Gavin Henson steps Chris Latham to score a great try
A few days ago we featured a fantastic covering tackle from the flying prop Matt Mullan on James Hook which took place in the Ospreys vs Worcester match from Sunday. In the same game, Ospreys center Gavin Henson crossed the tryline, and we've had a few requests to see that try.
Henson, who was returning for only his second start since an operation on his right ankle last April, and after a short two week Ospreys imposed ban for missing training, showed us glimpses of the class that those who've followed his career have come to expect.
He was put into the gap nicely by James Hook, but then dished out a fantastic step that had Wallaby fullback Chris Latham stuck dead on his heels.
“There was a moment of magic with James Hook’s pass to Gavin that put him into the midfield hole, but he still had a lot to do,” said Ospreys coach Sean Holley.

“Gavin showed his fitness and sharpness and it was great to see him finish off like that.”
Holley’s comments were backed up by Worcester coach Mike Ruddock.
“Gavin looked good,” said Ruddock, who had Henson in his Grand Slam winning side of 2005.
“He looked sharp and strong on his feet.
“He was very balanced and made some impressive line breaks.
“Gavin is only going to get better when he has more games under his belt.”
If Henson stays fit, injury free, and out of 'trouble', we'll be sure to see more quality play from him in the upcoming few months.Time: 01:01

You would bet that Chris Latham would take down anyone 1 v 1 99 times out of 100. Nice step by Henson!
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 12:04 am
Latham has all ways been dodgy on defence - and i am australian and think he is still the best fullback in the world - the whole in his game is his defence
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 12:05 am
lol welsh rugby. it's a joke. any SH center would've done it. stop thinking cause one or two of your players are sometimes good means your whole country means a thing to the world...
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 12:15 am
@ tehsniper
firstly chris latham is one of the best fullbacks of all time
secondly it was only hensons 2nd game of the season since injury/suspension etc...
face it hesnon is better than any SH centre at the moment
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 12:25 am
I dont want to be on the same side with a potential idiot like tehsniper, but the try is not THAT good, maybe there are too many ospreys fans out there...
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 12:30 am
tehsniper do you ever have anything decent to say? Everyone of your comments i have ever seen have been spouting rubbish and trolling.
Rugbydump can you IP ban this guy to stop him from posting comments please, do us all a favor, hes only going to cause problems.

ha ha ha ha - better than any southern hemisphere centre !! Ha ha ha
Dan Carter is playing 12 this weekend - think Henson is better than him ?? Mortlock ?? Giteau ?? Jean De Villiers ?? Berrick Barnes ??
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 12:37 am
wow that was nice! :o

Tehsniper you are an arrogant fool. I can't see how you can have watched any Welsh/Magners rugby at all if you make comments like that. I happen to think that the Welsh teams are some of the best to watch in the world, and yes i do enjoy super 14s as well. Its just so immature to gainsay any other rugby than what is played in your neck of the woods.
Anyway, try was very well taken and Henson (when match fit) is one of the best 12s in the world today.

henson is one of the best - if the "best" means 10 or so people - can we change the argument to Top 10 - at least that he way - he might make it
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 1:52 am
its time the southern hemisphere get out of their own arse. in the northern hemisphere tours the players are nakard after long seasons and so the southerners win. in autumn the northeners are wih their club sides as long as possible and so they dont get adequate preparation and guess what happens.. the southerners win. henson is world class and i hope wales win all their matches as the best i can hope for as a scotland supported is giving a bloody nose to the boks and new zealand. when de luca and cairns settle in to international rugby then lets see whose better out of the south and the north
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 2:04 am
Good but not that good...nice line but the hole was huge n decent sidestep.
Reckon the commentators are Welsh?

Mortlock, de Villiers, Barnes, McAlister, Nonu, ... They are all some of the best centers in the world. But Henson is one of the best too, as are Jauzion and O'driscoll! I think NZ, SA and Australia are the best teams in the world but there are great players in NH too! Parisse, Ryan Jones, Shane Williams and the Scottish scrumhalf (Blair I think) are 4 of the 5 nominees for the IRB player of the year!!! Henson has it all : defense, kicking game, passing game,... and the X factor! He's definitly one of the best and I can't wait to see him against Carter!
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 3:25 am
i think tehsniper is a bit of an idiot.
awesome try by henson, no one in wales questions his ability because he is class, he needs consistency now.. but has to be up there as one of the best after he plays more! people saying latham is rubbish has no defence blah blah he is awesome.. but dont know where warriors midfield defence was!!
And something more for all you henson lovers http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rTavDoLa_lw&NR=1

