Marius Joubert hatrick against the All Blacks in 2004
With the Tri Nations being the biggest thing on the go at the moment in the world of rugby, we're randomly featuring matches from the past as we add to our comprehensive archive off the best bits from the game we love.
We've had a few requests for this footage over the years, so today we've got it for you - the Marius Joubert hatrick against the All Blacks in 2004.
Playing at Ellis Park during their Tri Nations winning campaign, South Africa won the match 40-26 thanks to an inspired performance by Joe Van Niekerk at number eight, and then of course, Joubert in the centre.
He became only the second South African player to ever score a three tries in a match against the All Blacks, after Ray Mordt did it way back in 1981.
Van Niekerk, who is now with Toulon in France (and captained them last season), had one of his best performances in the green jersey on that day. It shows you what an impact a big, fast, and skilled number eight can have off the back of a scrum.
All Black fullback Mils Muliaina scored a brilliant try himself from the back, running through most of the Springbok defense. We'll get that up sometime soon too.
Over time we aim to randomly feature other great Test match hatricks. Do you have any in mind that you'd perhaps like to see or share? Lets us know and we'll see what we can do.

On the second try, why didn't Rokocoko try and wrap him up rather than shoulder barge him? Poor missed tackle for the first try! That number 8 looked handy, where is he now?

Mehrtens great tackling as usual!

Number 8 Van Niekerk is with Toulon in France now. He had injury troubles throughout his career, but when on form (and fit!), was a great player for the Boks.

RD could you try get O'Driscoll's hat trick against France in 2001?
By Joe, at August 05, 2009 6:01 pm
3 tries great for different reasons. first was great running (though suspect defence from tana), 2nd was good support and 3rd great opportunism.
ahhh tana. first one poor defence and the third a distinct lack of wrapping arms around.

By mike, at August 06, 2009 1:00 am
i think tana was compensating for mertins and stood close in incase van niekirk attacked the line, and left too much for himself to do when joubert took the ball

RD can you please get Rathbone's hat trick against England in 2004?
By Anonymous, at August 06, 2009 11:10 am
Van Niekerk was and still is a serious player umanga missed that tackle royally and the switch for the last try was epic
By ybr, at August 06, 2009 11:28 am
Despite being a scot i wouldn't mind seeing BOD's hat trick against us in 2002. Also the pass to Horgan for his try in the same match. He absolutely killed us in that game.
By Abbyno7, at August 06, 2009 3:53 pm
BOD
20yrs old and scores hatrick gainst france. wont beat it

"Vincent Clerc against Ireland in 2008 ?"
Already on the site, buddy.
Search for "clerc" and the video is under "Six Nations Pick of the Week Round 2" - about 2 minutes in.

Show the 5 try demolition from Alesana Tuilagi to Tonga.. that would really set the standard...
By Anonymous, at August 06, 2009 11:45 pm
Yeah I'd love to Rahtbone's hattrick against the poms. In fact that whole game's highlights would be good to watch. 51-21, entertaining game.

Joe Van Niekerk was elected best player of Top 14 last year. Considering how many great players are playing there...
Spies is a great player too but IMO he still can play with the Boks.
