Argentina get the better of Italy in Verona

Argentina beat Italy for the fifth successive time in Italy as they won 22-16 at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi on Saturday. Felipe Contepomi kicked five penalties for the Pumas while fullback Martin Rodriguez scored a nice try.

Mirco Bergamasco kicked three penalties to add to the a converted penalty try for Italy but they failed to challenge the Pumas line in front of their home crowd. They will host Australia this weekend, while Argentina head to France.

Contepomi, named as Man of the match, said the game was as tough as they’d expected. “We knew it would be a very difficult game against Italy, history tells us it's never been easy for us here," he said. "For us the important thing is the result and to come here and win."

Italy's South African coach Nick Mallett was disappointed with the result.

"Maybe we had more of the ball than Argentina, we had a lot of possession, the backs touched the ball a lot but having possession and creating holes in the defence are different things," he said. "We need to work on our backs' play to create situations to score tries and this is work for everyone, not just the backs," he added.

Captain Sergio Parisse blamed himself for not taking the two chances he had.

"It's a tough moment we feel really bad and I have to take responsibility. I had two chances. At this level you have to take your chances but I didn't and if I had the result could have been different," he said.

They’ve suffered another blow as flyhalf and former Australia rugby league international Craig Gower will miss playing against his country of birth as he’s out with a knee injury.

  • Parisse is quality. Very talented guy

  • Parisse is a one man army. There wasn't much he could have done in either of those try-scoring situations; he was completely isolated.

  • A punch in the guts for Argentina to actually kick the penalty goal after the siren.

The number 8 for Italy was impressive. Failed goose step, but impressive player nonetheless.

  • From that vid it seems the referee was quite strict wid his calls on the scrum. The last one didn't look like a penalty to me.

  • Did anyone get to watch the game, as the score line is closer than i would have guessed.

    Parisse is a class player

  • Parisse = Arguably the best No.8 in the world.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 19, 2010 1:30 pm

  • Watching Italy in these highlights is a bit like watching England about 1-2 years ago. The heart and the passion is there but the precision is a bit off. If you look at the first couple of exchanges the Italy backline is so deep and the defence can really set themselves with that much spare time.

Looks like Argentina were on it though and Contepomi is still showing his class.

  • Is it just me or is Argentina getting old? I haven't noticed any new players sticking their hands up in years. Maybe they were just one of those "golden generations"?

By Anonymous TB, at November 19, 2010 2:02 pm

  • Parisse is good but certainly not the best 8 in the world. The thing with Italy is he wants to do everthing himself and the strategy is basically give him the ball and see what happens.
He's no Pierre Spies, Hardnodroquay (or whatever the f*** you spell it) or Heaslip

By Anonymous Chris, at November 19, 2010 2:28 pm

  • Parisse is certainly better than Spies or Heaslip, both great players but Parisse and Harinodoquay are a step better...not only are they skillful on the ball thaey are both phenomenal at the break-down...if you watch Parisse's club form he is also excellent...and not in a team where he gets all the work to do!
Obstruction for the 1st break?...the winger looks at him, turns his back and moves into his way
He should have backed his pace or strength for the 2nd break...he was never going to fool Contepomi with thtat waddle he did but he might have boshed him!

    What a man?

  • That failed hitchkick is the funniest thing I've see in professional rugby for quite a while...

By Anonymous Von, at November 19, 2010 3:30 pm

  • @M

I think the ref gave the penalty try because the Argentine scrum-half dove into the scrum and nicked the ball; I'm not entirely sure if the scrum had already gone that far, but there's an offside line untill the scrum/ball has crossed the goalline.

I reckon he gave the penalty try for a professional foul by the Arg #9.

  • nice to see rugby matches in italy played in big stadiums even though not completly full.

  • I love Argentina and Italy, couldn't pick a winner.Hope they both come on strong

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 19, 2010 4:42 pm

  • the penalty try was obvious for 9 diving on the ball, the 8 was still bound and the ball was under his control at the back of the scrum. 9 had no right to be there and he knew it.Sander is correct; it was a professional foul, which just don't fly when your that close to the try line.

By Anonymous Blizzy, at November 19, 2010 5:52 pm

  • @ Sander & Blizzy,
I'm pretty sure M was commenting on the last scrum on the video, resulting in the final penalty kick on 80mins, not the earlier one you're both referring to.

And I agree with M on the last scrum. #19 Italy flanker seems to be the one pinged for tackling the scrum-half early, but he's totally bound on to the scrum until well after the scrummie got his hands on it, so does seem harsh, or indeed incorrect.

  • Does anyone know what ever happened to Argentinas JM Hernandez? He was great to watch at 10 during the last world cup. Havent seen him playing for years now

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 19, 2010 6:38 pm

  • @ Von

You're right, I misread that one!

I finally know something and what do you get for it... ;-)

By Anonymous Anonymous, at November 20, 2010 10:14 am

  • Im very sad because Sergio Parisse decided to play for Italy. He is argentine. Such a good player we lose for the Pumas!
