Will Genia try and Digby Ioane breakdance & interview

The Queensland Reds won a Super Rugby title for the first time in the professional era as they beat the Crusaders 18-13 in a fascinating match at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium earlier today.

The Reds were underdogs in many ways but showed their worth as a ferocious forward and defensive effort stopped the might of the Crusaders, who were hoping to take their eighth ever title, and first since 2008.

With scores tied at 13-13, Will Genia broke the match open late in the second half as he split the Crusaders defense and sprinted down field to score a memorable try. The inside run by Quade Cooper kept the tacklers guessing, so Genia just kept going.

"He didn't need me in the end and I was just there to congratulate him so what a fitting end to be right there by him when he scored the match-winning try,'' Cooper said.

"It pretty much sealed the game from there.''

Wing Digby Ioane had earlier scored a nice try of his own, and promised his fans a big celebration should they win the match. He did so with a full breakdance routine after the match, and brought out the famous turtle for good measure. A short clip of that can be seen in the interview that's included below.

Um Suncorp Stadium only holds 52,000. yes it wasn't as big as the Heineken Cup Final and nor should it be. The Southern Hemisphere trination countries are separated by these things called oceans. A tad difficult to get everyone to Jo'Burg, Auckland or Sydney to take advantage of stadiums that can take 100,000 people. It was a great match and both teams put in 110%. Lets not sully that fantastic effort by comparing a SH provincial Rugby tournament with the advertising colossus that is the Heineken Cup. And wow we can't compare to NH rugby ooh. you tell us to go back to our colouring books? Grow up child.

To be fair to the Reds, tickets sold out for there 52k stadium in 40 minutes. So in my mind no doubt they would have filled the stadium, I was at a local pub, and the place was packed with people who missed out on tickets. To address the "half the score" comment. I think this just proves that the defence from both teams was astounding. It's also like saying the Lions and Chiefs game where the score was like 72-65 last year, that the Lions and the Chiefs must have been the two best teams in the competition. The scores of games mean nothing. Not meaning to take anything away from that HC match, because it was an excellent game. But I have no doubt whatsoever in my mind that both the Crusaders and Reds and Stormers for that matter could comprehensively defeat any NH team.

Plus, nice to see all the bandwagon supporters in brisbane, I lived there for 3 years and attended many reds games, don't think I ever saw more than 5,000 at a game - in fact some old school fans I was chatting to at a game insisted it was better when they played at Ballymore because it at least felt like there was a crowd there. Typical Aus though, don't support your team when they're shit but paint the effing town red (literally) when they are doing well.

Good job Reds, though. They deserved the win and for a while they looked like they maybe didn't have the heart to pull themselves through the 80, but they did (despite some of Lawrence's calls). Definitely edge-of-the-seat stuff there for the last few minutes.

To be fair, though, I'm not sure which is more godawful...Ioane's dancing or SBW's "Handiman" hands every time he scores.

But whatever, I watch these games for the rugby itself, something this match was full of. Great stuff.

(One last note, regarding the post-match interviews, I thought Brad Thorn's was a pretty classy one. Seems like a standout guy...Tom Waits' voice and all.)

Awful refereeing, three officials on the pitch and yet heaps of missed infringements in rucks, offsides, knock-ons, forward passes, high tackles..
If the referee had blown the whistle each time he was supposed to, the final would surely not have been as nice to watch.

Half the teams in the six nations have never actually beaten the All Blacks in an international, ever.

The best of the All Blacks played last night and lost and you think that any team in the NH would compete, let alone beat one of the teams playing last night?

NH Trolls at it again. Nah you are right though...Our standard of rugby is SO bad that the combined team of Eng, Ire, Sco and Wales have managed to win a total of 2 tests against southern hemisphere nations since 1999. We have been so terrible over the years we managed to let you win 1 of the 6 world cups played. The All Blacks just dont cut it anymore, I mean when was the last time they ever won a grand slam? And to top it all off, the NH just has the great abundance of players, that they show no interest in signing half the players from NZ RSA and Aus rugby union and league. I mean your rugby is THAT good that absolutely no competitive team would want to sign a 31 year old ex league prop at centre. And yep to top it all off, in the history of all matches played between The all blacks and Eng, The lions, France, wales, scotland and ireland, the NH nations have managed a truly incredible 28 victorys, compared to the ABs lowly 166.

All these years i was mistaken. Looks like we are clearly second best.

