Midweek Madness - The Brussow Bounce

We've come across a pretty ridiculous, but fairly entertaining video for you today from the third test of the epic Lions vs Springboks series that concluded in Johannesburg on the weekend.

Young Heinrich Brussow was a thorn in the Lions side since their meeting with the Cheetahs, a match in which he single handedly got the home side back in the match by dominating at the breakdown.

His rise to the top has been rapid, and with injury and disciplinary problems from Schalk Burger, the youngster from Bloemfontein has take his opportunity with open arms and now looks set to be in the Springbok fold for many years to come.

As a genuine fetcher, Brussow, one of the smaller forwards in world rugby, realises that his game is pushed to the limit of the law.

"It's a fine line a fetcher has to walk - you have to be bold but you have to be careful, especially with three points against you a possibility if you transgress. You walk a tightrope.

"Slowing ball down is one of the keys to success in Test rugby because it gives your defensive line more time to get organised.

"At the same time, if I can turn over their ball, we have a superb backline that is very dangerous on the counter-attack. So if I give the guys an opportunity on both counts I will have done my job."

Funnily enough it was the Lions' Welsh fetcher supreme Martyn Williams who was slowing down the ball in the third test, as he got it lodged between his legs, preventing the Boks from taking a quick tap.

Brussow got frustrated, then literally manhandled Williams as he tried to shake the ball loose as if he were dusting off an old rug. The comical incident led to this crazy video, and a move we've named the Brussow Bounce. Don't try this at home.

Discussion Point: It seems that these days players get away with a helluva lot by preventing a side from taking a quick tap when a penalty or free kick is awarded. Should referees be stricter in governing this offence, or is it just part of the game?

  • martin williams:rugby legend.
possibly the smartest player in world rugby at stopping opposing teams from playing.
he slows down so much ball in the ruck, and,as we can see here, he stops the opposition from taking penalties quickly as well.
imo, this "bounce" should not be allowed and should have been a penalty reversal at least.and before people say "its a mans game",he was lying defenceless on the ground

By Anonymous Leeners, at July 08, 2009 10:37 pm

  • brussouw should have been penalised for this, you can't lift someone and then push them into the ground like that, Spies reacted appropriately by using his superhuman size to just lift williams away.

  • Supreme cheekyness from Martin Williams. Thats why I love to see him play. He just does things with a smile, and can turn a penalty situation into one that should be a reversed penalty for attacking him on the ground. He is just to damn smart and cheeky :p Temper, temper, brussow

    Awesome vid

  • that is the worst video i have ever seen in my life!! disapointed rugbydump!

By Anonymous NO .12, at July 08, 2009 10:45 pm

  • I think Williams had the last laugh here. If he hadnt been slowing down ball it would have been a penalty, but to reverse that would have been over the top.

Brussouw looks to be a really good player from what we saw in the series.

  • lol so cheesy, but I couldnt help giggling at the way williams looks when 'dancing'.

lighten up NO12. they didnt make it, just showed it. :) Worth a laugh.. cheers

  • thinking about it, brussouw showed brilliant strength to do this!

By Anonymous wayner, at July 08, 2009 11:00 pm

  • Absolutely referees should be stricter on delaying tactics.

What is the point of the IRB creating opportunities to "speed up" the game, such as quick lineouts and quick taps, if they are not going to enforce the advantage that comes from them?

Throwing the ball over the adverts or handing them to a fan should be a FK, or arguably a PK if it's in a "red zone" situation (isolated player carried into touch).

By Anonymous cheyanqui, at July 08, 2009 11:01 pm

  • brussouw is an insanely good player! even though i like burger as he has no respect for his body and tackles his heart out and charges into people. i think brussouw should be a permanent replacement for him.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 09, 2009 12:09 am

  • boys will be boys. I would hate to see a yellow for either incident all rolled into one. Yellow for Martyn for slowing the ball?? yellow for Brussow for manhandelling a player?? I think not, quite funny all the way round!! Play on gents.

By Anonymous ToulouseFan, at July 09, 2009 12:35 am

  • In terms of whether preventing the quick tap penalty should be more harshly penalised: I play scrum half, and if i ever see the opposition awarded a penalty and i have my hands on the ball, I take a quick tap and run off. The ref calls you back, 'but it was an innocent mistake!' and the chance of the oppo taking a quick tap is gone. Works every time.

