Brock James and Clermont beat Munster 25-19

Munster slipped to their first defeat in Europe since lifting the Heineken Cup but a bonus point in Clermont-Auvergne kept their qualification hopes alive.

Brock James scored all of Clermont's points, including six penalties and a second-half try, to keep his team in the tournament with a repeat of last season's victory over the European champions.

But Ronan O'Gara's 73rd-minute penalty ensured Munster left France with a potentially crucial losing bonus point that keeps them in touch with leaders Sale Sharks with two of their next three pool games at home.

Marcus Horan got the visitors off to a nice lead in the 25th minute with a well taken try after O’Gara and James had traded two penalties each early on.

James kept Clermont in the game though with some pinpoint kicking after Munster gave away a series of penalties.

The home side stepped up a gear and it was James himself who beat two tackles to score a crucial try.

A moment of ill-discipline handed Munster the chance at a bonus point, as Pierre Mignoni conceded a penalty, which was followed by them being marched back another 10 years after comments made by the players.

O’Gara obliged, and the match finished 25-19 to the home side.

These highlights include not only the tries, but a few big hits too. Enjoy.

  • incredible hands off from Domingo...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 08, 2008 5:17 pm

  • Domingo is a beast, a really good mobility prop, and very good in the scrum too, he made another big han off in the match et lot's of big charge, but the hand off on O'callhagan and the charge on Howlett was hard ! I hope, he must be selected, on the next france squad for 6 nations at 25 years old he is very good.

    Good match !

  • man munster should ave won . They created soooo many tries but failed to finish them of and howletts try was a try. They would have won if they didnt recieve 18 points!!! in penalties .

GO IRELAND 2009 SIX NATIONS IS OURS!!! Jacobo.

  • DOMINGO WHAT A GAME
    ALLEZ CLERMONT !!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 08, 2008 5:53 pm

  • Great match, Clermont was in a good day and the players were, individually speaking, almost at their best. Munster played well but wasted some of their opportunities.
Clermont deserved to win, they were better, on that game.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 08, 2008 5:55 pm

  • Howletts near miss was never a try, that angle doesnt show it but from an elevated side angle you could see the ball never touched the line. Good game tho, leaves pool 1 wide open.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 08, 2008 5:58 pm

  • Commentators must be from the Clermont supporters channel or something.

Munster, with 2 home games, will get out of this group.

  • "followed by them being marched back another 10 years"

Bet that definitely hindered them. If they were all 10 years younger then it would be like playing a bunch school boys!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 08, 2008 6:00 pm

  • Sorry mate but Howlett's was not a try. Or being so upset by the French must have made you blind. :-)

Great game though. Should be a good second game too!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 08, 2008 6:02 pm

  • what a great game of rugby watched it on sky plus last night well happy i hit that record button ;-)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 08, 2008 6:06 pm

  • the commentators are for clermont because they're french of course. They want a french team to win the heineken cup they're not only for clermont but for toulouse and paris(though it's hard) castres and montauban

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 08, 2008 6:08 pm

  • Yeah but the commentators totally respect and notify the best thing for Munster. But yes, they want to see the french club win

  • Great highlights.

  • ahah...i love how people sees something or not according to they are for a team or an other!
Howlett try is not.... but like always, munster still a beautifull and dangerous team.

GO STADE FRANCAIS... i hope this year is yours

  • This game had nothing on the match before it- Bath Vs Glasgow

Great Match! Fast, flowing, running rugby with loads of great tries and(paradoxically)great defense from both teams

Glasgow were great and deserved the win tho IMHO.

  • What a hit from Rougerie!
    Great match.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 08, 2008 9:05 pm

  • it wasn't a great game in term of tries or actions but it was one of the most physical of this season.
    Clermont deserved to win.

Good to discover a young prop such as domingo, he had an incredible game

    enough for 6 nations..?

By Blogger Flooz, at December 08, 2008 9:31 pm

  • Christ Rougerie can hit! lol petty tall but not that heavy but that was quite a zinger!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 08, 2008 9:40 pm

  • i gota point out the obvious by saying leinster wud have finished them off...really they need 2 improve their backline down in bogland..and some1 tell paul o connel he's in dire need of a trip 2 the grafton barber...shockin barnet

  • "man munster should ave won . They created soooo many tries but failed to finish them of and howletts try was a try. They would have won if they didnt recieve 18 points!!! in penalties ."

