Super 14 Pick of the Week - Round 6
Bags of quality tries have become the norm for this season's Super 14. This week, the New Zealand sides finally turn up to produce some end-to-end magic, the South African Sharks and Bulls defend their places at the top of the log while the Australian franchises have had a week to forget.
Two long range tries from the Sharks wingers punished the pretty in pink Western Force who struggled up front all evening. The Crusaders were back to their best with some of the best passages of play all season, from any team. With sweeping back play taking them from sideline to sideline and some brilliant interplay from typically athletic Kiwi big men, have the Crusaders sparked a turn around or is it all too late?
The Chiefs escaped the mid-table log jam with a nine try blitz of New Zealand rivals the Blues, squeezing themselves into the top four. The Sharks are leading the pack with the Bulls close behind. The Waratahs, despite a close loss to the Crusaders retain a third place ranking. It is a matter of a one or two point difference for most teams, meaning it could take just one good game (or one bad one) to see much of the table totally revamped.
A special mention goes to All Black flier Sitiveni Sivivatu, delivering twenty of the Chiefs 63-34 victory, in the form of four superbly taken tries. We've thrown in a few of the best tries for our Round 6 Pick of the Week.

Lovely, lovely, lovely. Much better than the opening few weeks which were ordinary. Glad to see the Crusaders coming to the party, while finally we see just how average many of the Australian sides are at the moment. Only the Waratahs have it I think. Bring back Latham and Elsom...

As a NH supporter who works on a Saturday morning, I rarely get to see full games - just these try compilations, therefore I ask our brethren in the SH to put me right on something.
The press in England at the moment is full of stuff about how the ELVs have had the opposite effect that they were supposed to have - that they have created more kicking, that they have strengthened the defenders rather than the attackers. They say this has been tru of this year's 6N but also of the S14. What I want to know is, are they right? I don't wish to comment on it without knowing what I'm talking about.
I realise this may stoke yet another NH vs SH debate but that's really not the point. Have the ELVs made S14 better, or was it better a couple of years ago?

Love to see the crusader try from another angle. Funny how other teams can't emulate this kind of rugby. makes you wonder if its a mentality more than a skills issue, pass rather than looking for individual glory.

Really great S14 week;)...loved the crusaders try..that's what teamwork is all about.
@ RD On the better quality player: quality is better as for definition...but makes the video go stop-motion like and slows down or stops if you have other stuff on or don't make it load up all the way before you watch it.
keep em' comin'...SH is great (just as NH, i live in it;)

Great tries but why so few fans? For the Lions-Brumbies game two class sides, beatiful weather, one man and his dog watching. Why?

CSL, there were thousands of fans there but S14 is played in very large stadia for the most part, 50,000, 40,000 sometimes even 80,000 seat stadiums. That's why you get a great atmosphere in the GP for example, cuz you've got these small 10,000 or 15,000 sdeat stadiums that get filled and are compact. But that aint the case down south.
Ted, the game was a kick fest before th ELVs, that's why they were brought in. The WC 2007 final was the most boring final in history, a turgid kick fest. The ELVS., when actually applied properly do encourage more running, though they are not perfect. Some of the rulkes are debatable, but some are very good. The five metre scrum rule is excelent for example, you see some great plays from scrums now.
I kind of miss the maul, but I certainly don't miss the littany of penalties from mauling.
Anyway, it would have been good if the NH had actually trialled the ELVs,, rather than a weird hybrid version of them, so they actually knew if they liked them.

thanks RD - lots of good football and the new player worked perfectly, I'd be happy if you stuck with it.

great to see the crusaders bak to something approaching their best.from watching the 'tahs-crusaders match there seems to be a huge gulf in class between the new zealand teams and the rest, in terms of ball skills like offloading etc.wonder do they start this kinda stuff when there young or is it all just natural?was just interested...