  • Williams is such a wily old fox, i thought he out played the SA no.7 all game. Great player up there with McCaw, Smith and Back easy.....my favourite backrowers of all time.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 09, 2009 12:57 am

  • I recon, williams is a good player. But i can't believe everybody here love his "slowing the ball and stopping the game" game style.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 09, 2009 1:10 am

  • that was the first game of the series that brussow was neutralised-david wallece is a great player but martin williams should have been played from the start-hes got a fantastic rugby brain and as shown in the vid plays to the limit of the law-he had obviously pushed brussows nerve!both awesome players and funny vid! gog rugby nut

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 09, 2009 1:18 am

  • It should have been a penalty to the Lions and maybe even a yellow card for foul play by Brussouw.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 09, 2009 1:18 am

  • Lion's sfans wont like this hehe funny as hell

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 09, 2009 1:27 am

  • Williams is a cheat and if I was the referee I would have given SA an extra ten metres straight away. And people who pretend that they think the penalty goes their way and take a quick tap to slow it down, I'd give ten for that too. Terrible video by the way.

Good on brussow for roughing him up a little.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 09, 2009 1:36 am

  • I agree with the play on chaps comment, as both fouls cancelled each other out.

(Ropey enough vid, but Maybe the smiling and walking forwards and backwards saves this vid...especially with the music!)

By Anonymous mise, at July 09, 2009 1:50 am

  • I think more important is that referees and the IRB should stop trying to kill the ruck for the sake of 'speeding the game up'. If the other team can't prevent the ball from being slowed down, then they deserve to have slow ball.

  • Martyn Williams has to be the only player in the world who makes me wanna turn off my tv.

It makes me kind of sad that so many people admire him, and "his ability to slow the ball down". You can admire a player for his awesome technique, his great skills ball in hand, his ability to defend, his commitment in the rucks, but for slowing the ball down?

How can anybody admire a player for cheating in one of the most detrimental ways to the game?
And don't tell me this is part of the game of rugby. Like in any other sport involving combat and battles , either you win or you lose the battle of the ruck, straightforwardness, respect of the opponent. You don't try to sneak round and poke your opponent in the ass with a stick and then put a smirk on your face in front of the ref.

he is certainly a good backrower. But since few years, he is often doing this kind of stuff with wales or during h-cup

hard for his fans to admit it

  • This is what happens when you reckon your the best fetcher in the business and then some old git comes along and litterally fetches you out of the whole game.

Boks lost nearly every break down in that game even though they had their first team fetcher and flankers playing.
Williams looked good all game, able to slow the play down, rob loads at the break down and when in attack he had fast hands and made the right decisions.

All this rubbish about Williams being annoying for slowing down the ball is fresh coming from boks fans who were not complaining when brussow was doing the same thing for the cheetahs and the boks in the first test. Total hipocrisy.

Later on in the game Brussow again lost the head with Phillips and just looked like a little school boy throwing a fit.

Could be a great player of he sorts out the sore loser mentality.

    You cant win them all!!

Brussow shouldn't of been allowed to do that, a little extreme. Williams did his job anyway :D

But as it is, its a totally butchered by somebody who really needs to get out more and get some sort of social life.

  • to answer the question, i'm with the part of the game crowd!! you get away with whatever you can..

and as for the bitching over martyn williams, you people haven't got a clue.. he is class with great hands, prob the best hands in the business.. and if any of you ignorant gits watch him on a reg basis you would see this... i support him being one of the best flankers in the world. i would place him above george smith.. but mccaw is number 1, martyn aint far away..

and as for cheating all good 7's cheat well.. martyn is an expert at slowing the ball down... richie mccaw is a pro at coming in from the side to steal ball.. but argues he's competing for the ball.. brussow first test and for the cheetahs he was on his knees half the time digging out the ball... POINT, ALL 7's CHEAT. play the ref. and try to get away with as much as possible..
    Abs7

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 09, 2009 2:04 pm

  • My point exactly Abs, play the game to its limits as the ref calls it. So if your "slowing" the ball down and the ref doesnt blow his whistle, then your not slowing the ball down!!!!

