Wales come back to snatch victory from Scotland

Wales came back from being 24-14 down to snatch a thrilling 31-24 victory against a 13 man Scotland in stoppage time of their Six Nations meeting at the Millennium Stadium.

Wales faced an inspired Scotland who, having not scored a try in their last five Tests, scored two today through John Barclay and Max Evans. Flyhalf Dan Parks put in a stand out performance, as he scored 12 points and controlled matters for the visiting Scots.

Chris Paterson notched up his 100th Test match, but unfortunately picked up an injury that meant he left the field, and along with an injury to Thom Evans, led to a reshuffled Scottish backline.

Prop Allan Jacobsen then got sin-binned for an illegal offence, as did Parks' eventual replacement Phil Godman, so Scotland finished the match with 13 men and a Welsh onslaught, led by Shane Williams, proved too much.

Despite a few bad touches and failing to impose himself earlier in the match, Williams had an inspired last quarter of the match as he first set up a try for Lee Byrne, then played a part in Leigh Halfpenny's seven-pointer.

Wales piled on the pressure and slotted an equalising penalty with less than a minute left on the clock. It was that man Williams though, once again, who proved the difference as he dived over the line with time up on the clock, sealing a dramatic win for the Welsh, crushing Scotland's hopes of a famous win.

  • One of the most insane finishes to a game I've ever seen.

Ospreys v Sale Sharks in the HEC was fairly similar.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 13, 2010 7:14 pm

  • That was crazy!

Don't support Wales or Scotland myself, but found myself on the edge of my seat at the end.

  • My post from the previous video, which really belongs here:

:( what an awful day for me, (as an irish, and scottish supporter!)

Scottish had a fantastic game, but were (i use the term loosely) 'robbed' no one, but the whole welsh team, were to blame, the referee had a great game, and made his intentions clear (warning of yellow's) and Wales capitalised on a 13 man tired scottish team, was very sad for them!

Now on to Ireland, (watching the game now) honestly though, you could never imagine this team was professional, harsh you might say, but really, the errors are school boy errors.....oh, ireland just scored a try.....well anyway....long way to go still! but O'Driscoll is being murdered out there, no room for him......O'Gara...well, even if Morgan Parra (a small player) stopped and asked O'Gara to tackle him, im not sure ronan would be able too.....

I mean, we see in this video Elissalde (No.10) 'avoiding' tackling a charging number 8...which in some ways is clever....no point getting ruined....but O'gara not being able to tackle his opposite number is AWFUL!!!!

Well, Ireland look tired and have less than 14 mins to score 17, possibly 20 points.....which lets face it, i doubt will happen!

Actually, must add, i enjoyed; as much as it pained me, the Scotland Wales game, i thought scotland showed great passion with the running rugby, as well as keeping up their formidable defence!

Well, i'll leave now.....and yeup so far its 17 points ireland need, parra missed!

I will also add that i missed part of the match (where Flannery was a bad lad!)

    what was he thinking??!?

I think scotland should come away from the welsh match feeling very low, BUUUUUT they can take away from the match a fantastic performance for the majority of the game, if they can bring it into the next few games then it should be good!

  • Another neutral viewer here, I've never in my life been on the edge of my seat like that for a game where I had no vested interest. An absolute Hollywood style endind which you wouldn't actually believe in a movie.

No other sport can contain such drama in the final 10 minutes.

    I LOVE RUGBY!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 13, 2010 7:49 pm

  • So good...intense in the last moments of the game

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 13, 2010 8:07 pm

  • Well bloody hell!! As a Wales supporter I'm obviously biased but I've never seen such a tense finish as that.

I somehow managed to punch light hanging from the ceiling when the final try was scored, the bulb smashed, the plastic thing fell off the ceiling and and blood sprayed across the carpet from three cuts I've now got on my hand.

Some really poor rugby by Wales for much of the game but in all honesty, that victory meant more to me than the last grand slam we won.

Really bad news though, Thom Evans has been rushed into hospital with a possible broken back!! :0(

Terrible, terrible news and really hope Thom is OK and of course my thoughts are with his loved ones and family and that's the same for most people on here.

By Anonymous Calon Lan, at February 13, 2010 8:08 pm

  • :( Shane Williams you little bastard!!!!

In all honesty, as much as i am dismayed and disappointed there was some fantastic rugby played throughout, scotland played great rugby for most of the game, and wales finished off the game with some great rushing play!!

Still, Shane Williams you midget pain!!!!

Shame about Thom Evans, lets all hope for him and his family, latest i've heard is he is in a serious condition with a serious injury, his parents are with him. Lets hope he pulls through ok!!

  • p.s i might add before the wrath of the welsh descends on me, that shane williams is a fantastic player, i was starting to think he was lacking a little of recent because he is targeted so quickly, but he proved me wrong today, fantastic play from him ¬_¬ even though he mussssst have cheated somehow!!!!...........well done to wales!

