mise, at April 23, 2010 1:53 am
Agen has almost the same problem as the Blues at the time (but, hey, not at the same level of course). You remember, Howlett and Rokoçoko on both wings, but Caucau was here too. So Caucau played 13 sometimes (often, if my memories are right).
Agen has many good wingers (lvl Pro D2, like Vaka - fijian too - and young french players with potential like Edmond-Samuel, Huguet, Guitoune), but relatively few centers. D. Du Plessis played 13 regularly, he's injured, so Caucau is 13 for now. With Junior Pelesasa (12, ex-WForce) and Barnard, they have a great back line.
If Agen climbs into top 14 (almost over), the team will change, new players will come, we'll see if Caucau will remain in 13 or the wing.
Keep an eye on Opeti Fonua too, the number 8 which made the pass on the first try, a very talented young Tongan formed in Agen

My bad Greg... totally forgot about Nalaga. Guess good old Norman Ligairi goes to the bench! I hope Naqelevuki or Caucau can play at full back
By Joost, at April 23, 2010 2:39 am
What a waste of talent.
Could have been the best winger in the world for the last decade.
Chose to smoke pot and get fat.
Damn shame.
By Anonymous, at April 23, 2010 4:38 am

By Cheis, at April 23, 2010 5:10 am
The guy will never get picked in his current shape, imagine if he actually had some work ethic to go with the obviously massive natural talent.
Fiji is blessed with some of the best wingers in the world why would a coach waste time with someone who is more interested in eating that training?

What has CauCau actually done? Scored two good tries against Scotland and France in the 2003 world cup. 7 years ago, move on people. He hasn't done anything since besides score some tries against low end French clubs. CauCau is the most overrated player in rugby. Look at him, he's a fat pig.
By Anonymous, at April 23, 2010 5:48 am
I must admit lack of Guinness Premiership highlights disgraceful.
By Anonymous, at April 23, 2010 5:56 am
Caucau was awesome in his day, as close to unstoppable as a winger can be (opnly Lomu was more dangerous imo).
You say he only scored against France and Sctoland (amazing tries) but you';re ignoring the fact that he was easily the best winger in S14 for three years before that.
Better than any of his contemporaries, and that includes guys like Rockococo, Tuqiri and Howlett.
And he threw it all away, first by chasing the money in France, then by disappearing to Fiji regularly to smoke pot and then by lettign himself go physically.
It's a shame.
By Anonymous, at April 23, 2010 6:23 am
Lol, he is rather portly....
but yes i agree, if he sheds a few pounds he'll be even quicker (perhaps)
I wouldnt stick him on the wing as such...he is too powerful for that, and he has good hands...nowadays wings tend to get very little room and nimbleness is the key...ofcourse this guy is nimble...but its all relative...
Habana=manouverable like a smart car
Caucaunibuca=manouverable like a juggernaught hauling a wide and long load....
And yeh, honestly you can hardly call him a cheat as such. Marijuana is illegal in the sport, but honestly...its hardly a f'ing motivating drug is it!
I mean, who smokes a doob and says, 'YEAH I feel great, im gonna go to the gym, rape the weights, run a 100km, and then play a game of rugby...' exactly..no one, you just end up like towelie! 'Oh man im so high, i've got no idea whats going on...'

For Joost and Craig ..check this Guy Ratuvou he plays # 15 for Fiji playing for Saracen ...Isa Nacewa plays # 15 also..But Caucau yeah I can say indid a great winger Fiji as the outside and the inside backs already.
By Anonymous, at April 23, 2010 7:00 am
Hope he does make it into the 2011 Fiji Team...he needs to work really hard to win a spot,He indid is a great winger ,,, him playing 13 50/50 ...but on the wing might get a place..just to say Delasau,Nagala,Nagusa,Naqelevuki and list goes on ...# 15Ratuvou,Rawaqa,Isa Nacewa,Ligairi and the list goes on ...for the inside centers and outside Little,Bai,Rabeni..Might see Naqelevuki on 13 also..So just hope and pray Caucau gets to PLAY rugby again in NZ 2011!
By ilexvunibola_fj, at April 23, 2010 7:21 am
Have watched all the vids from the links below this one - the guy is/was simply unbelievable! Just makes it look so easy, very nonchalant. A return to form would be brilliant for rugby fans everywhere.

I don't know what kind of backwards country you live in but marijuanna use doesn't result in anybody going to prison in France. Or England. Or most the world.

that clip wasnt so great.questionable tackling, - and a fatter slower version of former Cau-Cau.
watch his try against france 2003 world cup.
breath taking, noone else in rugby could have done that, probably not even Lomu had that acceleration to get round Rougerie!