Get on with it, its only cheating if you get caught.

Will be interesting to see McCaw scraping with Brussow for the ball on the deck.

My guess is both will slow the ball down so much that the game will grind to a halt lol!!!

I'm French, Kenny, this is no Boks complaining, I'm just tired of seeing Williams get away with that kind of shit.
His impact on the game is solely based on fetching and trying to piss everybody else off. This video is typical of Williams, that's the only kind of thing he will be remembered for.
Mccaw has an attitude, and his destabilzing other players is not based on acting like a fucking jerk on the field.
If I had 2 flankers to pick, it would be Mccaw and Dusautoir (a little chauvinism never hurts). Just look at some slow motion videos showing their tackling technique, how efficient they are at driving the guy down, and how quick they are back on their feet to compete for the ball.
    That is pure class.

  • Martyn Williams, man of stone, look at how that Scot tried to smash him in the 6N and Williams just got up and walked away.

    Funny vid.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 09, 2009 3:57 pm

  • Realistically it was a penalty against williams at first but surely it should have been reversed for brussow's reaction? From when could you lift someone and throw them into the ground

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 09, 2009 3:57 pm

  • Martyn was perfectly allowed to do it for protection of the ball and the initial narrow gate ruck, and not have heard the whistle.
After all, it's none of the defending team's business to ensure the attacking team get the ball. Of course, throwing it to the stand is out of order. My favourite trick is gently (and slowly) throw the ball onto the ground next to the feet of the other team's player, so they have to reach for the ground to fetch (and sometimes a few feet short as well), and the ref can't blame me for holding onto the ball :)

"youth and flair are no match for guile and treachery" :)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 09, 2009 4:01 pm

  • piaruskov, Dusautoir is one fine player, and immense defender. My only opinion is that he lacks the physical prowess of a ball carrier.
there's so much talk about 7 being a pest, but in reality, it depends on what type of 7. Martyn is probably the last of his kind, in the sense that he's more keen getting out there to make sure the back line is going well.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 09, 2009 4:11 pm

  • lol, is that a Frenchman there moaning about someone cheating?

This from the homeland of the gayest act of cheating that ever graced the hallowedrugby pitch. EYE GOUGING !!

Ask ex pro's from yesteryear about how low French players are, the amount of times that they've felt the French feelers touching them in the eys whilst playing with and against French players.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 09, 2009 4:27 pm

  • "I'm French, Kenny, this is no Boks complaining, I'm just tired of seeing Williams get away with that kind of shit."

Im Irish and like i said earlier, if the ref doesnt blow his whistle then its not cheating.

The best players in the world listen to the ref and play by it.

"His impact on the game is solely based on fetching and trying to piss everybody else off"

Last i checked that is every single no. 7's job... Get in their quick and get the ball or if you cant, get it slowed down.

If your not doing either of these things as a no. 7, you better be either tackling your heart out or carrying the ball the length of the pitch and if you can do all of the above on a regular basis, then you are the best damn no.7 in the world.

    piaruskov
I really dont get what your giving out about, everything you are saying doesnt make sense. He is a good player at what he does = fetch ball, slow down ball, tackle and pass.

Good No. 7, not amazing considering his age but still a decent player.

Game over mate, just stop, you sound silly.

By Blogger Kenny, at July 09, 2009 4:28 pm

  • "wayner said...
thinking about it, brussouw showed brilliant strength to do this!"

Maybe to a normal "man on the street"

To a pro player that is nothing, id say he was showing brilliant restraint if anything.

For example, that action is basically a deadlift (with interest) or the first movement of a clean. As a 75kg amateur player (and a winger at that) I can deadlift 150kg and clean 85kg for reps. So a pro would be expected to lift much heavier than that.

A your can bet the SA players do alot of powerlifting.

I seriously doubt that you could lift me (85kg) (and a ball!!) after 68 minutes of a test game and bounce me about like a cushion.

You probably could but you would be straining and in no way would you be able to do with the speed or ferocity that Brussow did.

Bad move by him but boy did he do it well.

Id say you would end up looking like a gimp and just straining a muscle and the other guys jersey.