    By Anonymous No.7, at February 13, 2010 8:18 pm

  • what a game!!
scotland did play well and probably did deserve to win but you must applaud the never say die spirit of the welsh , they did the impossible! if we beat france at home which i think we got a good chance at doing (france dont travel very well) and an expected home win over italy , we can go over to ireland with a lot of confidence maybe with a chance of the championship!

    By Anonymous welshno7, at February 13, 2010 8:41 pm

  • No 7
i was starting to think he was lacking a little of recent

To be fair, he's been lacking quite a bit over the past year or so. When it's working for him the rugby looks so natural but he's struggling he tries far too hard and it's a horrible thing to watch.

I think he knows that he doesn't have that long left in the international team and that he has to perform to keep his place which perhaps he didn't have to do so much in the past.

When he is on form though there's nobody else I'd rather have there as he has a nice habit of scoring and creating tries.

I think he usually struggles when the rest of the team are as he's having to take on players who are pretty much twice his size on his own.

I wouldn't worry about upsetting people though! :0)

I personally can't stand Andy Powell but I think that's the same for most people in Wales who aren't called Warren.

  • Was one of the worst performances by Wales I have seen. The sheer number of errors was just appalling. Much as it pains me to say it, Scotland deserved that win from their first half performance. However, the match isnt over until the ref says it is and no one knows that better than the Welsh it seems. Some might say that they got lucky with the yellow cards, I'd have to say that the ref gave more than enough warnings to both sides, Scotland made the errors in the end which resulted in yellows and Wales capitalised on that with a passion. A truly beautiful ending to an otherwise dreadful performance by Wales.

By Anonymous Tom, at February 13, 2010 9:10 pm

  • Brilliant game, although i wasnt so sure about the footy style dive by bryne!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 13, 2010 9:42 pm

  • Exactly, i am a scottish fan, and you can theoretically say that scotland deserved the win, but if a team wins all that counts is the W next to the name.....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 13, 2010 9:47 pm

  • what was with godmans headband thing? it looked very odd....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 13, 2010 10:12 pm

  • Why the hell didn't Scotland kick that last kickoff straight into touch? The clock was already well pas 80min, so arguably the kickoff shouldn't have taken place, but it did. Realistically, a 13-man scotland were never going to win the ball back and score again, so shouldn't they just have booted it straight out?

By Anonymous HM, at February 13, 2010 10:17 pm

  • INSANE ENDING. jonathon davies commentary at the end was hilarious he was so pumped up. Well done Wales and shane williams but my heart really went out to the scots, they deserved better.

By Anonymous David, at February 13, 2010 10:25 pm

  • Shane williams was awesome.
Set up two tries and scored the winner.
Brilliant stuff but scotland deserved to win.

By Anonymous WelshOsprey, at February 13, 2010 10:37 pm

  • UNBELIEVABLE! what an ending:)
Fair play to the scots you were immense! Just lucky that the prop lost his mind!
and calon lan, i think shanes fought for his place over the last 6 years enough to know when to perform:P lol graham henry wasent his biggest fan:P
anyways:) thank god for the win today! a lot of luck involved though.

  • the replacement hooker lawson was sin binned not jacobson but there is now way that scotland deserved to lose. even with the ref allowing wales forward passes from offloads and cooper knocking on countless time at the base of the ruck never mind his complete lack on knowledge at scrum time. i am so angry that we were cheated out of this win

By Anonymous angry, at February 14, 2010 12:27 am

  • I was at the stadium, and the Jocks sitting in the row in front of me left 8 minutes early so they could get a good spot in the pub to celebrate. Would have loved to have been there to see them go to take the piss out of the bar staff, only to find out that their team had actually lost! Wonderful from Wales, and almost moving to see Shane so emotional.

By Anonymous The Schpoople Master, at February 14, 2010 1:13 am

  • Yellow cards are deadly this year, tough luck for the Scots they really deserved the win

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2010 1:13 am

Rubbish, i am a scottish fan and you are either a sour grape filled scotsman who knows nothing about the game, or just someone trying to stir up trouble.

Scotland yes deserved the win right up until about 70 mins, when they took their foot off the gas, and wales took over......i mean, really didnt wales put in the more admirable effort?

Anyway, the referee said to cusiter, tell your team, any more and there will be cards....so scotland had the warnings, and in all honesty its surprising a card didnt come sooner.... I was highly depressed by the result, i really thought we'd done it, but it was remarkable from wales!

So anyway welsh fans, im glad to see you are commenting on scotlands performance, and congratulations, please dont let one comment lead to an endless amount of internet tough talk!