Despite their great start Munster didn't exist during the second half of the game... About the penalties, I would add that this game showed that they would never have won the H cup last year with a clear ref.

  • domingo,mermoz,bastareaud,medard,kayser.... the new french team!!!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 09, 2008 12:15 am

  • this game looks good

never as good as bath vs glawsgow.... incredable.

hightlights from that game? or Halaquins vs SF?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 09, 2008 12:22 am

  • Bath Vs Glasgow was only as good as it was because of the error rates because of the ELVs.

People are acting like Bath havent consistantly been overwhelmingly entertaining for the last few years.

It's nothing out of the ordinary. Just looks better because of the low level of rugby this year caused by the ELVS.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 09, 2008 1:14 am

  • im a big munster fan but has howlett's defence this season looked under par?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 09, 2008 2:55 am

  • Is this Thomas Domingo son of portuguese imigrants? Because he could play for our national team. He is a great prop... Shore is gonna be a big star...

By Blogger Placador, at December 09, 2008 3:12 am

  • IMO....shouldn't be able to finish off a match woth a backwards kick. Happened in the world cup and ruins the suspense

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 09, 2008 4:42 am

  • Thomas Domingo is french.

  • Good game, always nice to see Munster lose. Stade Francais and Harlequins game was great too.

No mention of the IRB player of the year on rugbydump? Williams has had a great season and scored stunning tries at all levels, a shame that England doesn't have someone similar. Last player we had like that was Billy Whizz.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 09, 2008 1:26 pm

  • To Leinsterlion ye couldn't even finish off a weakened castres side off at home and now you're claiming ye would have finished off Clermont in France . as for munster's backline needing to improve it didn't seem to need much imoproving when Munster hockeyed ye at the RDS 18-0 with 13 of the eighteen points coming from our backline which apparently needs improving.Overall though it was dissapointing we didn't push on from the first half but our penalty count is something we can't let happen again as at Heinken Cup level teams punish you just like Clermont showed. however if you said to any munster fan that they would come home from france with a losing bonus point they would have been relatively happy as it means that their qualification for the knockout phase is in their own hands

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 09, 2008 4:49 pm

  • Clermont are better than people think and beat a strong munster team.
And btw I agree with anonymous..wheres shanes recognition for his award?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 09, 2008 4:55 pm

  • Domingo and Rougerie are out fro the return match. Sad, I quite like Rougerie and he's just gotten back from injury but it's only to our own benefit.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 09, 2008 6:26 pm

  • Man, I have NO idea what they're saying, but I love hearing the French commentators react to the game.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 10, 2008 1:45 am

  • Rancid,
how could the ELV's create a lower level of rugby, or create more mistakes?

I remeber reading your comment from the video RD posted about the inroduction of the ELV's and u treated it as if it were the end of rugby.

Yet even when a fantastic game is produced you manage to find the negatives just for the sake of bagging the ELV's.

This year the rugby has been just as high quality and world class as any other past seasons.

  • Firstly I was expecting the ref to put on a clermont jersey for the second half but he didn't need to we fell apart. Dont know if Tony is the right man.

  • Did you see that! Ronan O'Gara making a clean break! Hopefully we will see plenty more of it on Saturday. We have Flannery back we can't lose. Come on Munster!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 11, 2008 3:34 pm

  • "Good game, always nice to see Munster lose."

Zzzzzzzzzz! Sick of hearing comments like that. Fine you don't like Munster, but leaving a comment like that is just pathetic.

It was a great game. A real game of two halves. Munster dominated the first half and should have been out of sight. Then Clermont turned up for the second half and Brock James and Rougerie gave a rugby masterclass along with their beast of a front row combination.

They won the game tactically, kicking "Garryowens" (or up and unders) at practically every ruck, then storming up with Rougerie, Floch and Malzieu, and hammering the munster boys causing a turnover.
Ref wasn't great, but im biased.
Hate the way the breakdown is refereed with the ELV's. The team bringing the ball into contact is penilised 90% more then the defending team. Its practically rugby league now, because there is a turnover almost every 5 phases.
