Blue Bulls' Derick Kuun cited for striking Bismarck du Plessis below the belt

This past weekend seems to have been less eventful than the previous in terms of citings, but there was one for Blue Bulls flank Derick Kuun following an altercation for Sharks hooker Bismarck du Plessis in the Currie Cup semi final in Durban.

The game started late thanks to the infamous Beegate debacle, but it didn’t lack any sting as the rain came down and things got quite heated in the second half.

As you’ll see in the clip, Du Plessis – who’s never far from the action – tried to get the ball back from Kuun after being awarded a penalty, but things got out of hand with Kuun striking out at the fiery Bok hooker.

Whether it was in fact a punch or an open hand push remains to be seen as the cameras didn’t pick it up very well. It seemed to hit the spot though as Du Plessis got that delayed reaction then ended up on the floor.

Kuun has since been cited for foul play under law 10.4 (a) for striking. He was due to appear in front of a SARU judiciary committee earlier today, but that’s now been postponed till Friday for an unknown reason.

  • I'd like to punch you in the balls you twat! BOOM - First that, ha.

Damn that is not great, do love how it took a couple of seconds for the paid to hit his stomach then he dropped!

Should be a 52 week ban for striking someones crown jewels...as bad as an eye gouge. ha ha

  • Wow - who knew that Bismarck has testicles? :)

  • That's a bit harsh Mike. And no, we still don't know for certain. Maybe after the punch he doesnt?

Quite a strange and funny little incident there. It didn't seem to be a full force punch but as we all know (the guys anyway), 'you don't give a man a shot in the pills... it's just not cricket!'

  • i think its a bit disapointing to see him drop so late after its almost like he was looking to draw attention to it in the same way a footballer would

  • sometimes it takes a few seconds to come up...shudder...

  • Funny how you can take a direct whack to the area (especially if wearing a 'cup') and it's no problem, but another time you take a minor bump and it's agonising. I'll fault no man for going down after a slap on the nads.

  • Super gay.

By Anonymous OspreysExile, at October 19, 2010 9:37 pm

  • sure he didn't mean to hit him there.
just fought back as the two were draging him to the floor.

  • I understand what people are on about with regard to it not looking much, but most guys will know (as stated by others) sometimes it doesnt take much to cause a significant amount of discomfort.....

....I've had the problem lifting people (which isn't often as im 2nd row) who cannot control their legs, i've caught one on the end of the knob and that brought me down for a while...

  • Andrew Sheridan did the exact same thing to Bekker in the Lions tour. Du plessis is the man, though. Total monster.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 20, 2010 1:04 am

  • As mentioned above, Sheridan did the same to Bekker during the Lions' tour. Also heard a story a couple of years ago about Schalk Burger being willing to use any method to attempt to steal the ball at the ruck, including twisting and yanking a certain body part which shouldn't be twisted and yanked. I am sure it happens quite regularly.

This also reminds my of Joe Worsley (I think) taking a boot in that area from Jason Leonard, requiring stiches and playing the next weekend again, brave stuff.

Although the ultimate was Buck Shelford who had his crown jewels ripped open in a test match, with one dangling out, and told the physio to sew it up, and carried on playing. That is impressive.

Strangley, that area is the part of the body which heals the quickest.

  • RD, could you please remove some of the nasty trolling comments, thanks.

Bob, not true about Schalk Burger. You are probably thinking of the George Smith incident. No video footage says Burger did anything. Schalk is actually a great guy off the field too... I've had a few beers with him, notice win/lose no matter how big the game is he's always smiling.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 20, 2010 2:34 am

  • Never heard anything about Burger doing something like that, Bob.

Why don't you back yourself up before saying things like that?

Now, there are the AFL and NRL players Peter Filandia and John Hopoate.

By Anonymous jaysus, not the jewels!, at October 20, 2010 5:49 am

  • Just so you don't have to go looking for the other one:

"An Australian Rules football player, Peter Filandia, was suspended for 10 games after admitting he bit an opponent's scrotum during a match."

