Clint Newland unleashes on Pek Cowan in Queenstown
With the current demand for highlights from various tournaments, there seems to be little time left for short clips these days. Summaries of matches are all good and well, but RD isn’t a highlights channel after all, so let’s take a look at something a bit different now that some of you might enjoy seeing.
The Highlanders played the Force in picturesque Queenstown on the weekend in what was a rare day game in the Super 14, the first and only in New Zealand this year in fact.
It was close up until the 70th minute, but the 11th and 13th placed sides only had pride to play for and it was the Force who came to the party in front of the 5000 fans on hand at the Queenstown Events Centre.
The Highlanders did score an excellent consolation try, but the 41-27 win for the Force was described by smiling captain Nathan Sharpe as ‘strange’.
In the first half the front rowers kicked off with monster Clint Newland of the Highlanders and Pek Cowan of the Force having a full go. It didn’t last long, but it’s pretty rare to see any punches thrown in a match these days, let alone a barrage of them.
The best part of the incident, and perhaps the reason for posting it, would be the two pumped up players leaving the field bickering, side by side, then having to spend the next ten minutes sitting next to one another.
We'll hopefully have more amusing clips for you soon, but keep sending the requests in. While some clips may not be possible to get, others will definitely be looked at and if all goes well, posted here on the site.

'i wanna roll with him a hot pair we will be.....i don't give a crap bout whales so go and hug a tree!'
great song....
Cowan deserved getting clocked! but i suppose you cant have players taking the laws into their own hands...10 minutes to cool off seems pretty reasonable....
i guess its better that way than keeping them on and having a brawl ensue!

Fantastic, thanks RD!
Hilarious... and why does this only happen to props?
Does anyone have the Peter Clohessy waterbotle link? Clohessy got binned along with the opposition prop,a couple of years back, against the French, I think. When they walked to the sidelines, Clohessy sprayed water on the other prop. That was great stuff, as well!

whoaaa!
what a first punch!
Should've hurt, but the little prop didn't move.

Cripes Newland is a monster! Cowan did well to take the first punch!

Bloody lads. The first scrum back on must have been interesting.

The reason why rugby is the best sport: one second they are throwing punches, two minutes later they are sitting side-by-side and laughing.

I don't understand why they sat together. Don't players normally go sit with their other teammates.

It's a small stadium in a regional area and doesn't have the facilities of a bigger stadium.
Basically they just put a few platic chairs on the sideline and that's the sin bin.

Huge men, huge punches. The biff is back! Thanks RD!

Like so much indiscipline it starts with horrid refereeing... why on earth is that scrum allowed to continue after the front rows have popped up? Players tempers often seem to flare when they feel they're in a dangerous situation - and a scrum like that is dangerous.
Poor refereeing.
Great clip.

They did look like they got it out of their system when they eventually sat down...
i mean, i could be wrong....cowan said the first words when they sat down...they could have been 'ive shat on you all day long..'
but to me it looked like more of a chuckle...

This is brilliant!!
By vinniechan, at April 15, 2010 5:57 pm
Coming to think of it, this is perhaps the best bin ever.
By vinniechan, at April 15, 2010 6:00 pm
This's like when Peter Clohessy was squirting water at some French lad in the sin bin straight after a fight!
By Der Tierarzt, at April 16, 2010 12:49 am
This is why I love rugby, one minute they punch on, next their laughing about it.
Holligans game played by gentleman

I think one reason they were chatting happily on the sideline was because Cowen knew he'd been a dick and Newland knew he'd over-reacted; and basically, if each side is a man light, you haven't really let your team-mates down.
But come on folks, it was still a little tame compared to the fisticuffs of yore - I'm thinking some of the old Free State-Northern Transvaal barneys, the battles of Boet Erasmus etc. I do miss some of that.
By edbok, at April 16, 2010 4:14 pm
