Super Rugby Pick of the Week - Round 5
This coming weekend of Super Rugby is a historical one, as we'll watch the first ever game played outside of the Tri Nations countries, on Sunday. For now we'll have a quick look back at some of the best tries from the last round.
Possibly the biggest story of round 5 was the massive upset that the Waratahs suffered at the hands of the Cheetahs, a side that had never won in Australia in the history of the tournament. They fronted up, played percentages, and dominated the breakdown. A few cameos off the bench didn't hurt them either.
If offloading in the tackle was the main feature of previous week's best tries, this round could probably be slapped with the theme of speed, as we saw some tries scored at tremendous pace. That's not necessarily one-on-one pace, but the way that the ball is shifted through the hands to counter attack, or score off first phase possession even.
Rene Ranger was the recipient and supplier of two of the Blues tries against the Hurricanes as he showed his gas and offloading ability too. Sonny Bill Williams, as we've come to expect, did the same for the Crusaders against the Highlanders.
In the South African derby of the weekend, Bjorn Basson of the Bulls and Bryan Habana of the Stormers had a great tussle as Basson got the better of the Springbok for the first try, then Habana came back well with a typically hungry try.
As mentioned earlier, this weekend at Twickenham will be the first ever Super Rugby game held outside of Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. It's the Crusaders 'hosting' the Sharks and most of the proceeds will go to the Earthquake Disaster relief fund.
If you're nearby, check out Rfu.com for more info and to find out how to get tickets. It's a great cause, should be a fantastic match, and you'll get to see top All Blacks and Springboks in action.

HAHAHA you stupid little douchers! I got it hahahahahahahaha. My life is now better than all of yours hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
By ResidentTroll, at March 25, 2011 1:15 am
And now back to the rugby...
By Not a child., at March 25, 2011 1:19 am
Great tries. Good to watch. Rene Ranger is lethal!
By Laz, at March 25, 2011 1:58 am
I know it's been spoken about a lot, but seriously who do NZ start as centers? Freuan and Williams in great form, Nonu making some mistakes but we all know how dangerous he is. And then there's Smith who is just pure class.
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 2:31 am
Some of the offloading and pace is ridiculous...
By RedYeti, at March 25, 2011 3:26 am
Good tries, great winger tries in there.
And the Waratahs... jesus
By Jono, at March 25, 2011 4:32 am
Yes, but I couldn't help but laugh at Nonu's offload.
By Krang, at March 25, 2011 4:35 am
Nonu has always been prone to the odd knock on.
He makes up for it by breaking loads of tackles every game though.
By Jono, at March 25, 2011 5:06 am
That's the thing with Nonu, his ability to punch through defence is just that valuable. Before Sonny Bill Williams there wasn't really other candidates since there's Smith to complement him.
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 5:16 am
Stop talking about NZ, piss off.
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 5:45 am
Ranger is a beast!
By Tyson, at March 25, 2011 6:48 am
I could go on about the defense but the reality is our six nation teams run side ways so its more easyer to defend. SBW,Nonu,Ranger,Fruen and Hosea Gear so many big crash ball runners. NZ is blessed if only we had them in our England team we would have beaten Ireland instead we got Hape :( great vid not sure about the music
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 8:03 am
Wow just the speed and power of super 15 is amazing!!
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 8:06 am
Anyone who lives anywhere near London would be silly to not go to that game if they have the means to do so.
By eleven, at March 25, 2011 8:33 am
Miles forward from Ranger at the end there. And he needs a haircut.
Some quality tries here though. Really is a treat to watch.
By Von, at March 25, 2011 8:47 am
Dan Carter, Richie McCaw, Sonny Bill (Williams), Israel Dagg...
im going to Twickers !!!
go crusaders !!!
good bunch of tries !!!
By Luxi, at March 25, 2011 10:12 am
Good effort by Beale for to track back 80m's after making a tackle to stop the Cheetahs player from scoring under the posts!
They should have played the Saders Sharks game in Scotland!
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 10:34 am
Awwwesome hands and defence by Habanana hahaha
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 11:17 am
Great vid. Ranger and Williams are looking lethal. And that Harris try for the Reds was pure class. The way he shifted the ball for the hand-offs was brilliant. Also good to see that Habana has discovered his turbo again.
By katman, at March 25, 2011 11:38 am
Awesome !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 11:47 am
Fail for Habana at 1:14
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 12:40 pm
all blacks are blessed.
I would go with SBW/Freuan starting with nonu as an impact sub.
I really wish my dissertation wasn't in so soon or I would have got a ticket to the twickenham game! would have loved to see some super rugby live!
By Russell, at March 25, 2011 1:41 pm
sniff of a forward pass for the last try.....
great bit of footage.....
By Ronan, at March 25, 2011 3:24 pm
Is tackling not encouraged down there? or defence in general...
By Richard the Lionheart, at March 25, 2011 3:36 pm
It's a tries video muppet. They generally get scored when tackles are missed or players are beaten.
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 4:02 pm
'Is tackling not encouraged down there? or defence in general...'
the fact is in the SH the skill level, power, pace is superior to our sup here in the north. like in NZ i think there younger agegroups arnt agegroups there weight classes i think... so thats basically why there skills levels are higher as they dont just use physicality. i mean watch u10's rugby in the NH and its the big fat kid running through the middle.
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 4:30 pm
i'd probably have sonny bill and fruean starting, just because they know each other's game so well.i'd def have smith on the bench though,he's a great player to have to bring on
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 5:17 pm
I'm with Richard....shocking defence.
Can't wait til those cocky kiwis bottle it again in the world cup...
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 5:44 pm
you shouldn't call people muppets...its not nice
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 5:45 pm
Yet another week with more SBW offloads.
I don't access to entire matches, but how good is his all around game, defence etc?
I know there was a lot of fanfare around his return to SH rugby and his boxing match, but I do not seem to hear as many "Ooohs" and "Aaaahs" around him.
Is he every bit as good as the hype? Has he lived up to it?
I think this was the first player in recent memory I can think of who was as per rumours "seduced by AB selectors".
Could someone give me the scoop? Cheers.
By EARugbyFan, at March 25, 2011 6:00 pm
What about the muppets?
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 6:03 pm
Oh my gosh I can only dream of watching this type of rugby in Europe.
Those teams all have big fast buggers playing but id be terrified marking up to some of those Kiwi boys. Fruean 110kg, SBW 108kg, Nonu 104kg, Ranger 102kg , Hosea Gear 104kg, Savea 104kg. They have some very big, very fast, very damaging back line players the Kiwis.
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 7:20 pm
These All blacks are terrifying this year, massive challenge for all the nations to over come them. Im afraid I see a world cup slaughter coming up in the New Zealanders favour.
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 7:22 pm
Have to agree, its going to be a wave of black death at the world cup, has one team ever had so much deph ? Id love England to have this type of player qaulity ti select from .
On top of all the talent - I see they just uneartherd the new Richie McCaw MKII also in that kidd Todd from Canterbury. It really is embarrassing their depth.
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 7:25 pm
I love NH people saying 'we'll give the SH a lesson when they get up here'. Makes me piss myself.. if you read a few stats and percentages you'll realize SH dick NH 7 or 8/10.
P.s. I'm from NH.
By gf, at March 25, 2011 7:38 pm
Those 3 anon comments above are all from the same person. Can't wait to see the kiwis choke in their own country.
By Tbaggage, at March 25, 2011 10:07 pm
How many trolls can we get on one thread?
Talking about Rugby, I'm a huge fan of running rugby but have the impression that there's more leniency regarding possible forward passes, it certainly leads to players risking the off load more..and less scrums of course.
Is this just my impression or do any of you guys agree...the rugby fans, not the trolls.