By Anonymous jaysus, not the jewels!, at October 20, 2010 5:50 am

  • It was the Schalk Burger - George Smith incident I heard about - if it isn't true, then it isn't true. As I said I heard about it a while ago, although I am sure that testicle grabbing and the like does happen down in the dark depths of the ruck.

Some people are very defensive of Schalk - as a former Matie, I too met the big man a couple of times, however, someone having a good personality over a beer doesn't make him a saint on the rugby field.

I wasn't trying to bringing his name into disrepute (some of his own indiscretions have done that), I was merely commenting on the phenomenon of "below the belt" incidents in rugby.

By Anonymous Bob, at October 20, 2010 6:41 am

  • Earlier in the game Jannie Du Plessis went flying into a ruck head first, he made contact with Derick Kuun and he needed some medical assistance. It was as clear as daylight yet the citing commissioner didn't see that? What a joke!

By Blogger Unknown, at October 20, 2010 6:43 am

  • What good is citing going to do? Kuun won't even be playing rugby until the Super 15 kicks off anyway....

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 20, 2010 7:33 am

  • ^ so he'll then miss the first few weeks of the tournament if he gets suspended. Long term, but still a punishment.

Definitely an intended punch to the nads. Seems like he didn't hit very hard though, and and the end it didn't look like a closed fist? Still not pleasant lol

  • I don't understand why the ref whistles a penalty in the first place. Could someone explain ?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 20, 2010 10:11 am

  • Love it how he is fine and then suddenly drops to the ground...anyway I'm pretty sure he wasn't trying to aim at his genitals and was merely fighting back

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 20, 2010 10:50 am

  • Lol @ the Anon troll above. Currie Cup is the toughest and oldest competition in the world coming from a kiwi too I have to admit it

By Anonymous Morgan Tui, at October 20, 2010 11:57 am

  • bismark deserved it hes a bully

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 20, 2010 2:19 pm

  • why, because he threatened to punch BOD? Face facts, if du Plessis did punch BOD he'd have done the world a favor.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 20, 2010 2:23 pm

  • Enough trolling comments please, Anonymous people. If you'd like to debate something, use a nickname and go wild, but the negative tone gets tiresome. Cheers

  • I punched someone in the nuts during a match on sat. The little chap kept fighting everytime he got tackled out the park (which was alot) and the ref wasnt sorting him out (maybe cos he was a winger, dunno) even his own team were getting tired of him. So he was shoeing me in a ruck (which he also liked doing) and I punched him clean in the nuts.. but he just laughed! Then I realised why he was such an angry man. Baby balls!

By Anonymous Dr, at October 20, 2010 2:41 pm

  • where are the rest of the highlights from this game?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 20, 2010 2:51 pm

  • There weren't too many other highlights in a low scoring, wet game, so they're not featured. There was intensity and one try, but not much else worth showing.

By Blogger GMC, at October 20, 2010 3:24 pm

  • @Anon asking about why ref gave first penalty:

When the Bulls forwards broke away from the initial mall, they formed up with the ball carrier at the back, being shielded by the rest of the players. Since there were no Sharks involved, it wasn't a maul anymore. Therefore it was truck and trailer.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 20, 2010 4:31 pm

  • To those going on at 'bob' whats up? he wasn't trying to blacken Burgers name....

...as for video footage, etc...you think burger would be running about on the park if there was video footage of him twisting someones jacobs?

It was a speculative, i heard from someone, who heard from someone comment.... geez, it doesnt mean he is a bad guy...i mean i reckon cudmore could be a decent bloke to have a few pints with, doesnt mean he will give you a sensual massage on the pitch though does it....

Everyone knows that rucks and mauls involve 'dark arts' no one really kicks off too much about it because its generally never seen (by camera) hence why sometimes you will see a ruck/maul develop into a massive punch fest for what appears to be no reason at all....

    By Anonymous (u-p)rick, at October 20, 2010 5:27 pm

  • once time I rucked over a teamate, who in the heat of battle looked up at me right in the eye...and socked me in the jewels

yet another reason I can´t stand scrumhalfs!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at October 21, 2010 3:43 am

  • doesnt matter how hard you get hit in the balls. If it hits just right it still bloody kills!