Someone's just being a cunt. I'm a Leinster fan, have grown up and played all my rugby in the NH and have never met one single fan or player that shares the views of these idiot trolls that come on here cos they're too young to drink, too ugly to have sex, or too untalented to actually play the game themselves.

I would say that the Munster team about 3 yrs ago might have traded punches with a SH team, but have to recognise that they are a SH influenced team.
Irish schools do transfers with NZ schools for our youth program, for our benefit not theirs. Fielding and kicking skills from our Gaelic coaches is all we bring to the table there.
I have a hard time imagining Leinster or Northampton keeping these guys at bay. Would love to see a champions cup between the S15 and HC winners, would be a great spectacle!

Let's set one thing straight: the level of rugby during the final was excellent! The match was extremely enjoyable, was a real gladiator fight (scoreless until the 30th minute). It's just that the refereeing that was terrible. I don't want to criticize this particular referee or this particular championship. But you have to admit that with proper refereeing, this particular game would have had a lot less intensity (more whistle blowing means more pauses, more stops ...).

I'm English, and no one I know thinks like that jerk does. Anyone who whinges about it being a low scoring game is just too hard to please. A real dogfight, trench warfare stuff with big defence and grit. It took 3 moments of absolute brilliance to produce 3 quality tries. Both teams had a positive mindset, and the game was a bit scrappy at times, but for the most part a fantastic spectacle. Loved every minute of it.

The officials were terrible, but i think their mindset was on the right track. The man in the middle didnt try to make the game about himself or blow the shit out of the whistle to ruin the spectacle. With an attitude like this rugby can continue to produce matches where we talk about the players afterwards, not the referees.

It's as good an accomplishment as Australian Rugby has ever achieved.

Sometimes I wonder if you Brits are living in your own world. It was only last year that Rugby in Australia was significantly below AFL and League, below soccer, and arguably not doing much better than basketball!

What the Reds have done for Australian rugby this year cannot be over-stated.

I would think Leinster would have done a lot of damage at the break down and caused a lot of trouble counter rucking against either the reds or crusaders and certainly could have contested attack wise.

There can be no doubt that super rugby is a far better spectacle than the aviva premiership or magners league. The french top 14 can be quite exciting though..

I would have liked to see the crusaders sharks game in twickenham this year refed by a NH ref...

I think a lot of people have the wrong idea about both NH and SH rugby...

Take super rugby for example... it is in some ways on par with NFL, it is backed by sponsors, its all about franchises... Take any british irish or french team for example.... we have Leinster, bath, tolouse etc etc etc (ten points if anyone can tell me where those teams are based)

Then in Superrugby we have the hurricanes, the stormers, the cheetahs etc etc etc, those are not "local teams" in the same sense of the word... they are franchise teams....

I mean no disrespect in my comment, i merely mean teams like bath, leinster etc all have deep roots, much more deep than the more recent SH club teams....so would it not be more natural to acknowledge the fact that as a franchise born competition the amount of money and media and hype and advertising and just general craze would follow similar suit to say NFL whereas up north they will have less of a great advertising campaign not followed on by the cheesey rugby talk shows we have for the super rugby....

In terms of quality of rugby.... well... from the cup final up north i'd say leinster looked like they'd give the reds a good run for their money, maybe not beat them but really im not sure, i'd put it down to how players feel on the day....

i would put my life savings on a full strength leicester tigers side beating either one of those two teams easily. they could beat any international side the north has to offer,
having said that so could northampton, leinster, or toulouse.
any of those 4 teams would beat either of the teams in the s15 final,
agree that at the moment that at international level the south is top hands down, but at club level the north is better, and you cant say its a slugfest and a forwards game in the north, not anymore, there were more tries per game in the prem this year than in the s15, apart from sarecens, but thats just a london based south african franchise.

Right so we have the Queensland Reds.... great... there is a team with a little history.... lets take now the Melbourne Rebels, i'll take a stab in the dark and say perhaps they're from melbourne.... i'll consult the great wikipedia and hooray, we have a winner, and when was it founded? 2010.... a lot of tradition poured into that one im sure...

Now ofcourse I am being flippant however you obviously missed my point and took offence which actually reflects your intellect you moron.

My point was not to put down super rugby yet explain the fact that it is a "franchise based" competition... hence why the hype around it is so much greater than a lot of NH competitions.... i.e its a competition founded on marketing and money making (whilst ofcourse being on the base of rugby) and therefore if you do not "throw" your team colours out there with a bit of advertising you may infact lose out on money... take Stade Francais for example.... a lot of that team from what i gather is about appearance, showing something different and "entertaining" (scantily clad big boobed women etc) which is in similar fashion to the Super rugby style of appealing to everyone and not just rugby fans....