Ouch still not sold out the Crusaders game?
Even the old EDF Cup sold out Twickers lol
By Anonymous, at March 25, 2011 11:38 pm
To be honest, it doesn't matter for sh*t who NZ play at centre, Williams, Nonu, Smith or Fruen, no matter the combo, will tear the opposition to shreds!!!
By Alexander, at March 25, 2011 11:46 pm
The Twickers game has been capped at something like 55K due to public transport issues so in effect it will be impossible to sell out all 80K seats. Still 55K fans paying more for a ticket than we would in NZ should make a fair bit of dosh for the people of canterbury and keep the local rugby union afloat.
By Max, at March 25, 2011 11:53 pm
Good stuffs RD as usual :) Will be looking forward to the highlights for this weekends game.
Damn, Hurricanes, what the f@ck were you guys doing?
By Jeremy, at March 26, 2011 6:37 am
Habana, brilliant !
By Anonymous, at March 26, 2011 10:51 am
Max: yeah but the 55k allocation stil hasn't sold out either, even with cheap tickets.
I guess all the Kiwi/Saffa barmen are scraping the bottom of their tip jars.

.....
Please see the premiership this weekend, Ben Youngs 2 pass 65 metre try wasn't exactly Bath giving a defensive masterclass. So stop stirring or attempting (and failing) to be a smart arse.
Stoked for tomorrow, should be an awesome match.

'Ouch still not sold out the Crusaders game?
Even the old EDF Cup sold out Twickers lo'
LV cup didn't sell out Franklins Gardens, in fact the attendence for the Crusaders game is already 6x the cup final.
Also, don't call it Twickers, you sound like the sort posh tool who also calls HQ.
By Anonymous, at March 26, 2011 8:15 pm
"LV cup didn't sell out Franklins Gardens"
You dumb fuck, that's not the same competition.
The LV is a development tournament, the EDF was a full blown Anglo Welsh competition.
By Anonymous, at March 27, 2011 1:46 pm
They've only just about filled one tier of the stadium. Pretty disappointing.
By Anonymous, at March 27, 2011 5:04 pm
Correction: The one tier is not even full. I don't think the marketing department are going to be very happy.
