The Rugby Club Plays of the Week - Bam Bam!

The Fox Sports Plays of the Week today focus on two things in particular. First up, it’s the discarded Drew Mitchell and the great try he scored this past weekend. The focus then turns to the Tri Nations, and a preview ahead of the big match in a few days time.

The Mitchell issue is an interesting one as he was written off by the Rugby Club pundits last week after some poor Wallaby performances. He then showed them up by scoring a fantastic solo try for Randwick against Sydney University in the Shute Shield.

Today though, he was surprisingly axed from the Wallaby squad for the Tri Nations, along with fellow winger Lachie Turner. Coach Robbie Deans has said that he wants to look at a few players and how they perform in club rugby.

Mitchell will naturally want to continue with his try scoring feats if he wants to join his mates in one of the toughest competitions on the planet. The Tri Nations kicks off this weekend as holders South Africa take on the All Blacks in Auckland.

The Rugby Club looks back at some of the finer moments from last year and then profiles a few players that need to be watched in the 2010 edition. Namely Pierre Spies for the Boks, Ma’a Nonu for the AB’s, and David Pocock for the Wallabies.

  • Bam Bam! Quality player. The other two aren't half bad either.

Oh and that Drew Mitchell try, wow

  • whys nonu dragging that frenchmen?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 08, 2010 10:33 pm

  • i think that nonu was trying to get heymans to stand up,as he(nonu) thought he(heymans) was faking an injury

  • Spies does the 100m in 10.7? He's pretty fast, but I dunno about that. That's an incredible for 110kg. Maybe it was a hand-timed 100m.

Also, he doesn't bench press a car. Or at least not the whole thing. The world record raw bench press is about 315kg. Anyone who benches 300kg+ also uses AAS and trains specifically to bench. A family sedan (think they said that) would weigh at least a ton.

Maybe they were just exaggerating his stats.

  • cant believe they dropped mitchell, did they see a different super14 season alltogether?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 08, 2010 11:05 pm

  • Club rugby runs are fun to watch, impressive even, but do not lead to an improved rating on a player.

Bam Bam's highlights were ordinary to say the least.

Nonu is one of the most underrated players around.

Anonymous I think you need a course in sarcasm and exaggeration.

  • "Nonu is one of the most underrated players around."

Really? Who underrates him? I think the fact that he's got almost 50 caps for the ABs says enough, huh?

By Anonymous shaka, at July 09, 2010 12:15 am

  • More wonderfully one-sided reporting from The Criminal Element! I do feel sorry for Fox Sports this year though! They're going to have a devil of a time trying to find good highlights packages from the Crooks this 3N season. It's not gonna be fun viewing for any Aussie, watching Smitty and King Richie work that wooden spoon up their team's arse. Bokke and ABs all the way!!

  • "whys nonu dragging that frenchmen?"

Nonu hit the frenchman with a late tackle (after a kick), and then the frenchman started to flop around on the floor like a fish. So Nonu was trying to pull him to his feet

  • Anonymous I think you need a course in sarcasm and exaggeration.

Why? I've heard the 100m in 10.7 seconds before and about the 1.4m vertical leap. And strength feats such as bench pressing are made seriously all the time, but are always misleading.

  • "Maybe they were just exaggerating his (Spies) stats"

I think they're just poking fun at how often South African journalists tell us (the rugby public) how fast, strong, tall, heavy, skilled, brillant... etc he is.

And for all the South African rugby supporters out there let me be the first one to say
We all get it, you think he is a very good rugby player. Can you stop with the stats and superlatives now?

Looking forward to the Tri-Nations, its going to be a fun few weeks

By Anonymous Craig, at July 09, 2010 12:37 am

  • bam bam is barney's son, not fred.

he might be adopted or maybe that was just in the movie.

By Anonymous miguel, at July 09, 2010 1:13 am

  • They were joking, obviously he can't bench press a car.
He can do the 100m in 10.7 sec, that's his PB though. He used to be a winger a long time ago I believe, because he's so quick.
But yes, he really is that fast.
And Aussies respect Spies, he's a very good player, none of this whinging about how he isn't that great like British fans.
    And Bokk-2007, are bloody kidding.
It's a breif gag segment on an Australian tv show.
Why the hell would they want to talk about the bloody South Africans all the time?

By Anonymous Jono, at July 09, 2010 1:31 am

  • Good on Nonu for trying to drag Haeymans to his feet.
Bloody Heyamns, rolling around like some pansy soccer player, clutching his face.
This is not soccer Heymans, get up and play on, you girl.

Spies is a best of an athlete... But there is no way he runs 100m in 10.7... Anesi (not that quick anymore) ran him down last year with ease.

  • Astonishing maturity on show here once more! Clearly some people can't handle the banter. The footy show is always a good laugh even with their comments about Nonu looking "mean". I wonder if they know about the mascara... As for Bam Bam Pocock, that kid's got a massive future in the game. can't wait to see him up against Tackles McCaw and Flo.

  • What's the plural of dufus? Cause there's a whole bunch of them commenting on this one. Dufus's maybe? Of course it was sarcasm about the car! The guy is a monster. It wasn't meant as an insult or a jibe at anyone, it was simply stating that Spies is incredibly impressive.

They also called him and Bekker giraffe's last week. I don't think that was to be over-analysed either..

