Mathieu Bastareaud try after great step by Mark Gasnier

There was plenty of focus on the much anticipated Tana Umaga return on Friday night, but it was overshadowed slightly by a 22-13 win for Stade Francais over Umaga’s Toulon.

Toulon scored two tries to Stade’s solo effort, but it was Lionel Beauxis who kept them in front.

When the Parisians did score, it was a great try that involved a former Rugby League star and a young, up-and-coming Frenchman.

Mark Gasnier, who is looking more and more comfortable in Union every time he plays, made this great break with a fantastic step that left Sonny Bill Williams and Tana Umaga in his dust.

It was the tank-like twenty year old Mathieu Bastareaud, the cousin of Arsenal footballer William Gallas, who then collected the return pass and powered over the line.

Bastareaud was a standout player in the IRB Junior World Championship, and has since been impressive with Stade Francais, earning him a crack at Wales this weekend in the Six Nations.

French coach Mark Lievremont is giving him a chance to prove himself after his recent good form.

"We had to choose between Mathieu Bastareaud and Damien Traille, but Traille is ill and only played an hour while Florian Fritz is still suspended," Lievremont said.

"Mathieu has the profile to come into this team and bring his determination and power. He has played well for Stade Francais".

France play Wales this Friday night, causing somewhat of a stir with the traditionalists. It promises to be a cracking game though in which young powerhouse Bastareaud will be giving his all.

  • We could say france is in deep shit...
    Yeah we could say that.
(baby will be the french flyhalf)

  • That's a mean step... back inside his marker and the cover tackle from Umaga!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 25, 2009 4:34 pm

  • Damn too happy to see Bastareaud in the starting line up against wales. this guy is only 20 years old and he will rule for sure the next years.

    By Blogger K, at February 25, 2009 5:13 pm

  • bastareaud is a fat basterd and obv knows his way to the fridge

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 25, 2009 5:45 pm

  • Bastareaud is the size of most American Football running backs. He's certainly not fat, and for someone who weighs 241 pounds he can move.

    (he'll be a prop by age 25)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 25, 2009 5:59 pm

  • he runs like an American football running back as well!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 25, 2009 6:01 pm

  • has he got speed? of the mark?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 25, 2009 6:31 pm

  • tana cant do anything with tht

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 25, 2009 6:52 pm

  • He can run, he can score, but he can't pass.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 25, 2009 7:04 pm

  • It will be veryyyyyy hard against Wales :(

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 25, 2009 7:28 pm

  • Beniot baby at fly half is great news for wales, hes not a big guy with little fly half experience. Big Jamie Roberts is gonna give him a tough game.
Should still be a great match though!!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 25, 2009 9:13 pm

  • He should be Inside centre, rather than Outside. Great crash-ball player, but not a good distributor.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 25, 2009 9:57 pm

  • mean side step.. umaga got caught sleeping

    that's ok uso.. it happens

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 25, 2009 10:15 pm

  • nice showcase of talent there - first the agility and speed off the change of direction from Gaz, then great support, angle, and pure strength by Bastareaud to drag/ shrug off defenders to the line.

I am beginning to like the SF team more and more - need to buy me a pink jersey.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 25, 2009 10:33 pm

  • SF does grow on one. Anyone Notice SBW kinda watching, he gets stepped than puts in a half ass tackle Bastareaud.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 26, 2009 12:02 am

  • Gaz looks good - not a ball playing 12 though

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 26, 2009 12:26 am

  • Does Lievremont have something personal against Fred Michalak? Why choose Baby over him?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 26, 2009 1:06 am

  • Gasnier is a very skilled player, there's absolutley no shame in being stepped by him, the very best players in rugby league have been beaten by him.
He's got everything a great player needs, pace, alot of strength, amazing footwork, great passing and offloading ability, and a great football brain.
He's just starting to come good, he's gonna make an excellent wallaby.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 26, 2009 2:40 am

  • bastareud is the next nonu, umaga, only more powerful. in a few years france will be building a team around this guy

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 26, 2009 5:18 am

  • Michalak doesn't even play with Toulouse, so, the french team... He shouldn't think about it for a while...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 26, 2009 8:24 am

  • bastareud, is he a forward? How can he be nonu or umanga?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 26, 2009 8:26 am

