Classic Encounter - All Blacks vs Springboks 2004

After a dismal 2003, 2004 was a far better year for the Springboks as they went on to win the Tri Nations for the first time since 1998. Winning abroad was still an issue for them though, as this classic match was snatched at the death by the supreme finisher, Doug Howlett.

South Africa scored three tries through Jean De Villiers, Jacques Cronje, and Fourie Du Preez, as well as three penalties by Percy Montgomery. The first, from De Villiers, came within 23 seconds as they got the perfect start to the match.

The All Blacks stayed in touch throughout through five penalties from the boot of young Dan Carter, who had begun his rise to rugby stardom.

In the 79th minute, with the Boks in the lead at 21-18, the All Blacks got downfield and worked the ball wide to Howlett, who dived over in the dying seconds to break Springbok hearts.

The final score was 23-21 to the home side.

From those highlights it looks as if SA played all the rubgy yet didn't get the result. Some really nice stuff from JdV in attack and defence and a nice break from Percy too.

I always though JDV was relatively slow but from these last couple of clips he looks absolute gas. has he lost all his pace with age or have i just not seen him play enough? maybe he doesnt get the chance to ever open up properly at centre as well?

JDV isn't wuite as fast a she used to.
However it's also due to a couple other factors.
Defence's are alot tighter these days and the boks are playing a much more defensive style too.
Most teams play a more defensive style these days in fact, so attacks are less showy.
Also, some games are more open and some aren't, so while against the Lions PDV spent most of his time tackling (the boks took a veyr conservative, drive thru the forawrds and kick it away approach) in other games he'll get more of a chance to show his skills.

how many penaltys did south afirca give away??? i mean after scoring 3 tries they went on to lose it because they gave away 18 points in penalties! would of shot the team if i were manager at the time!!

I'm looking forward to this game. Should be good.

I'm not sure who to support though. It'll probably be SA, got more SA mates and despite feeling a bit robbed after the Lions series, i think they're a top side.

as a munster fan this vid just makes me smile. we've got the complete rugby player- dougie howlet and now jdv, very much a world class player. love it!

Seems like a mix of the English/French way of winning.

English for boring play and penalties.
French for pulling a last minute winning try!