  • I felt like crying at the end of this. There were just too many injuries. Even the catburglar from the Simpsons wouldn't have been able to pull off such a heist. Poor Scotland.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2010 4:19 am

  • I'm Welsh and the Welsh got the luckiest result ever! Warren Gatland said it perfectly when he said Wales made some odd decisions like taking the 3 points instead of going for another scrum when the Scottish were down to 13 men. Or when Stephen Jones kicked it when he had 3 men outside him and a certain overlap. So despite these things, as well as playing the lamest 70 minutes of rugby, Wales won.

    Poor, poor Scotland.

Immense performance from the Scots, let's hope they take this type of performance to England for the full 80 minutes. Scottish rugby is getting back to strength!

  • Couldn't believe it, had 20 quid on the draw at full time. Missed out on earning myself quite a bit of cash.

    What a game.

  • @angry

You're not the only angry one mate, but everyone else is angry at the scottish players for blowing a lead in the most ridiculous fashion possible. I saw one missed knockon by cooper in the last passage of play (on the Welsh left 15m line, and around halfway), but realistically, any team that gets two sinbinnings at once, especaially at the end of the game when everyones shagged out, deserves to lose. I still want to see a replay of the 'trip' because it looked very much accidental to me, and Andy Robinson agrees.

By Anonymous HM, at February 14, 2010 9:48 am

  • When williams plays like that hes really a league above other wingers. Such an intelligent player.
Not gonna make a big fuss but we deserved it more than wales -.-

By Anonymous BB, at February 14, 2010 10:07 am

  • I, along with many other welshmen will agree that Scotland were unlucky. But am relieved that we got the Win.
Where did that 70 minutes of play come from though. I didn't have Scotland down for that level of intensity at all and fair play, have proved a lot to any critics out there.
Any thoughts on the selection of the Welsh team against France?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2010 12:07 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2010 1:47 pm

  • I wanted Scotland to win BTW

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2010 1:48 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2010 3:26 pm

  • From a neutral view, I wanted a Scotland, david vs goliath syndome :)
Scottish deserved far more than welsh. They played and defended like never during 70 minutes. But these 2 yellow cards really killed them.
I'm a bit annoyed by the 2nd yellow card, as Byrne is famous for being a bit football-diver...

Shane williams is still this incredible mighty scorer!)

By Blogger Flooz, at February 14, 2010 4:16 pm

  • Byrne is a faggot that was obvious diving

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2010 6:22 pm

  • Jonathan Davies' commentary at the end - only goes to highlight what a completely un-neutral commentator he is. You could hear him screaming in the background...

By Anonymous Dave, at February 14, 2010 6:34 pm

  • Dave > Everyone was screaming you tool. Did you expect him to sit there quietly (even if that is him in the background) and say, "oh my, what a jolly good ending there chaps".

If you want dull lifeless commentary, watch rugby on Sky Sports.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2010 7:06 pm

  • Dave, I agree. He was moaning like a little girl for the entire match when Wales were losing. Unbiased commentry now seems to be a given for the BBC. Certainly for the last couple of years the commentary has been leaning heavily towards England, with the majority of build-up concentrating on them and then post-match analysis focusing almost entirely on them (even when they were playing another home nation). I think the BBC need to remember what the first B in BBC stands for and sort out their commentary team, especially in a time when everyone wants to be seen to be praising Bill McLaren for his impartiality. Andrew Cotter and Keith Wood are about the only ones I can think of that take an impartial stance and its actually making me fed up of the game.

By Anonymous JPM, at February 14, 2010 7:52 pm

  • Why do people say JD is biased? He's the first to criticise Wales, and did so throughout the game yesterday, not to mention he was forever praising Dan Parks and eventually handed him the MOTM award.

Stop whining you little football fan turds.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2010 8:47 pm

  • The more I watch that incident (why the FUCK didn't you give us a replay BBC?), the more I agree with Robinson that it's just the Scottish player (?Godman?) jumping to go for a chargedown. Byrne at best got caught in the crossfire, at worst dived like a nancyballer...

Cusiter was cheating like a lil shit throughout the whole game too, I'm surprised a yellow didn't come earlier.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2010 9:55 pm

  • Byrne got a penalty that eventually led to them winning a game. You'd be stupid NOT to milk it in that situation.
    Sour grapes gents.

By Anonymous Willis, at February 14, 2010 10:11 pm

  • JPM there is a difference between "tripping" which is deliberate....i.e. sticking your leg out deliberately with intent.....and incidental contact.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2010 10:31 pm

  • " Willis said...

Byrne got a penalty that eventually led to them winning a game"

He was about to get a certain try that would have won the game there and then, diving would be pointless. Definite try to win, or 3 point pen to draw, no brainer.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 14, 2010 10:40 pm

  • I don't think anyone's claiming Byrne didn't trip.