  • In regards to SBW, he looks lost out there. It's the coaching. Gasnier is with a strong team with good players around him a very good coach, who has brought thru rugby league players before (Tuqiri and Mckenzie had a long history and it could be said that Mckenzie was the main one responsible for teaching Tuqiri the game) and a generally good training structure and environment.
SBW, stranded at one of the worst teams in France, with a novice coach and a substandard structure is clearly struggling to adapt and come to terms with the game. He should have gone to a better club with better coaches, preferably a coach with a history of bringing thru league players. In fact, SF would be a good fit for him. He's got everything needed to be a good player, strength, speed, agility, ball playing skills, great footwork.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 26, 2009 8:44 am

  • Bastareaud is a 13

agreed with anonymous post perfectly - in regard to SBW - in regards to Ewen Mackenzie at SF - i think there is a lot in what you say

SBW at Stade Francais - now that is a great idea

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 26, 2009 10:13 am

  • SBW couldnt get to the SF 13 cos the guy between them was too small to tackle high effectively - which is what he tried to do instead of round the bootlaces.

SBW's shoulder would have looked better with the first tackler already pullin the man down

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 26, 2009 10:20 am

  • I don't get this step it wasn't even that great. You tube clips of Barry Sanders please. Now that's how you shake some one out of their underwear.

By Blogger Hendrick, at February 26, 2009 1:50 pm

  • lol Anonymous at February 26, 2009 9:44 AM... About SBW... You makes me laugh but about Toulon... You're a noob. Toulon play bad this season not because it's a bad team, but only because they ain't got no 10. None of their flyhalves can find a lineout or kick a penalty. If they had only a 60% kicker, Toulon should be 7 or 8 on thechampionship board. You should know what you're talking about.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 26, 2009 2:36 pm

  • Problem of Toulon is not flyhalf or kicker. It's Boudjellal. This cock thought he could play the title this year by building a team and make them train 2 month together.

    What a big mistake.
Of course he bringd the money. But less he can be seen the best Toulon's kicker would made the job perhaps.

    By Blogger K, at February 26, 2009 2:54 pm

  • Wales should make this big lump look silly, has he really got anything other than power? I doubt it.
And i hardly think hes going smash through roberts & shanklin who are looking pretty solid at the moment.
    WALES-29
    FRANCE-17
Thats some top analysis and punditry haha

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 26, 2009 3:31 pm

  • Roberts and Shanklin will find their new master tommorow night : Mathieu Bastareaud , the new god of rugby.

Pretty sure at least one welsh player will not stand up after Bastareaud dealt with he's personal case.

    Allez les Bleus!!!

    By Blogger K, at February 26, 2009 5:54 pm

  • Toulon have money and good players, but that doesn't make a great team. They are trying to fasttrack their way to being a top side, and they are on their way but not their yet.
Umanga is a completely novice coach, it was foolish to expect him to be good straight away.
For a guy like SBW, who's completely new to the game and was always going to struggle to adapt to a team like toulon with instability, a new coach and a rapidly developing but ultimatley undeveloped training structure, this is a bad situation to be in.
He needed to go a long established, top side, with an experienced coach, preferably one who has brought thru rugby league players before, so he could be eased into the game and taught all the small things that he's lacking.
I miantain that a side like SF would be ideal for him, whereas Toulon is far to unstable an environment for him to succeed in.

  • To all those who don't think Bastareaud is a worthy center:
    - He likes impact play, but DOES pass when he sees there's a better opportunity elsewhere, as seen by the immediate pass he makes to Gasnier.
    - He then makes an effort to run around Gasnier to come in support and even hops over Umaga in his stride! (who said he was a fatass lousy prop? no offense to props, just quoting various comments made on this forum)
    - He then catches a dodgy offload from Gasnier
    - Runs at a great angle
    - Makes a dummy only props like Brian May would
    - Makes a massive handoff (tackle wasn't great, true enough)
    - Dives for the try (a little spice).
What would you need to complete a center's game apart from a side-step and maybe the odd kick? It's only a few seconds of game and it wasn't pure class, just efficiency, which frankly France are gonna need a lot of if they want to beat Wales

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 26, 2009 10:59 pm

  • That was a perfect offfload from Gasnier, what do you mean dodgy? He's been doing those for years in league, he'll almost always get a ball like that away in a tackle, if you can't catch it, you're shit, it's not Gasniers fault. In league that would be considered a good offload in contact and anyone who couldn't take the catch would be seen as shit.
    Dodgy? WTF?

