ITM Cup in New Zealand - Highlights from Round 6
It's time for another extended wrap-up from the ITM Cup, with a 20 minute package showing every try that was scored in Round 6, including the much talked about Sonny Bill Williams debut.
Round 7 has already started, so this will just be a quick wrap-up of the results, as well as the highlights for you to take a look at, starting with Counties Manukau as they beat Tasman 23-3 in Pukekohe.
The Sonny Bill Williams show then came to town as Canterbury beat Bay Of Plenty 28-9, with Williams making a solid, if unspectacular, debut off the bench. He showed touches of class at times though, and will start for Canterbury this weekend.
Manawatu sprung the upset of the weekend as they beat the Wellington Lions 36-24, while Southland's winning streak came to an end with a 33-22 loss to Northland. Rene Ranger and Jared Payne combined twice for two excellent tries.
Waikato continued to impress as they beat North Harbour 36-27 in an action packed game in Albany, while at Eden Park Auckland picked up a hard-fought 27-13 win over Taranaki. Finally, on Sunday at Carisbrook Otaga got their first win of the season as they beat Hawkes Bay 17-16.
The video quality isn't perfect but if you enjoy these type of ITM Cup wrap up's, please let me know and they'll continue to be posted each week. Cheers

Thanks, troll, on your way now please.
SBW looks good. And Sherwin Stowers looks like yet another nz wing with serious potential

Can anyone tell me which of these teams play in the Super 15 ? And which is which ?
Thanks

This is the Professional league in NZ, Super 15 is the provincial league across NZ, RSA and Australia so none of these team play in this league.
21 minutes of highlights....my god.

Well, it's not really that clean cut is it, Bradders? I mean, a lot of these teams have at least one player seeded to Super 15 teams.
To B, maybe this will clear things up (or make them more confusing)...

RD, I know it'd be extra work, but is there any chance of a 5 minute highlight alternative video when they're this long? Keep up the good work.
By Phil, at September 09, 2010 8:22 pm
@ B, the core of these teams do play in the Super 14/15, but are made up from other sides. eg: Canterbury will form the nucleus of the Crusaders side, Auckland of the Blues, etc. It's actually quite well explained on that wiki link that Rams posted.
@ Phil, I hear ya, but also thought that one might be handy for some. It would be more work and not much could be squeezed into 5 mins, but as always, happy to listen to the feedback and act based on that in the future. In theory you could always skip around to matches you'd like to see highlights of too.

Six Of One, A Half Dozen Of The Other.
What does it matter? You will typically watch 5 or 6 x 4 Minute clips, perhaps more after a busy weekend.
Otherwise, Keep up the good work RD.
Cheers.

I don't really understand the thinking behind "these highlights are great but less of them would be better". For me, lots of good rugby is barely enough. Thanks RD.
By Ferdinand, at September 10, 2010 1:00 am
I love the longer highlights RD, keep it up.
By Bill, at September 10, 2010 1:11 am
Sooo many highlights... Such rugby overdose... But it feels... Good? ME WANT MORE!!!!!
Keep up the good work, RD
By Xavier, at September 10, 2010 1:36 am
Thanks RD I'm loving the highlights
I watched SBW play, I thought he had a pretty solid game, nothing spectacular, I'm sure that with each passing game he'll undoubtedly start to find his feet and show his real skill set.
Sad to see the Stags drop a game, but i'm sure it will only serve to fire them up for tonights Ranfurly Shield match agaisnt North Harbour.
I love the shield, its so great when the smaller unions get it. These places really get behind their team and come out to support each game. Well if southland have to lose it I hope it is to another smaller union and not the likes of Cant or Auck