By Blogger Kenny, at July 09, 2009 5:35 pm

  • Fucking hell Broussows not super man!!!!im an amateur and i can deadlift 140kgs its not that hard... its a bit like dragging some one ou of a ruck its not hard and we've all dne it once when playing (well those on here that actually play rugby not just talk shite about it). All u SAs think Broussow is so tough nah sorry grabbing some when their down is easy. Martyn Williams just grinning was the tough thing to do. • Fetcher's not an official term, just a term used to describe a ball fetching no 7.
    Like Mccaw, Smith or Brussow.
For some reason NH sides don' seem to produce classic, ball stealing no 7s much, so maybe that's why the term isn't popular there.
Bu there's other exapls o terms not used everywhere. In Australia and sometimes NZ, a fly-half is refered as a five-eight for example.

Either make sure that its atleast 2 on one or make sure the man is on the ground and not able to smack u square in the jaw. But hey as was seen in this tour the south africans are a bunch of cheats anyway.

  • I think the lions purposefully aggravated the boks, and they played right into their hands. I think if the boks just left them alone, then maybe the ref wouldve penalised the lions for slowing the game down...maybe. on a different point -the phillips penalty was ridiculous - shouldve gone the other way. Not sportsmanship behaviour and its not part of the game (and b4 any1 says that SA didnt show sportsmanship, then fair enough thats your view but 2 wrongs dont make a right)broussouw is my hero and i think frans steyn is coming onto form again!! come on tri-nations!!

  • why do people always call SA massive?? they're just tall and have some muscles.. 194cm and 109kg is not massive.. 186cm but 120kg at no.8, now thats massive!! 186cm 114kg and plays wing, that is massive!!
to me i would consider muscular people being massive not tall

  • Martyn williams is a very modest man, he said "i thought my opposite number, Heinrich Brussow, was outstanding and he's been a real find for the Springboks in this series.

We had quite a tussle; there was one moment in the second half when he picked me up and threw me on the floor.

The Boks had been awarded a penalty and I was lying on the floor with the ball between my legs. Brussow didn't like that.

Then Pierre Spies got hold of me. He's absolutely huge and if I'd fought back, there would have only been one winner! "

  • on the martin williams thing...think he was dead right!!

only way to win a close match of rugger is to get the other team to give away stupied penalty's!!

the main way to make them do this is getting up in there face and using little bits of cheating!!

by slowing the ball down here SA couldn't start again quick which would of been bad for the lions as there whole defence was back peddling!!

    fair to williams on this!!

don't think it should of been a reverse penalty though!!

  • haha funny video xD!

  • "how that simon shaw was banned and brussow wasn't is beyond me"
Agreed, Brussow is such a dick!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 11, 2009 11:20 pm

  • I laughed at this at the time and it's still funny now.

I love the look of "Yep, we can that as long as you want, it's your time buddy" in the smile Williams' face.

The best rugby players in the world have always played right on the edge of the laws & been able to get play around the ref's view. Williams is just one of the masters at it and he's stepped far further over the line then he did here and got away with it.

Brussow is really going to have to mature if he wants to reach the potential he's got. If he's going to let players like Phillips & Williams make him react then he'll spend so much time out of play that SA will just move to somebody more professional.

I understand he was humiliated because he was completely outplayed through the whole match but when it happens he needs to get his head down and play better instead of having a tantrum.

By Anonymous Calon Lan, at July 12, 2009 12:42 am

  • Wtf do you mean Brussouw was outplayed? He was turning the Lions over more than ever. The reason why the Boks were being turned over was due to Kanko not hitting the rucks, Chilliboy being way smaller than Bismarck and less aggressive and Muller being a sack of useless meat, non-Bakkies Botha.

Martin Williams should have retired after he missed that penalty shoot out, a kick at the 22... Like all NH teams - Once a loser, always.

  • reminds me of Cartman trying to rid the world of Ginger Kids... especially "Daywalkers" like Martyn Williams.

just kidding, two quality players, one with a great career, and another with a great career ahead of him

  • name of the song please?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 13, 2009 11:05 pm

  • Brussow was frustrated becasue he was being outplayed at every breakdown by williams, not becasue he was slowing the ball.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 16, 2009 11:44 am

  • hahaha... lions are sucks.. how can 4 countries combined but still cannot win the series.. southern hemisphere rugby are far more better than northern hemisphere rugby..
