Springboks win the Tri Nations after tense battle with the All Blacks

The Springboks are the 2009 Tri Nations champions after beating the All Blacks 32-29 in a dramatic match in Hamilton.

The Boks withstood a late comeback from the home side, who frantically threw everything into it as they looked to sneak the win after coming back into the match excellently.

Needing only a bonus point to insure tournament victory, the Springboks went into the match confident and did the job in the end by winning. Three long range penalties from Francois Steyn, a penalty, dropgoal and conversion from namesake Morne, and tries by Fourie du Preez and Jean De Villiers, meant the Boks would come home with the silverware despite a tense last 15 minutes of All Black pressure.

"We said to the guys at half-time that the All Blacks are an 80-minute team and that proved true," Smit said. "But I was so pleased with the character we showed.

"We did the hard yards in the first 40 and wanted to stay on top. The All Blacks came out firing and we needed to up the intensity. We didn’t manage that completely but did enough in the end.

"I’ve waited for a long time for a win in New Zealand, this is my first. So personally it’s satisfying, but more so for the team."

Springbok coach Peter de Villiers was pleased with another historic win for his side.

"It’s huge. We’re on top of the world," De Villiers said. "To beat New Zealand in New Zealand is a huge honour. We had to work hard to keep them out and we did so."

OMG - Just realised something - the Blacks haven't beaten the Boks this year!!! WHOOP WHOOP! Now that is something to celebrate! Fantastic match. Sure the AB made the work harder than necessary, but credit for dragging themselves back to the gmae. First time I saw Carter play badly, and first time I ever seen a player to come back so strongly in a game. The kick passes he did towards the end were phenomenal.
In a nut shell, the AB showed why they're the most talented side - they looked far more dangerous in broken play when there's no set plan to follow and everyone was thinking on his feet, than in any of the set pieces they strung together.
The Boks showed any who side dare make mistakes against them, the will be duly punished them - even the AB.

Great game, great win boks.

Not taking away from the Boks and the intensity they brought to disrupting the ABs, but I agree with whoever said Carter played badly, it was Donald's uselessness that put pressure on him. He's just not international standard.

It takes some team to win without their backs touching the ball, outside the half backs and Steyn at FB, I think the others combined had the ball less than 10 times, certainly Habana and both centres.

Also, I think Spies (the most overrated player in rugby) had minus metres carried he went so far backwards.

Really looking forward to November internationals.

In the first bok try im not so sure it shouldnt be a penalty in favour of the ABs. Rocokoco was hit while in midair holding the ball, Muliaina's "knock on" was probably caused by bok hooker duplessis throwing his arm around his throat. "high tackle", isnt that the term?

Francoise Steyn is certainly a good kicker However, apart from that I don't think he is that good. I don't think I have ever sen him make a line break in an international or off load in the tackle.

Even in defense he is average. Don't see what all the fuss is about...oh I guess he is handsome and has nice hair. But apart from that....

...quite an exciting match for a neutral - for the sake of competition, I was leaning towards wanting NZ to win, but SA looked unstoppable.

The All Blacks were exceptional at playing the ball on the ground, though (minus the knock-ons). They showed why they're possibly the best team at winning rucks...but no one compares to SA at the lineout...what a match!

1) The Boks are the strongest rugby team I have ever seen

2) The back who replaced donald and the backrow replacement who came on late should have started the game. Winning teams play the best players at their positions. Why do the AB's always screw this up?

3) The New Zealand commentators are brutally bias.

4) The Lions were the 2nd best team this season. They could have beaten the Boks and played the most consistent rugby this season.

As an England fan, I've gotta congratulate the Boks for a fantastic Tri-Nations win.

Awesome performance, and I find it ironic that they are now being accused of being boring and not scoring tries etc - when England were probably the best team in the world, circa 2001-2003 roughly, the exact same accusations were thrown at us - rely on flyhalf, too much kicking, no tries etc. It's simple sour grapes - SA are the best team in the world right now, and others should stop moaning and focus on trying to better them.

I think the Lions may have done the Boks a huge favour, giving them a great series to test them right to the limit and prepare them nicely for this tournament. Examples? Heinrich Brussow and Morne Steyn - two players who emerged during the tough Lions series and are now rising up to legend status very quickly.

Well done, and I wish them well in the autumn series - almost makes me wish England could have another crack at them this time round!

As much as it pains me to say it - SA are just too good at the mo. They do everything (bar their scrum)at 150%. Coaches teaching youngsters should show them video clips of the Boks basics, that is what true rugby is all about - do the basics very,very,very well and you WILL win games.
Well done boks, I was one of the many sceptics prior to the 3n, however as you can still call yourselves no1 in the world after the 3n - you deserve all the congrats from rugby fans all over the world (bar some of the idiots above, who are just upset that their teams trophy cabinet doesn't hold everything yours does)

even though we came within 3 points and almost snatched it, we were never in that game. our lineouts were the worst theyve ever been, our scrum got crushed, out tactical kicking was way off, and our backline was actually IMPROVED by subbing on toeava and that new no-name winger (the only time we got some momentum and tries going). grats to the boks, they played very well, but come on nz, we coulda had it if the basics were in place. i mean, we came within 3 points and played like a B side!!! what im trying to say is that in that match, they didnt win, as much as we lost. beat ourselves.

