Aironi produce shock upset win over Biarritz

One of the biggest upsets of the weekend, and perhaps the season, happened on Saturday in a Heineken Cup Pool 4 game as Aironi produced a dramatic 28-27 win over last season’s finalists, Biarritz.

Italian side Aironi have done well since joining the Magners League, putting in some impressive performances at home, and now having come up with a Heineken Cup scalp of top French side.

A drop goal from fullback Julien Laharrague with time almost up ensured that they snatched the win after a hard fought game, with Italy coach Nick Mallet watching on from the stands.

Biarritz did score four tries and came within seven points so they left with two losing bonus points, but will have been disappointed to go down to a less fancied side. For the home side though, it was a great achievement and showed that they’re making good progress.

"It was a huge win for us on two fronts. It was the first win of the season for the club and now we can look forward with real confidence," said Marco Bortolami.

"Secondly, we proved ourselves against last season’s Heineken Cup finalists and that is huge for us. We proved that we have quality and that we can play and it brings the self belief back into the team."

Bortolami attributes the new standard of play to coach Rowland Phillips.

"In just a few weeks Rowland has really turned things around here," he said of the former Welsh flanker. "His personality, his coaching technique and the way he approaches things come across very well and we all really respect him.

"I come from playing in England with the British mentality to training and playing and now Rowland is bringing this to the club and all the players are right behind it.

"I think you can see from our recent performances – especially this last weekend – just what he was brought to the team," he said.

These highlights are in Italian, so most of you won’t understand but there are some great moments that make it worth watching, none more so than the exciting finish and reactions of the players after sealing the big win.

  • very annoying commentating

  • haha true, it kept distracting me.
otherwise though, i love it when the underdog wins. what an amazing game.

  • The type of fan this site attracts is visible with the above post, armchair fans complaining about the commentary.

Mute it and watch the rugby, *gasp* pretend you're actually at a game.

  • Beautiful from nick williams!!!

  • P.S. What's annoying about the commentary exactly? Is it the fact that its in Italian? Could be deemed as slight discrimination there ya know.

  • No, that is the type of fan who chooses to comment! Nothing to do with 'the type of fan this site attracts'. That's an insult to RD.

The commentary is in Italian, as the game was in ITALY! Logical, no? As far as I know it wasn't even televised in English anyway, so lets just enjoy the rugby, as Tom said.

I liked how it was a frenchman who kicked the winning points, against a french side. Class. Congrats to Aironi :)

  • well, congratulations to Aironi on their first win. Always nice to see David beating Goliath.

  • I think the commentary is amazing, the guy must have mastered cirular breathing. Great result.

By Anonymous Merv, at December 15, 2010 4:57 pm

  • ...it's highlights commentary. ESPN is just as annoying when they do highlights as well - it's just some guy taking as quickly and saying as much as he can to describe each play.

Either way, as I didn't get to see the match, I'll take what I can. So thanks, RD, for getting the clip up.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 15, 2010 8:24 pm

  • oh come on, the commentator wasn't that bad. Great win for the Aironi! Thanks for posting RD

    By Anonymous jack78, at December 15, 2010 8:40 pm

  • great game! some really nice tries

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 15, 2010 9:55 pm

  • I doubt the commentator is that bad it's just the lack of the match sounds that make it hard to listen to.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 15, 2010 10:10 pm

  • A good kick in the ass of the biarrots.
Better to take it now than when u have to count the points at the end of the pool.

Well done Aironi. Hope the best for italian rugby. It could be a real platform for other countries if they improve their level in celtic league

By Anonymous Flooz, at December 15, 2010 11:19 pm

  • Good to see the Italian sides becoming more competitive. Good for the competition, good for Italy and good for rugby.

By Anonymous Mike, at December 16, 2010 1:02 am

  • that ngwenya is awsome his defence is solid as is his attack.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 16, 2010 2:09 am

  • What was annoying about the commentating was NOT the language, NOT the speed, but rather no background sounds...not a single sound from the match...think about it...you usually hear crowd noise, player noise...this was more like a voice overdub on the game which caused aural overload. @Anon #2 at the top, you are the kind of personality that causes forums to go bad where eventually there is nothing but name calling.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at December 17, 2010 4:30 am

  • so happy to see this coming from an italian background - all we need now is for italy to do the same in the six nations!

By Anonymous samitarugby, at December 17, 2010 1:19 pm

  • Guys I'm italian and I can tell you that this commentary is actually boring, but it's not the live in-game commentary, it's just a post-game highlight clip with voice-over. Apart from that, GREAT game. I was lucky enough to be at Zaffanella Stadium for this one, I'll never forget this game! Go Aironi!

By Blogger Salvatore, at December 17, 2010 6:14 pm
