Leinster beat Leicester Tigers to win the 2009 Heineken Cup

Leinster won the Heineken Cup for the first time after holding off English champions Leicester Tigers at Murrayfield on Saturday. The 19-16 win and caps off another success for Irish rugby this season.

Leinster started the match in style after a powerful surge from man of the match wallaby, Rocky Elsom. Brian O’Driscoll then slotted a neat drop goal, before impressive youngster Jonathan Sexton himself slotted an excellent long range effort.

Leicester took the lead with a try from Ben Woods, who along with Julien Dupey, kept the Tigers in the lead. A try by Jamie Heaslip got Leinster back in the match, which was duly converted by Sexton.

Sexton again slotted a kick, this time under huge pressure as he gave his side the 19-16 lead heading into the final ten minutes, a lead which they held onto to win the match and the title of champions of Europe.

Winning captain Leo Cullen said: "We've had some tough times over the last few years. There have been some disappointing days, but the hurt in the past makes the wins sweeter."

Brian O'Driscoll, who had another good match, was over the moon.

"It feels great. I've played for this team for 10 years, some of the guys for 11 or 12 years. I love Leinster. It was a goal to win this competition before the season started. I couldn't have asked to win this with a better bunch of guys."

  • triangle of irish rugby?.. theres 4 provinces.. shame connacht are too awful to win anything..

By Blogger Mikee, at May 24, 2009 4:19 pm

  • Mikee,
Connaught are a development team and dont get half the funding of the other provinces. They lost most of their games by a couple of points and did beat munster and leinster at home so dont be so harsh!

Well done leinster tho! Great year for Irish rugby, GS, HC and Magners league in the bag!

By Anonymous aaaaaaaaargh, at May 24, 2009 5:50 pm

  • Leinster without Rocky and BOD isn't worth playing in french proD2. As BOD is getting old and Rocky leaving, I expect them to be crap very soon

  • haha what a cheeky smile from sexton whne he got that final penalty!! he played brilliantly he's definately next in line to take o'garas place as starting 10..another year or so and he'll be starting hopefully!!

  • YEEEEEEEEEES! LEINSTER LEINSTER

when the my hopes of the blues winning died when leicester took it in such a horrible way, the win for leinster is soo much sweeter now :P yes! kudos to leicester for great games as well.

  • What a nice way to cap a wonderful season for Irish rugby!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 24, 2009 6:05 pm

  • Some silly mistakes from Leicester in the last 10 minutes, isn't it? Vesty's kick off and Hamilton's line out...maybe these wouldn't change the final score but unacceptable for a top class team for sure.

    kinda guessing your from France....
so what have you guys done this year???
And if you have any respect for the European Cup you cant possibly say 2 players can win the tournament on their own

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 24, 2009 6:19 pm

  • True, Leinster as a squad won the Heineken Cup, its not as if BOD and Elsom were the only 2 on the pitch. They have as good a chance as anyone else of winning it again next year.

  • Connacht will be a force to be reckoned with in a few years

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 24, 2009 6:44 pm

  • hopefully Connacht will get proper funding. My only worries are if they get disbanded with this whole A league coming in so they wont have the development tag anymore.

Dont want to be taking anything away from this brilliant Leinster win, fair play to them, great for Irish rugby.

Words cannot describe this feeling !!

Hard luck Leicester. You guys were very unlucky, neither team played to their full potential but I imagine fatigue played its part. Your fans were awesome and your team is one of the great sides of Europe. Goodluck next year !

You haven't thought this through fitzy, when the SH test teams go north they still keep running in plenty of tries and don't get many scored against them. If you're going to stir up this debate you'll need a better argument.

  • Fitzy and Andy T shut the f**k up will yous, stop tryin to get the NH v SH crappy debate goin on this clip.
This is about Leinster winning the HCup....nothing else

BOD Elsom Sexton and Wright had huge games and Fitzgerald is class, couple of highball fumbles but his running at angles from deep is scintillating.

For Leicester, Dan Hipkiss was a constant thorn n Leinsters Midfield, everytime he got the ball he managed to cause mayhem.

Leicester's setplays were pathethic, scrum and line out never dominated like they said they would.
Infact Healy and Wright were better at scrums and lifting ta the line outs.

  • Well deserved for leinster and o'driscoll!!

It would have been a deception that BOD didn't win one H CUP

Now, i think ERC have to take some good decisions.

Few years ago, welsh, irish and scottish clubs were bullshits, because their clubs and league were bad-organized.

Now, the "province" system win something.

But there is now a problem of equality vs french and english clubs.

as celtic league is without relegation so without interest and shared between 4 clubs. Their real goal is H CUP.
French and english league are very long and strong and i think they are exhausted by teir calendar.

If ERC or these leagues don't do anything, H CUP will become a celtic cup and "biased" nigel owens will referee all the next finals

By Blogger Kenny, at May 25, 2009 2:22 pm

  • Good on you Kenny!! Elsom would be head and shoulders above no matter where he was.

Can't wait for the Lions Tour, hopefully shut some of you dopes up for about five minutes before you hop back up on your high horse.

So happy for Sexton, I went to his school, could always tell he was destined for greatness.

sorry but connacht were hammered (44-5) this year by the leinster 18s...who won the interpro's!! and seem to be hammered year in year out...and infact there has been 1 player from the connacht schools team who has played for the irish schools in the past 20years!! and for people who dont know the schools/youths setup...schools is far more intense and more skilled then youths!!

having said all that it is also due to connachts lack of funding and also the lack of a solid player pool from which to choose from!! so i would like to see them get more funding and hopefully become a more competitve side at all age levels in the next few years!!

  • I was fortunate enough to get a ticket for the match and thoroughly enjoyed the moment. Not the greatest rugby on show but committed effort from both sides.

Just so glad Leinster finally did it :)

wonder how we'll do next year.

Elsom is a big loss (heard this morning he is definitely leaving for Australia). recruitment is going to be interesting this summer

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 25, 2009 10:31 pm

  • Well done Leinster. Well deserved. But you could see Tigers were out on their feet... Game too far.

Hopefully playoffs in the ML will level the playing field a bit in that respect. The teams will play their 1st team players more often to get into the top 4, and have to play semi/final.

Can only be good for the sport and for the ML.

  • hats off to the leicester fans.... they were great fun over in cardif.

As for the munster fans there was very mixed feelings, some were a great laugh and prperly supported leinster and joined in on the sing songs and stuff, others complianed and argued about leinsters abilities and worst of all kept singing fields of athen rhy.

I dont see why you all wore your jerseys... suppose i'm glad you were there to see us win.

I found that the munster lads not wearing their jerseys were some of the soundest people there.... so fair f**cks to you lads

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 26, 2009 3:30 am

There are some seriously stupid people posting on here!!

By Anonymous andy, at May 26, 2009 3:41 pm

  • The Heineken Cup is all well and good, but the big prize of that match was the fact that Whitaker and Wright will never play again for Leinster. Thank God.

    By Anonymous Reddan&Rossarewaybetter, at May 27, 2009 12:42 pm

  • Congrats to Leinster, delighted to see them win it - If Munster can't do it, then I'm only too pleased if Leinster or Ulster can.
