Jonathan Davies big tackle against Leinster

Young Welsh centre Jonathan Davies made this fantastic tackle against Leinster in the Heineken Cup on the weekend as his side, the Scarlets, went down 32-7 at home.

You can watch the highlights of the match here if you haven't already. There were some great tries scored as Leinster got off to a flyer, going 22-0 up early on.

Scarlets came back with a great try to Davies, who at times seems to be referred to as Jon, which helps to avoid mix-ups when pundit, commentator, and former Wales player Jonathan Davies is around.

Jon powered through the defence, evading at least three tacklers on his way to the tryline. He showed the same power later in the match, as he picked up and drove Leinster flanker Kevin McLaughlin back a good few metres.

You can't help but think back to another Welsh centre lifting up and carrying back his opposition a few years back. On that day it was Gavin Henson, and it was a young Englishman he imposed himself on, not an Irishman.

Davies seems to be the real deal, and perhaps it won't be long before we see him in action for his country as a regular starter. He replaced Shanklin for the final Test of the Autumn Internationals against Australia, and will no doubt feature strongly in the upcoming Six Nations.

  • HUGE HIT....not too much impact but I bet the guy was confused after a few seconds as he was still in the air. ha ha.

  • I've honestly never seen a tackle quite like this. I've always wondered why this isn't done a bit more often. Is there any limit to how long you can carry a player back in a tackle?

  • Love it. Another great one in these archives is the Scott Quinell one where he flings the guy round about three times like a rag doll!

  • ^^ it was scotts younger brother, gavin quinell throwing peter richards around like a rag doll.

  • Here's the link to that fling tackle you guys are referring to - Gavin Quinnell vs Peter Richards

  • Nice carry!!! but eh pity he wasnt good for the rest of the game...Scarlets should be banned from playing HCup rugby for the rest of the season on that performance alone.

Any team that gets the run around from that muppet Horgan deserves nothing but a slap in the face by a big wet salmon and a big bag of coal for christmas

  • Did well to look after him in the air too. Still a big hit but nothing dangerous. Good play all round imo.

  • Not a great tackle in my mind, player was able to offload and Leinster were still able to go forward. Give me the likes of the Thomas hit on Skinner anyday

  • Let's hope he doesn't head down the same path as Gav. So far though I'd say he looks promising.

By Blogger Unknown, at December 18, 2009 3:54 pm

  • Haha he got owned.
    Jon Davies still sucks though.

  • Pretty average considering the guy had stopped dead before the tackle and davies was running at him, fair play to run him back a few yards though! But comparing him to henson is a bit silly he already looks like a better more dedicated player than old perma tan

  • Tackles like that break necks, blatant spear tackle. You're supposed to place the player down gently, stroke his hair, then ring his mum to tell her that her son got owned.

To the anonymous (3rd post) the limit to how far you can carry a player back is generally considered to be the end of the pitch, any further e.g. into the crowd/hoardings/out of the ground/back home is frowned upon.

  • What? Actual humour? On Rugby Dump? Hmmm...that's a new development.

Interesting that the player managed to offload, and Leinster went forward anyway.

  • 3rd anonymous, some refs will make an issue due to the fact it 'could be dangerous'

they dont particularly like players being lifted much...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 18, 2009 7:46 pm

  • fudge.......i suggest you watch again, he was only 'stopped dead' because of the hit....

  • Big tackle: Sponsored by Claude Makelele.

By Blogger Bamberio, at December 18, 2009 9:19 pm

  • Sure, Leinster managed to move the ball up field but the tackle forced the kick. Kerney is good and so was this kick, but i reckon he would have kicked even if there had been a guy perfectly positioned to take it and run it back. The tackle forced the turnover.

  • Huge tackle! spelling mistake though, RD has got "will doubt feature strongly in the upcoming six nations".
im presuming theres meant to be a NO in there somewhere:P
thanks for the highlights RD! keep em coming!

  • Hahaha MOD you are my "idol" for the day.

    By Anonymous Abs7, at December 19, 2009 11:51 am

  • doesn't happen often because usually you dont have someone, in this case Heaslip to keep him balanced in the air.
If not it would be probably of been a great dump, as it is he drove him back loads!
I think he's a good player but way too similar to Jamie Roberts, Wales will need someone with a bit more guile and flair alongside Roberts come the Six Nations...

  • geez, Davies has the build of a frickin' tighthead prop! lol
