The School of Hard Knocks - Episodes 4 & 5

We’ve got the next two instalments of the popular and intriguing series of The School of Hard Knocks, which sees a group of mislead youths attempt to turn their lives around by getting into rugby.

With Scott Quinnell and Will Greenwood, both former Lions, as their guides, the young lads are in good hands and have already made progress in certain aspects of their game play, as well as off the field.

In Episode 4 we see mr popular himself, Ben, arrive at training with strapping on his hand, which we later find out is a broken thumb which leads to him leaving the group, and possibly not returning.

The boys are put through their paces in off field scenarios that include interview techniques, discussions about their futures, and they then get a special message from Tony Blair.

One-on-one tackling drills later on in the day reveal some weaknesses, but big Scott steps up to give them the basics needed to take the man down. The improvements are instant and by doing the basics right, the players gain much needed confidence.

Episode 5 brings with it some bad news, as a valuable member of the side gets arrested, and then another drops out of training due to his short fuse.

An anger management course helps the boys deal with some issues, and one of the guys turns out to be a possible star goal kicker. With little time left before their big match, it's hard to say how they will fare. We'll keep following the progress as it occurs though.

  • What a terrible excuse for a tv program

  • some of these lads just do not want to learn and change. They are so set in their ways, because they think its cool and think thats how people want them to be, that many of them are just destined for lives in and out of prison. That Pete guy was off his t**s! Its a good programme but just shows how much work really needs to be done with problem kids.

    Wrong x2 you useless cocksucker.

  • ok iv seen all of these on rugbydump and i still dont get it!

whats the point?!!!? which of these men are gonna do anything with the oppotunity they've been given. I'll answer that none! just a bunch of, lets be honest uneducated inbreds....with no morals. it pisses me off. for that one lad to say he hurt his thumb on the marine training exercise and then to brag about smashing someone in the face its just disgraceful when u look at the fact he's training with Will Greenwood and Scott Quinnel. id be over the moon to have that offered to me. Stick em in the foreign legion then see how they fair. rugby's not for these yobs!

  • Why dont they go to africa or somewhere and teach them instead of scum like these?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 22, 2009 3:22 am

  • It's people like the majority of you posters here (conveniently under 'Anonymous') who foster the anger and resentment that these lads feel. How are they supposed to rehabilitate when there are careless f*cks like you lot who slander them 24/7? They may have had a tough life - which isn't any excuse - but what's wrong with throwing these blokes a lifeline? No wonder social values and standards have declined in the UK - you're all looking out for youselves. Gutless selfish pricks.

Cry me a river. What problems do these kids have that the rest of the country don't?

You've gone from one extreme to another. From fuck the lads too ohhh lets all feel sorry for these lads.

The problem is this a gimmik TV show. So its understandable some people don't appreciate it when they could have used people with a passion for the game, or atleast people with real problems.

Most these kids are in as good a position as you or me, they just choose to be cunts. Like the chap in episode one who wore his cap sideways. There's no way you can convince me he's had a hard life. He wouldn't survive in any troubled towns, areas or cities in the UK looking like that.

I think that's the major issue some people and myself have. If you're going to do a program like this then commit to it, use people with real problems who genuinely have a will to start a fresh and turn their life around.

    Do it properly.

The reason nobody will feel sympathy towards these people is because there's nothing to sympathise with. They had the same working class upbringing most of the British people have. I can't feel sorry for these kids in general, most seem to be sulky cunts who love to wollow in self pity.

  • chris i was anon who was pissed off. you hit the nail on the head! perfect statement.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at May 22, 2009 2:02 pm

  • Chris... It's a short segement on a 2 hour TV show, if you don't like it, don't watch it. Since when has TV ever been more about helping people than making a difference? It's about attracting viewers.

Terry Wogan gets a salary for Children in Need, whilst begging for money for charity.

  • Was it just me or did the guy coming out of prison look completely trollied on something?!

  • I don't know what makes me want to puke more - the chav scum who need a whipping or the sight of Tony Bliar's grinning mug.

  • I still need a translator, you know what I mean?

  • bring on the next episode!
    totally agree with denny crane

By Anonymous Keith, at May 25, 2009 8:50 am

  • Staggered by the negativity here.

The program's got an abrasive feel to it because it's trying to appeal to lads like the ones in the show. Lads who obviously have issues, and who obviously need a hand to get their lives back on track. Why anyone would deny a troubled lad just that is beyond me.

Good on Will and Scott for trying to use their fame to achieve something meaningful, good on rugbydump for promoting it.