And lol @ Ryan. Bokke_2007, you've been told. Watch your words or they'll come back to.. spank you :P

that headbutt by nonu is just pure stupidity, the ball was long gone

  • Just think that Pocock´s story is pretty amazing. As a 12 year old he slept with a knife under his pillow to, in case necessary, help his dad if they would attack the farm in Zimbabwe.
He might or might not be the best find for rugby (personally I think he is already a great player) but for me that is beside the point. His life story shows perseverance and endurance and if he keeps applying that to his game he will get better year by year (and will end up as a well respected player to say the least).
Spies is awesome but still has a possibility to improve. Speed and strength-wise there a few players (can't think of any to be honest) that come close but Parisse showed in the first test against de Bokke that he is not the finished article yet. No doubt however he will get there. Good attitude and hard work can get you really, really far if you're as talented as he is.
My money is on the Bokke as they have been together a long time. AB are stepping up to the plate but I think they are finishing building their 2011 squad. Aussies...? Sorry for them but I don't see them coming close.
Will be good fun though and after suffering a month of disproportionate attention in the office about the wendyball Worldcup (I am dutch living in Spain, please bear with me) I am really looking forward to see some guys play a real sport.

By Anonymous Bart, at July 09, 2010 12:49 pm

  • It's the depth to the Bok squad which is scary, no other team has that. The Aussies will get ripped if they don't have a decent tight 5. Whats the deal with the front row for the 3 nations?

By Anonymous Nick, at July 09, 2010 1:04 pm

  • Anon dont be a dumb shit, Spies does run in 10.7 that's why he burns most international wingers and he does do a vertical 1.7m leap. The Australian was obviously being sarcastic about him benching a car though. Fuck you're dumb.

I'm not being dumb. I have lived in America for years and played football where the numbers are everything.

I assume the 100m was hand-timed. Hand-timed sprints can be grossly inaccurate which is why electronic timing is now used. Spies would be up there with the fastest athletes in the NFL right now, which I doubt.

Also, Spies's vertical leap is 1.4m I think (55 inches). Nobody in the NBA can do over 50 inches. The best vertical leaps in the NBA are over 40 inches and only some can do this.

And about the car thing, I've been into weight training since I've been a teen and people claim all the time that they can bench a car (and they mean it). They generally don't mention that they only presses one axle with the other on the ground of a mini or something like that.

  • Explains alot. American = sense of humour failure. If you type in spies on YouTube there is a video of the huge leap in evidence. Great video, brilliant as always rugbydump keep em' comin.

  • KB - you're taking things way to literally. Firstly, you obviously dont know how the usual Plays of the Week go on there. ie: banter/pisstakes/exaggeration etc
I cant be bothered with a secondly.. it's just a bit of fun. It's not serrrrrious.

Bakkies Botha though, he can bench a school bus, and Tony Buckley is known to lift small aeroplanes on the weekend for fun.

By Anonymous Benson, at July 09, 2010 2:12 pm

  • Bart, btw, leaving the chaos of Zim for the perfect land of Aus has nothing to do with perseverance, and everything to do with his parents getting the family the hell out of there to give them a better life.
    SA's loss is Australia's gain.

By Anonymous Benson, at July 09, 2010 2:16 pm

  • So leaving everything behind and starting from scratch in new country and making something out of it has nothing to do with perseverance, character or endurance? That can all be narrowed down to ´getting the hell out of there´. I tend to overcomplicate things I guess…. Sorry if that's the case.
He is definitely no ordinary 22 year old. Not when it comes to his rugby abilities neither when it comes to his life story. That was my point I tried to get across
Definetely Australia's gain. Absolutely agree on that

Sorry, I should have mentioned I've heard these claims outside of this video (bar the car one, which is often made seriously) which is why I am taking them seriously. There's no need to boost the stats of a good player.

Explains alot. American = sense of humour failure. If you type in spies on YouTube there is a video of the huge leap in evidence.

And I have watched as many Spies vids as I can find. They actually suggest that he does not have a 10.7 second 100m time, although they do show that he is quite fast.

And I am not American. If you read carefully, you'll see that I said I lived in America. Learn to read my friend, then try slinging the stereotypes (where they actually apply).

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 09, 2010 6:34 pm

  • Just a bit of banter boss that was all ;) all the sane, an incredible player; let's hope he gets some space and possesion in the tri-nations and we'll see what he can do.

By Anonymous The Schpoople Master, at July 09, 2010 11:24 pm

  • Rugby sprint times are always exaggerated in rugby forums. To give some perspective 10.68 was the 10th fastest time in SA last year. http://www.athletics.org.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=73&Itemid=85

Although i realise that the Rugby Club is just banter, these claims (other than the car one) are not uncommon, they are not just about spies and they are not the exclusive purview of the The Rugby Club or some other banterous show - look at the web for claims about the speed of some wingers.

You'll see the web filled with nonsesne claims about sprint times. 'Spies ran a 10.70' - sure on a 96m grass track, downhill, with an 8m wind behind him and his dad doing the timing on his analogue wristwatch.

These times are so ridiculous that you needn't compare them to NFL and basketball stats. They are an exaggeration even in the world of pure track and field (as i think the above link shows). Anyone who has done any vaguely serious athletics knows that you can't get close to these times without dynamic training on starting alone.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 11, 2010 3:24 pm

  • Supposedly he ran that time some years ago, when he was younger and did alot of track. He was a winger at one point.
he couldn't run that now, it was his PB.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 12, 2010 1:04 am

  • I think that you are kidding yourself if you think that Spies was anywhere near the top 10 fastest people in SA at any time in his life.

Everyone has times that they used to run. Notably they are never official, which means lies or runs timed under dubious conditions.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at July 12, 2010 1:36 pm

  • You guys have gotta relax....it's all just a pisstake. Pierre Spies can not bench press a family sedan..I made that up.