I would suggest that if you do not recognise his ability, that reflects more on you as a spectator. In terms of natural ability, I would put him on a par with someone like BOD, except that BOD has a good work ethic (although not perfect, also enjoying a smoke and a drink certainly a few years back). But while BOD has won the European Cupm toured with the Lions 3 times and scored 40 odd international tries, Caucau never gave his talent a chance. And in spite of this, he has still done brilliant things in the game. Remember the game for Agen in the HEC where he slapped the ball from BOD just as he was touching it down? He's not just a try-scorer.
An all-time great talent, I only wish he had the mindset to become an all-time great player.

.........................................
LMAO!! What has he done? where were you during the 2002-2003 S12? and being the top try scorer in the T14 2 yrs in a row accounts for nothing. Not to mention he joined this "low level" division half way through last season and still managed to be the top try scorer.lol..I wouldn't dismiss the French Pro D2, the likes of Gregan, Matfield, Umaga etc all played in this division not too long ago.
Love or hate him he's the best winger I've seen since Lomu. I only hoped he'd played for the ABs, we would've managed him a lot better then the Fijians.
By Anonymous, at April 23, 2010 9:31 pm
^ Wings aren't only about attacking, Habana puts him to shame. How often do you see CauCau make try saving tackles, like Habana does so often? Just last night Habana held up Genia to give his team a crucial losing bonus point to keep them at 1st/2nd spot on the table. How often do you see Habana on the other side of the field making those crucial tackles? Like the one he did to big chin Lachie Turner in Perth last year, watch it on youtube, big boy.
Habana, 41 tries in Super rugby and still going, 37+ test tries, and a record equaling 8 tries at the World Cup.
I'll admit Caucau had some promise but it's come to nothing, he turned out to be nothing special, get over it.
Once again, all I see is people mentioning his tries against Scotland and France in the 03 world cup, well done. Seven years ago, wow.
By Els, at April 24, 2010 1:53 am
Els, everyone is saying that he could have been the best, but he didn't get there beause he wasted his talent.
In terms of natural talent he was even better than Habana. No one had the agility, speed and strength he was born with. He could beat defences with ease.
Habana is a great player who has acheived more than Caucau ever will but Caucau could have been better, if he'd just pulled his head out of his arse.
By Anonymous, at April 24, 2010 5:20 am
@ above
mate you cant say that for sure you cant look into the future. caucau has accomplished what he could. he wasnt mentally strong enough and THAT is his actual talent. im a fijian and have more respect for guys like sivivatu than i do for caucau.
By Anonymous, at April 24, 2010 5:51 am
Habana is good, but most these so called top wingers were/are playing behind a dominant pack (SANZAR) and world class fly-half/midfielders. Without this set up they're more or less non-existent on the field. This dude single handedly almost took Fiji to the 2003 RWC QFs.Whatever team he plays for good/bad he still tears up defences... its a shame he has a shit atitude.
I've seen top backs from NZ, SAF and Aust come up north, and imo, 90% really do not do much. Rico Gear was highly rated down South, he's struggled to get on the score sheet. So you can knock this dude all you want, at the end of the day he's got something special.
I've just been through Youtube, no other winger apart from Lomu has more views and vid postings then this guy. Why is that?

Rups will be playing in a far better backline then the 2003 RWC squad he had to carry.

Look at the size of him! lol, Get down to 100 kgs, get the work rate up and he'll be sorted. The trick is to get a guy like this involved in the game play a bit more.
I'm glad he's still playing though. This is guy is one of the most inspiring players I've ever seen. His running is just sublime. Fast, confident, relaxed... Perfect.
By Anonymous, at April 26, 2010 3:34 pm
Caucau will be playing at centre for Fiji against Australia in Canberra this Saturday. As confirmed by Caucau himself while interviewed on Fiji TV earlier this week, he has shed 10 kg in the last week preparing himself for the test against Australia. The Fiji coach was mentioning last week that the fitness experts are working on trimming Caucau further before the start of the PNC against Samoa and Tonga in the next few weeks. So Caucau is definitely on his way back to the top. Mark my word, Caucau will be in the Fiji team in next year's world cup in New Zealand.
By lemekid, at June 03, 2010 11:15 am
could'nt care less what you dopes think but Caucau was an absolute legend in his primw. A real shame that he had some issues which caused a lot of problems at the blues but he came back froma badly broken leg and still sets the crowd alight with his light footwork. The Blues missed him when he left....I missed him in the 97 WC.....he would of made a difference
By Anonymous, at June 19, 2010 3:29 am
think ive said it before. the day this guy retires only then can someone claim to be better. his still by far the most exciting thing since lomu.
