ITM Cup in New Zealand - Highlights from Round 8

The ITM Cup heads into another round of action as we near the weekend, so its time to catch up with the tries and highlights from Round 8. The feedback has been pretty positive, so here’s another enjoyable ten minute package of tries and highlights.

Southland continued their good run as they beat Waikato 7-6 in a hard fought, low scoring match in Hamilton. Kendrick Lynne crossed for another try, the only one of the match. Stephen Donald came on for Waikato and had two chances to win the game, but missed both.

Auckland also occupy a top three slot as they beat Manawatu 32-6, scoring a bonus point in the process. Taranaki upset Canterbury 31-20 in one of the games of the weekend, with some wonderful tries scored by both sides.

Wellington got a 17-13 win over Hawkes Bay in another game that had some sensational tries scored. The first went to Hawkes Bay’s Kahn Fotuali’i, possibly the team try of the weekend, but Hosea Gear showed his pace and power again as he scored a great try of his own. He then also set up Lima Sopaga, who finished superbly.

North Harbour came good over Tasman, winning 28-21, while Otago and Northland battled it out at Dunedin, with Rene Ranger doing his bit to help set up the winning try for captain Jared Payne. Final score in that one, 13-8.

Another classic was Bay of Plenty’s 24-21 win over Counties Manukau on Sunday, as they came back from being 14-0 down to get themselves back in the game and eventually score late to sneak the win.

  • I agree this is some of the best rugby i've seen

  • some quality tries even though some parts could be shown better on another camera angle maybe :)

  • awesome stuff

  • Thank god Sonny Bill isn't aiming for being the AB's fullback...

  • Hosea Gear, what a beast.

I hate that Henrys little pet Rok's gets a spot over him, its a fuckin joke.

  • sorry that was a bit harsh, Joe has done alot of NZ rugby... But the whole favourites game really gets under my skin.

It makes me wonder how much better NZ could be if they picked the team on form, not just reputation.

  • Mmmm, seeing a couple of Sonny Bill's weaknesses here!!

  • Some great running rugby in there. You can see why NZ produce so many great players.

  • Joe Roks scored the same number of tries as Hosea Gear in the Super 14, 9 each. so they were actually both in good form and GH naturally went with the more experienced of the two. The fact that he's not scoring as much for the ABs shows how much better defense is at that level.

By Anonymous Common Sense, at September 24, 2010 6:05 am

  • then again, roks had some real shocker seasons before that whilst gear was carving up yet gear still didnt get picked. Gear has the xfactor that roks has lost, they should give him and ranger a proper shot on the EOYT (starting most games, not just one offs in the second team) if they dont cut the mustard then we can still fall back to the tried and true before next years june tests>

  • Sorry guys, I don't agree, this is not the best rugby in the world, for me.
Quality tries, for sure, but also in a lot of cases poor defence.
Look at the Top14's Top10s that are posted for each week, for me there are really more best tries than here...

  • no magners round up from last weekend. I know there is a requests thread in the forum but I just thought it would be a given

  • Seb, if ten tries from here were put together and shown in a flashy format, they would also give a great impression each week. Both are excellent tournaments with great standards

  • ITM Cup has to be one of the greatest comp in the world. The other day I was reading Stephen jones column about the new rules he said
"the new rules are killing rugby and turning it into touch rugby spectacle that has taken mauling, scrumming out of the game it's making it a lot harder to gain turn overs"
Well, he must have not been watching Southland's epic win over Auckland in the Ranfurly shield challenge on thursday. The defense in that game was top notch, a good old forward battle. You can play a tight style if you have the tight 5 to do the dirty work. You can create turn overs if you win the collision at the breakdown so there is no excuses when people call Richie Macaw a cheat cos he wouldn't be their if your team won the collision and smash him out of the way. That is the only reason why the rugby is faster the forwards are giving the backs quality ball. Just my opinion.

  • Pfft "Roks had a shocker whilst gear was carving up" whatever. That was the season where the Boks were putting bombs up like nobodys business. The only player in NZ whose game that would of suited was Cory Jane, but wait a minute thats right the coaches already selected him...

Hmm maybe elite professional coaches know more about the game than you?

By Anonymous Common Sense, at September 24, 2010 11:50 am

  • I agree its all about winning the collision BUT Richie still a cheat!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 24, 2010 12:06 pm

  • Still think Hosea Gear should be in that AB squad - someone posted the other day that his defence was weak but I haven't noticed in the few games I have managed to see him in...

    Is it true?

By Anonymous NiWiTa, at September 24, 2010 2:09 pm

  • Hosea Gears defense is fine and it is no big deal that he is not in the squad yet. he is young and Roks is leaving after the WC, that will be his time to shine. He knows this, wouldn't be surprised if the coaches have told him directly. As it is though anyone can figure it out cos roks is only on a 1 year contract.

By Anonymous Common Sense, at September 25, 2010 12:41 am

  • considering those same elite coaches are the same ones who were coaching during the 07 shambles im not sure theyre as faultess as you are trying to make out.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 25, 2010 12:58 pm

  • and it wasnt just his all black performances i was talking about, his S14 performances were also well below par.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 25, 2010 1:01 pm

  • We just established that they had the EXACT SAME super 14 stats...

    sheesh slow learner.

I understand you're a huge Hosea fan boy but he really doesn't have enough selling points to justify a place over either Roks, Dagg, Sivi, Cory, Ranger or Toeava.

Whats done is done. If you want to cry please do so privately.

By Anonymous Common Sense, at September 25, 2010 2:17 pm

  • and youve obviously got the jollies for roks. its fairly clear that henry has a soft spot for rocokoco and instead of picking on form hes picking on reputation, their are plenty of guys that are playing phenomenally this year that havnt been picked. Hosea ripped some very good teams to shreds in the maori games this year and deserves a shot. simple as that.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 26, 2010 12:23 am

  • Ripping the NZ C-team as well as the Irish and English C-teams to shreds is awesome as ay. I love rewarding mediocrity. While we're at it lets naturalise Rocky Elsom and make him our captain. I wouldn't mind Peter De Villiers as our coach as well. Maybe Frank Bainimarama could replace John Key?

By Anonymous Bazz, at September 26, 2010 6:28 am

  • rockoco has scored what one or 2 tries this season for the AB's in games that should suit his style with quite a few blow out scores, how is that not mediocre.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at September 26, 2010 10:42 am

  • This is the compeition that produces the All Blacks.
Of course it's better then the T14.