What amazes me most is how Brussow and Msteyn have both made the transition from S14 to international level so easily, they look like they have been in the bok side FOREVER! I put it down to the experienced players around them, that has go to be it? Any other suggestions?

Burger does not look fat an unfit. He just found himself with a mismatch on the AB try. A fast center with a bit of space was able to run round him. Not unusual for a 12 to run around a 6!

The ABs were mutch better when they brough on was it Tovea??? and Cory Jane.

Donald was thrown around like a rag doll!

My point was that the 'old' burger would have stopped that guy - even though he is a back... Even if NZ got that try at the end, SA had still won it. Because if SA got 1 point out of that game then they had won.
SA would have got a point for losing by less than 7, which gets them a point. Then the AB's would of needed 6 points in the next game which is impossible, they could of only got 5 at the most.

i think its fair to say however that this fairly good sa team will be quaking in their boots when they come up against the grand slam, churchill cup, magners league,heiniken cup winning team in november.

Anon above, you're an embarrassment to us all (Irish). I think we'll have a good go at it, and if the Boks take us lightly then maybe, but one victory against SA every 3/4 years doesn't make you the best or undisputed team in the world. At most victories over AUS and SA will elevate Ire to 3rd.

To someone's query about JDV and FSteyn's chances of playing in AIs, it depends on the stance the SARFU takes, but mostly overseas players are not picked, bar Butch James last summer v Wales. Smit and Matfeild both returned to SA from France last season in preparation for the Lions series.

If they aren't picked I think they'll be massive losses, especially JDV, although Jantes (??) will be back at FB by then. Can't see a high quality 12 filling the role unless Pienaar plays there. Definitely not Jacobs.

I know this might derail any sensible conversation on the topic (people get up in arms so easily on the internet), but can anyone tell me why most of the B&I Lions players who went on tour are still taking a break? I get that it was physical, and I understand why those who got injured are out, but for the Boks, they went straight from the tour into the 3N campaign....

I would be ecstatic if Ireland win against SA in the EOYI...but I just can't see it happening. I hope I'm proven wrong, though, come the autumn tests.

eh - the Lions tour came at the end of the NH season including Heineken Cup, Challenge Cup, Magners League and Premiership. SH international season hadn't started and, as RD highlights show, provincial stuff in the SH is still going on. Basically they're having a well-earned rest!

contracted (professional) players have a mandatory rest period from playing in games for something like 6ish weeks which they must take every year. They're finishing up from this period now, kearney had his 1st start since the lions tour for leinster the other day.

Great game of rugby. The AB come-back in the second half had me sh*tting meself for a while. If the game had another 5 minutes, we might well have lost.

John Smit played his heart out, and he looked like he'd gone 12 rounds with Mike Tyson by the end. The balance of this Bok team is perfect right now and we'll really miss F Steyn and Jean Div when they move north.

The AB's need to find a midfield combination that works. Since Mauger left, no one has really claimed the 12 jersey. Donald is not the answer. And Nonu, for all his strength and line-breaking, coughs the ball up far too often. Toeava might be the guy. Also, Andrew Hore is a great player, but he must learn to find his jumpers or he'll be out of the team. Last comment about the AB's - I reckon Adam Thompson should start, even if that means shifting Kaino to 8.

Can't wait for the Boks to play the NH teams. I seriously wouldn't put any money on a single NH victory.

To an ANON above, it wasn't Rob Kearney who played, but his younger brother David, a Leinster Academy player. The only test Lions who have played so far are Mike Philips, Lee Mears, possibly Tom Croft and maybe Harry Ellis. I know that Croft played pre season v Munster, he scored the winning try in last minute.

SA just have that winning aura around them atm. Most teams that play them have lost before they even get there. Their defence is ultimate. Heinrich Brussow in open play. Matfield at the lineout. JDV and Habana intercept magnets. You literally have to play inch perfect rugby to beat them.... that was painful to say. Congrats anyway.

actually most of the boks had just finished the s14 final so this wasnt the beginning of the SH season. the reason for the NH teams having a break now after the lions tour is coz they're not used to being smashed up and hurt by such a powerful and strong team as the boks.

Its cool that the boks won the Trinations. They are my second favorite team after France!

It will be interesting to see if the Northern teams would somewhat give a challenge to the champ.

Maybe France could be a threat to SA. However, France has to be well prepaired because if they don't pay attention, they are gonna be run over by the SA powerhouse (and also kicking game!)

Any comments on which team could pose some problems to the boks?

Also, that was at the beginning of the game. How could it have meant that SA didn't win?!

I love reading back through these comments, all these proud Bok fans... Your right, you did conquer the rugby world in 2009!

But now its back to reality, the AB's are back to being number 1, the 7's is ours, the tri-nations is ours and another unbeaten northern tour last year.

Sorry Bok but you had your year, now for the AB's to have another 10!
