Friday Funnies - Paul Sackey's astounding rugby knowledge

A few weeks back we featured a rather amusing clip of Harlequins and England winger David Strettle on the sports quiz show A Question of Sport. Strettle looked quite foolish as he revealed that his knowledge of rugby isn't too great. This week, we’re following up with a clip of his England compatriot, Paul Sackey.

Sackey appeared on an earlier edition of the show, joining the fun with the usual comedic exploits of Matt Dawson, and the nutty Phil Tufnell.

The home question for Sackey and his team was fairly straight forward if you’re a rugby fan who pays attention to the goings on of the rugby world.

Sackey clearly had no idea though, and as one of our regulars mentioned on the Strettle post, he seems to be one of those players who treats rugby more like a job than a passion. If that is indeed the case, it’s perhaps one of the biggest downfalls of professionalism as we know it.

His reaction when being told the answer isn’t quite as funny as Strettle’s was, but it’s the antics of ex Test cricketer Tufnell next to him that we found hilarious. What made the whole thing worse though was that Sackey couldn’t even respond to Tufnell's amusing description of Victor Matfield.

All respect to Paul Sackey - on the park he’s a great player with loads of electricity. But off the field, in terms of rugby trivia, perhaps the lights are on but nobody’s home.

  • English wingers aren't what they used to be. Back in the day, me and the Underwood boys were pub quiz masters.

  • well, at least he did finally get it at the end, unlike Strettle who seemed to not even know who Doug Howlett was, even when Dawson told him.

Jesus, listening to Dawson it's really no wonder everyone seems to despise scrum-halves.

  • a year or so ago i heard sackey described by one of the england camp, possibly mike catt, as. "the only rugby player he knows who hates rugby." He only took up rugby at 17,i believe his true passion lies in football and think he even had a trial with Crystal Palace as a junior.

  • Not half as bad as Strettles one IMO.
I mean this one took me at least 3-4 seconds to realise who it was :D

  • It was so easy, and I'm not the best Rugby quiz buff ever and I got it right after the question was asked.

  • This is hilarious. Sackey sure did run pass Monty, and he sure didn't catch his name either :D

  • Let's be fair on him, he might just treat the sport as a job but his professionalism is second to none.
He's the one player, whom I've seen to progress consistently from club to test level and thoroughly deserves his England shirt :)

  • Surely if these ppl dont know anything about rugby, which as a player they surely should know SOMETHING, then on QOS they should ask for an away question.

  • SO easy. I'm 16, and i've played only rugby for 1½ years. same thing with the one on howlett! i didn't realize that could know so little about rugby or whatever. lol... this is embarassing.. shit

  • Sackey doesn't like rugby, he's a football fan, same as Strettle. They just happen to be talented.

10 tries in 16 tests in a team which never passes can't be bad.

  • I don't get the criticism really. He gets paid to play rugby not be a spectator.

And anyway I suspect England wingers don't like watching other teams play as they must be jealous how much ball the wingers get compared to them!!

  • It's pretty surprising to see this. Yes it's his job, but come on - if you're a salesman for example, I'm pretty sure you'd know the name of the other top salesmen around, especially if you'd competed against them at some stage?

Point is... it's embarrassing, and funny, and I would expect more from a top player.

  • frankyH,

Agreed. It is like being interviewed for a job, and they ask you about their products, or their competitors, or some conditions in the market...

I hope that that rugby is NOT becoming a bunch of automatons who only work out and follow a script -- like gridiron.

    You gotta love the widgers.