If you throw two dozen cheerleaders out there, all of a sudden a group of guys having a "lads weekend" might decide "we dont know much about rugby but there is a huge hype and cheerleaders so instead of having a bbq during the day we'll go watch the game" and there you go 10-15 guys buy a ticket and you make money...

In the NH a group of people who know nothing about rugby wont go to a rugby match because there is nothing there BUT rugby...

Anyway if you must know I was actually born in the SH my roots lie in the SH (thanks to a relative taking an involuntary trip to Australia) and I love the Super Rugby, however im not an oblivious prick to the rest of the rugby world and my eyes are not tinted by my teams colours!

I didn't take any offence, just pointing out some facts.
Some of what you said made sense, some didn't.
If you look at the 15 teams, some have long histories and alot of tradition.
the Stormers are Western Province (based in Capetown). Have been playing since the 1880s.
The Bulls are Northern Transvaal. 1880s also.
NSW (Waratahs) has been around even longer, the 1870s.
Auckland (Blues), 1883.
Canterbury (Crusaders) and Wellington (Hurricanes) 1879.
The Cheetahs (Blomfentein based) are primarily Free State (1895).
The Sharks (based in Durban) are essentially Natal, 1890.
The Lions are based on Transvaal (1890).
The Cheifs and Higlanders are drawn from regions with a long history and several NPC teams with histories more than 100 years old but are more amalgamations than the other unions.
The Force(Perth), Rebels (Melbourne) and Brumbies(Canberra) are basically completely new constructs, but that's simply because of the fact that historically rugby union wasn't popular in Australia outside of NSW and QLD.

All the franchises are from a region or province. Some don't emphasise a place in their team title, because they are drawn from several teams with long histories, or because of weird marketting concepts. Its the ACT Brumbies (Australian Capital Territory - the state Canberra is in), Melbourne Rebels, New South Wales Waratahs, Queensland Reds and Western (ie Western Australia) Force.
The kiwis use regional names too, hence Canterbury is interchangable with Crusaders, Waikato/Cheifs, Auckland/Blues, Wellington/Hurricanes. Only the Highlanders don't use their region name much.

It's mostly the Saffers who drop their regional name, but if you know anything about the history of their provinces, you know the regions they are from and their long histories.

Or would the gravitational pull of the center of the earth reform the planet into another round ball shape; thus creating another northern hemisphere? I suppose first you'd have to move out of your straw and tin shanty towns and actually gain a bit of wealth to afford to buy any decent weapons in order to achieve this first.... ofcourse i know you guys are still suffering from your droughts, or floods, or earthquakes and what not, so chances of that happening any time soon are pretty slim....

ha! Coming from a European, the continent with more public debt than GDP! Who are still in recession!
The ones who gave us the GFC!

Australia is the only western country not to go into recession in the last three years. We have almost no public debt. Our economy is growing every year. We have one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, and close to the lowest unemployment rate in the world.

Our finance sector is probably the most well regulated in the world.
We have huge amounts of resources, which we have massive markets for (ie India, China) right on our doorstep.

Not that I want to defend our old Europe and its old ways, but constant economic growth is a sure way to deplete the world of its ressources. Also, debt is as meaningless as financial speculation. There is currently way more money owed in the world than there actually is, money.
I am sure that life in Australia is great, but I wouldn't measure it in terms of money, rather in terms of scenery and style of life.

Leaving aside the economic and political arguments (that don't really have a place here), this does look like it was a great game

Finals like these often aren't high-scoring due to what's at stake, but in terms of intensity, this looks right up there with any Heineken Cup final or Test match

Must admit I thought the Crusders would win this at a canter, so well done to Queensland

As as aside, does anyone stay on their feet at the breakdown in S15? This could hurt some teams during the WC if they are being ref'd by NH refs

Hehe, it's true that we tend to run the debt as hard as we can. But when all hell will break loose on Earth in the final days of the fossil fuel era, we'll just stop paying the debt and move on. It's just the way we are, selfish :)

For some reason Lawrence just let the rucks go. I suppose he wanted to let the game flow without too many penalties (which I'm all for).
Also the Crusaders are notorious for their tactics at the breakdown (just like the All Blacks). They dominate by commiting numbers in waves, they get beyond the ball and confuse the shit out of refs who don't notice the offiseds and players going off their feet cuz it all happens so fast.

Fantastic final, i was rooting for the Reds and really happy they won. Props to the Crusaders for putting in a great battle.