There are just two bad things in this mind-blowing competition:
1) The poor attendance. Come on guys, you've got the best rugby in the world there in New Zealand! Go and watch it! Fill the stadiums!
2) Masaga's dancing and shaved legs. Go play some football you sissy.
Cheers!
By Juggernauter, at September 10, 2010 4:57 am
@Juggernauter I'm pretty sure alot of rugga boys shave their legs... But something tells me you wouldn't call them a sissy to their face...
And why shouldn't Masaga dance? It's funny as, I love how cheeky he is, don't be a kill-joy blubbernauter!
By Anonymous, at September 10, 2010 5:16 am
@Juggernauter You really are a kill joy.. it's called having your own character.. there are different personalities in Rugby for a reason.. some are humble, some are cocky, some are inspirational, some are annoying, it would be boring if they were all the same.. lol
By Anonymous, at September 10, 2010 5:54 am
Juggernator, there's too much rugby in NZ, it's only a small place, about 4.5 million or so people and they have a ridiculous amount of rugby to go see.
So the attendances in this comp aren't all that great, except at big games.
Truth is though, the average attendance is about 7 or 8 thousand per game, which is actually about the same as the Magners League for example.
They just play in large stadiums so it looks like no one is there.
By Tommy, at September 10, 2010 6:30 am
B,
northland, north harbour auckland make up the blues
counties manakau, waikato, bay of plenty make up the chiefs
hawkes bay, manuwatu, taranaki, wellington make up the hurricanes
tasman and canterbury make up the crusaders
otago and southland make up the highlanders
By Anonymous, at September 10, 2010 6:56 am
I actually thought the attendance was pretty good. Take the Hawkes Bay v. Otago game. They are the two bottom placed sides yet it looked like carisbrook was about half full. Carisbrook is bigger than alot of the rugby parks in the NH so it's a pretty good turn out. The only ones that actually looked bad were Eden Park and AMI. Eden Park is under construction so it is not that attractive atm. AMI I'm not too sure about but they were only playing the Bay...

I'm pretty sure it's only NZ children and the Aussies over at the Rugby Club that enjoy Masaga's "I scored a try but my mama never taught me how to be a good sport" pansy dances.
By Carl Carlton, at September 10, 2010 12:14 pm
Great! Can we get something similar for the Currie Cup?
By Donovan, at September 10, 2010 12:43 pm
hey RD, please post more vids like this ..
long and pack with quality tries...
cool....
By Anonymous, at September 10, 2010 5:28 pm
Yeah, the fact about the stadiums being too big makes sense...
And anons, if we are going to start a debate here please have the manhhod to get a name.
I think teh best way to celebrate a try is clapping hands with your team mates, pointing at the public, shouting, hugging a forward or the man that gave you the pass... If rugby has a great ethos taht is miles away from every other soport, it's because of respect. for the opposition and your mates. You don't do things like that.
By Juggernauter, at September 10, 2010 5:38 pm
What I don't get about you guys moaning about the celebrations is, do YOU take it personally or get insulted when an opposition player dances a little after scoring a try?!?
If you in fact do, that's pretty sad and pathetic, imo. :)
He's scored a try, let him celebrate how he pleases. Quit trying to be better than every other sport with this 'this isnt soccer' bullshit and focus on what's important - scoring tries yourself, so you can celebrate however you choose to.
By Flinto, at September 10, 2010 5:51 pm
Except that rugby is better than soccer, Flinto - at least when it comes to the fact that most rugby players know what it means to be a good sport. The ability to be "humble" about scoring a try is just one of the many ways rugby is better than soccer. It's not "bullshit", it's just a fact. Another fact? Masaga is a cunt. It's not that his dancing should be taken as a personal offense to the spectator, but by being a "show-off", Masaga deserves any sort of punishment the opposing team wants to throw his way.
By Fred, at September 10, 2010 9:05 pm
Flinto, I remember years ago, playing in the Super 14 (I think it was against the Highlanders), Piri Weepu scored a try and he started dancing in the opposition's in goal. A Highlanders second row pushed him angrily and threw him on the floor. Weepu got up and ran back to his own half. No player complaint to the Highlander player.
That's got to say something, huh?
By Juggernauter, at September 10, 2010 9:35 pm
If dancing is not illegal.. then why are you complaining faggot
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2010 7:15 am
Love it mate!
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2010 3:34 pm
Can't have too much of the highlights. Keep it coming, RD. ITM cup seems great this year. Teams from outside the big 5 are playing some great running rugby. Its a shame that it's got to be cut up again next season. Separating out the top sides in their own little league will only draw the top players from 'lesser' sides to the big unions. Provincial rugby will just become like a mirror of Super14. Not a good thing. The diversity and national interest in the current setup is priceless, in my opinion.
By Anonymous, at September 11, 2010 6:14 pm
Thanks everyone . Hehehe . Now i know which team is which .