  • Arnaud : I'm sure now that you ain't got more than 12 years old because you don't know nothing about rugby. I'll laugh out loud tonight when your beloved pink ball box will be blowed by welches centers. At this time, i'll think to you, and have a bear and a cigarette, what you probably can't do because of your young age. If you're not, that mean you're just dumbass. I wish you are not.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 27, 2009 10:35 am

  • Not slagging but jeez 4LC4TR4Z, your spelling and grammar is awful, i mean if your going to slag someone at least make it clear and look like you have some sort of brain.

Hey man enjoy the bear, whatever that is and maybe think of instead of thinking to others,
and whatever the f**k was that pink ball box statement meant to mean. Welch centres going to blow them .... hmmmmm could be taken up the wrong way as well.
Oh yeah and its welsh not welch!!!lol
Go back to school and learn some english and then come back and attack people for no reason because that what you seem to be attempting too.

On the clip Gallas' cousin looks strong and hard to take down with ball in hand so the welsh may have a bit of trouble with him, if france can nail williams and keep Bastareaud going through the centre and offloading to juazion it may be there night, but all that is so easy to say, its doing in thats the hard bit.

You cocksucker, he's from France, why don't you try posting your next comment in perfect French?

If you're marking other peoples posts it should be "your spelling and grammar are awful" not "is" and "you're going to" not "your going to". You need an uppercase I not to mention an uppercase W for Welsh and F for France.

Take your own advice: "make it clear and look like you have some sort of brain".

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 27, 2009 11:28 am

  • Kenny, how often do you post comments on websites in a language other than your first?
    Don't be such a c*nt.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 27, 2009 11:28 am

  • That s probably a bigger lack of rugby's knowledge to think Wales will come to Paris and achieve a 30 points win.

4LC4TRAZ : Poor post that deserves only a strong reply from Bastareaud.
We'll talk after the game you'll gimme your thought about the welsh defeat. :o)))

This the red card of Bastaraud in the world cup :

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5XndK-mcoQ

Strange to me : just before the game against Wales that has been won shamefully with help of referee.

    Cya tommorow dudes!

Ireland and England 2m, cant wait think it will be a lot closer than most people think, we need to use BOD to suck in players and let Kearney and Fitz loose........

Where are you, friend of ours? Btw, it seems the 12 years old kid were right, Bastareaud smashed the welsh centers and some others...

And don't hesitate to come here back to enlight us with your legendary knowledge of rugby ... or next time, just shup up.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2009 3:31 am

  • les bleus !!

stupid wales - no more grand slam

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2009 6:23 am

  • lol for the bear... BEER. Ok typing mistake.
And... Nope, I didn't see Bastareaud smashing anyone yesterday evening. But the scary beardie bear he was... :D A kind of bigfoot.

Arnaud ? Toulon won Bourgoin in Bourgoin, 13 - 23 with offensive bonus. And 2/9 at kicks. What do you think about ?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 28, 2009 7:55 am

  • About Toulon?
They will not be relagated for sure.
Team has been built 6 months and it takes time to make a team afficient (thos who praticed a team sports will know how true it is to create a teamworl) and I think they will continue to improve for sure.

About the kicker....what to say? 2/9?
Not mentally strong enough. That's all I can say.

And about the French rugby, I want to say something that might seems unreal for other but I think the French rugby only starts to rise now.

In England, Wales, Ireland,Scotland, NZ, this is almost the top game.
    In France : 1/soccer 2/tennis (ouch!) 3/horseriding (OUCH!) 4/basketball 5/ handball andt then....comes rugby (300 000 people only affiliates to a club).
Most of these clubs (90%) are located in the south of France and only now rugby starts to expands to bigger cities and northern area.

Bastareraud is only the first player of a new generation that is coming now. Djibril Camara also from Stade Francais, who is 18 years old and who will join for sure in the next month the french squad is also one member of this new generation.

Anyway after yesterday's game, I can't imagine Ireland dominating Wales.

    This would give us :

    Wales : 3W-1L
    France: 3W-1L (we'll easily beat England...hum hum...)
Ireland : 3W-1L (if they beat England and lose to Wales : ok strong expactation)

    Nice tournament this year!

    By Blogger K, at February 28, 2009 9:53 am

  • ireland for the 6N! cant believe wales lost... sigh... and to france too.

France played well tho, recovered from being 3-13 down.