However, Godman definitely jumped up to try and block/catch the chip. It looked like his leg clipped Byrne's on the way down. In the heat of the moment, if you can react instinctively to a chip, jump up and have the composure to deliberately stick your leg into the way of an oppostition player that you're probably not looking at (because you're looking for the ball), then I'm fucking impressed. Of course, I could be wrong, and Godman could have made a concious decision that 3 points are better than 7.

Also, if it was a penalty, surely it was a penalty try? Seemed like a pretty certain try to me... Maybe not.

And to the dickwad above that had a problem with it being Reese not Peel at 9 for the Welsh at the end, who gives a flying fuck? I was watching the rugby, and the players on the pitch don't really matter to me, and it doesn't make any different to the incidents on the pitch, so kindly go fuck yourself.

By Anonymous HM, at February 14, 2010 11:42 pm

  • im sorry, but all these 'biased' commentators you mention, brian moore, jonathan davies etc.....they have played for their own countries, its expected that they want their country to win each match....but like someone has mentioned they are also the first to criticise their team!! im gd they are biased, it adds spice to the game.....

and to all the welsh fans try and read into what people are saying, no one is claiming wales should offer a rematch, its called post game analysis, can you honestly say hand on hearts that byrne did not dive what so ever??!? no i dont think so, and the scots fans cant say the other way........but it would be interesting to see again!

  • Anonymous.

Yes, Wales would get a scrum, but there was no time and the ref would have blown up - if time's up, you continue for a penalty and for a lineout if you kick the penalty to touch, but a straight scrum would end the game.

I think the ref let the kickoff happen because the preceding conversion was kicked within the 80 minutes.

By Anonymous HM, at February 15, 2010 2:22 pm

  • 'for your info, if you boot the kickoff straight out to touch wales get a scrum at the halfway line which they will murder scotland with 13 man'

Ball is out of play, which means new play will have to ensue, no time for new play = game over....

so therefore scotland would have won.....fyi

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 15, 2010 2:25 pm

  • @anonymous

It would have been a draw. But still, the chances of scotland winning and keeping the ball for long enough to get a dropgoal were slim to none with 13 men.

By Anonymous HM, at February 15, 2010 3:11 pm

  • no way was that a trip. why would byrne fall when he was heading for the the line with the possibility of a garanteed a try. and yes wales were very lucky somtimes you get lucky thats the way sport is. scotland did play very well and were dominant for the first 3 quarters of the game and if it had stayed that way they would have won the game. but they took there foot off the gas in the last 15 minuets and wales had the rugby flare and the passion to go for the glory and win the game. THIS IS RUGBY

By Anonymous Anonymous, at February 15, 2010 3:57 pm

  • The second sending off was a very bad decision; fact. The welsh have long been imitating footballers with their hair cut's but now it seems to have passed on down to their legs because that was a dive and or a huge milking of a very slight accidental contact. It did cost the Scots the game. But - you Scots did turn up to the England / austarlia World Cup Final all those years ago wearing Gold shirts. So suffer and suffer hard.

By Blogger morgan, at February 15, 2010 4:22 pm

  • It wasn't a certain try when Byrne was tripped at all, he still had to beat the fullback just in front of him.. so dunno what game you were watching.

I'm glad Wales won though, whether he was deliberatly tripped or not.

  • Calon Lan, I have seen such a tense finish before... RWC '07 when the Fijians sent you home. Oh how I chuckled.

What a cracking game though and fair play to the Welsh for fighting to the death. Top class entertainment for what I honestly believe is the best tournament in the world. I lost count of the number of football types at work talking about how good this game was, albeit there was a theme of only seeing the last 25 minutes. There must have been a break in transmissions of the polyester clad hollywood diving fairies...

  • A few childish comments on here have got things getting a bit heated i think!

As a proud welshman I never thought I would feel more sorry for the losing side than feeling happy for wales winning...but I did. When shane went over i didn't even make a fuss. Absolutely gutted for the scots because they were better than us for 70 odd minutes.

Well done to the welsh boys for coming back like that, incredible finish, but if we play like that against france and ireland we will get killed. There were one or two border line forward passes from us and lee byrne as has rightly been said is renowned for being a football pansy so Scotland can rightly feel hard done by.

Well done wales for coming back but we need to improve big time.

Commiserations to scotland, all the best in the rest of the six nations.

Also i spoke to a couple of Scots players in Cardiff after the match, they seem like very decent blokes.

  • re: Geraint said...

Very cool headed and balanced view. Thank you Geraint. COuldnt agree more on the fwd passes, plus the 2 minutes leading up to the penultimate Wales try, there were no less than 4-5 occasions where Welsh players were offiside by 5+ metres, running ahead of the carrier or not even trying to retreat.

I found it interesting that the ref did not make a single offside call throughout the whole game, which wasnt centred around the breakdown. Poor reffing tbh.