abs7 said...
the clip is great - but no one tried to even tackle him.
no one even got close to him - and to think the ball wasnt even contested...
you have to wonder if a players ability to beat a non existence defense actually means that said player is actually a good player - in the case of Henson - there are better.......and they have all been named already - some be me and others
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 4:49 am
latham is still the king by a long way. he rarely missed one on one tackles when he was at the back. henson was jogging? and as far as northern hemisphere centres go, ur best ones are are southerns that go up there for the money. average european try.
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 8:00 am
tehsniper have you ever watched a rugby match? seriously stop posting on this site nobody likes you!
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 8:22 am
Theres no doubt that southern hemisphere is better but not by as much as some people think. the best comparisons to draw is mcalister and henson the best inside centre's of each hemisphere and o'driscoll and mortlock at outside and theres not much difference between them all world class players.
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 10:00 am
forward pass by james hook to gavin henson
the step & try are still very enjoyable
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 10:26 am
LMAO!!! was that shane williams that was knocked over in the back ground??!
Its strange cos Henson is a good player but he looked so slow and so unconvincing in his step, we have a player on our team who does the same thing, he throws the most outrageous dummies that you never think anyone would fall for but somehow they always do!
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 11:33 am
good to see henson involved in pretty things than in hair spray ads:)
he seems to be in good shape but not as talented as mc allister, steyn, nonu, or jauzion
By Flooz, at October 31, 2008 11:52 am
Okay, it's not that great a try, but it is a great show of skill. Henson on his day, and providing he's actually willing to play, is better than most other Southern Hemisphere centres. You might not like to admit it, but he is.
Also, if southern hemisphere rugby is that good, how come ex-SH Latham couldn't get him? It's not like he's Shane Williams, and for those of you who pretend you don't know who he is... oh wait, no there is no SH player comparable to him.
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 12:04 pm
Henson has such great technique, he makes everything look easy.
True southern hemisphere teams are better but their players play less rugby and have more preparation time for internationals.
Players in the NH play way too much. Look at the injuries wales and england have had.
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 1:05 pm
Very nice!
It looks like Latham actually messed up his knee on the action (cf last slow motion replay, he is grabbing it immediately after Henson's steps). It probably doesn't help but it surely wouldn't have happened had Henson not ran such a sweet line.
@tehsniper: what's the point of your comment? We're commenting on a great piece of play here, period. Totally pointless.
Perhaps I wouldn't be as enthusiastic as others about Henson till I see him producing this type of display for another few games but great player nevertheless. And the hairdo is also getting better. :-)
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 2:02 pm
'tehsniper', your an arrogant piece of shit, the purpose of this website is to appraise the great plays of rugby, something which none your comments seem to do, if you dont have anything good to say piss off and go somewhere else
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 2:10 pm
i dont think nonu is one of the best centres in the world. He is very powerful but he s not a good kicker or passer.Contepomi is playing very good at 12
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 2:55 pm
at the moment, I'd say Jean deVilliers is the best inside centre in the world, followed by Jauzion, Henson and McAlister
normally I would say Giteau is the best, but he's been playing at 10 this year so can't really comment.
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 5:18 pm
@tehsniper: so sick of your silly comments on each of the videos of this site.
If you love rugby why do you care if a guy is from the nh or the sh for f...'s sake.
Maybe you just like it when people hate you.
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 5:20 pm
welsh rugby is not a joke tehsniper. you're one
By Anonymous, at October 31, 2008 6:20 pm
henson is crap u all know it
when has he one anything of note ?
By Anonymous, at November 01, 2008 4:14 am
Giteau at 12 has moments of genius but poor defense.. De Villiers is very good but has a poor kicking game.. I really like Jauzion and McAlister but Henson is definitely my favorite 12 since two years. The guy makes too good tackles and too good kicks and has something really special! Everyone has his favourite players but Henson is great there's no doubt about it!
By Anonymous, at November 01, 2008 5:01 am
In no way is Henson the best 12 in the world. It was a nice try to watch, but in terms of technicality and skill level, it was very sub par and I would imagine if this was replayed 50 or so times, almost 40 or so would not have resulted in awarded points. Henson has been overhyped for a long time ever since he made a big hit on a young naive Tait, much like alot of the English players have been. Cips, Wilko etc are all living in the lime light, and people seem to merit them for who they are off field. After the AI's I may be eating my own words, but for Wales' sake I hope not.
By Anonymous, at November 01, 2008 11:04 am
hmm henson, perhaps not the best but how many can compare to the array of talents this man has? not as powerful as nonu, not a better playmaker than carter but perhaps a mixture of both so enjoy the rugby ignorant fools :)
By Anonymous, at November 02, 2008 10:55 pm
@ anonymus
what has gavin won?
2 grandslams?
2 magners league titles?
edf cup?
young player of the year (2003 i think
and dont bring the world cup into it because carter/giteu/mortlock/mccalister havent won it either
By Anonymous, at November 02, 2008 10:57 pm
2001 i believe mr anonymous above
By Anonymous, at November 03, 2008 5:37 pm
northern hemisphere rugby is what we call girlie rugby back home cos its like watching soccer.its like watching Beckham in a rugby jersey trying to be strong.Southern hemisphere are the power house of rugby. the english invented it but we perfected it just like any other sport.northern hemisphere will always have excuses.
