Jamie Cudmore gets 40 day ban for punch on Gregory Le Corvec

Serial offender Jamie Cudmore has been handed a 40 day ban after being cited for his latest offence against Perpignan in their Top 14 game a few weeks back. He’d just made a return from suspension.

Cudmore struck Perpignan forward Gregory Le Corvec on the ground in what looks like somewhat of a cheapshot, possibly based on the history between the two players. Le Corvec was suspended last season after tampering with Cudmore’s eyes.

The big Canadian second rower has been temporarily suspended since the incident, so by the time his ban comes to an end, he will have missed five matches in total for Clermont. He’s only played in nine Top 14 games this season. He’s spending more time off the pitch than on it these days, as the game against Perpignan was his return after being out for 70 days following a stamp.

His disciplinary record is accumulating and the next time he so much as steps out of line, you can be sure that the resultant suspension will be far heavier than one that would match the crime.

According to Planetrugby, since joining Clermont in 2003 he’s picked up 21 yellow cards and 3 red cards. That doesn't include citings and suspensions. Surely at this stage Clermont must be wondering if at the age of 32, he’s more of a liability than he’s worth?

  • Silly boy. ] He's not very subtle is he? right in front of the ref. It's a shame he's only going to be remembered for one thing.

I will say one thing though in reference to only this incident. If he was eye gouged sometimes a suspension isn't enough and you need some personal revenge.

  • Fuckin useless thug, what an arsehole - if u want to hurt a player smash him in a tackle. Cheapshots are what pussies are good at.

  • they should play jaso white instead. big hits but no suspensions

By Anonymous sam, at January 20, 2011 1:48 pm

  • Ahahaha! Very nice technique Jamie !! I love it !! 40 days are fair enough, don't forget that's just a tactful punch, not an eye gouge or an attack !

    By Blogger Toulouse16, at January 20, 2011 1:53 pm

  • The citing commissioner is biased against the French teams! If this was Paul O'Connell he would have been given an award, not a ban!

By Anonymous Paranoid Frog, at January 20, 2011 2:13 pm

  • Yes i think you are correct paranoid frog. For Paul O'Cs last suspension I believe he received the freedom of Limerick City.

  • 'A decade ago the second row/flanker was the bill collector for a drug dealer in his hometown of Squamish in British Columbia on Canada's west coast.

He had several run-ins with police and served a year in a juvenile detention centre after being found guilty of assault.

Cudmore's name was also linked to a fatal attack that captured headlines across Canada, even though he wasn't directly involved in the incident.

With his family away, Cudmore held a party on New Year's Eve 1997 but he wasn't in the house when a neighbour came to investigate and was beaten to death by two men.'

  • Again this is not an isolated incident.... If you wanna judge for yourself take the time to see the history between both guys.

"Nemesis" would be appropriate and while Cudmore wrote a letter saying that Lecorvec did nothing; LeCorvec instead of taking the matter in his own hands turns out to be a cry baby...even though he's the one who started it.
Nevertheless, Jamie does deserve a suspension for sure.

By Blogger jay, at January 20, 2011 2:37 pm

  • What, no posts screaming that this wouldn't be a ban in SH/League/Blow Football (delete as appropriate).

I do notice we have had a Paranoid Frog though. I see now the bias is against French TEAMS not just French players as it was before. Vraiment?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 20, 2011 3:10 pm

  • Cudmore is a terrorist, for many years he only focused on brutallities in every top 14 game he played.
Ban the guy for ever, he's an insult to rugby

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 20, 2011 3:17 pm

  • I wonder if he ought to be playing his rugby in Romania, the way he goes looking for fights. Or maybe just knock him down to a pro D2 squad.

Either way, he would have plenty of options to get into scuffles then.

I think he's a blight on Clermont's reputation as well - for someone who isn't already a fan, to see that they continue to support and pay a player like that says something about the team itself. It's like Vick playing for the Eagles. Just a douchebag.

By Anonymous alf, at January 20, 2011 3:23 pm

  • don't know why the commentator's laughing was a dirty cheapshot.

  • dirtiest player to play rugby besides tana umaga

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 20, 2011 3:52 pm

  • ^ I guarantee you an Irishman wrote that :)

Cudmore somehow manages to get himself in the poo over and over again! This punch wasnt even huge but it was sooo unnecessary. Just stupid, and embarrassing. Back to the couch for you Jamie.

By Anonymous Laz, at January 20, 2011 4:02 pm

  • The Clermont coaching staff must be fed up with his persistent stupidity!?
They pay him to play rugby not spend the majority of his time suspended.

By Anonymous James Coffey, at January 20, 2011 4:02 pm

  • Umaga dirty ??? ahahaahahaha if it weren't for BOD ... touch the queen and you've already done wrong ^^

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 20, 2011 4:06 pm

  • This guy is just silly. He's always involved in bad stories. i'm pretty sure he assumes very well his bad guy image.

furthermore, he has become an easy target to provokate in order to earn yellow and red cards. Vern Cotter is very patient..

By Anonymous Colombes, at January 20, 2011 4:17 pm

  • Way to go, coward. Your next offence will earn you a 3 month ban or something, the next after that retirement.
Can't come soon enough if you ask me.

By Anonymous dutchrugbyplayer, at January 20, 2011 4:47 pm

  • Umaga wasn't particularly dirty. Stop trolling please.

By Anonymous Mike, at January 20, 2011 4:51 pm

  • Guys (or Laz) I guarantee that comment on umaga was not written by an Irishman!!! It is blatantly someone looking for a rise, and well done, you all gave it to him. 99% of BOD's lions injury comments are made by people who are not Irish referring to how the Irish feel, which inturn invokes the old 'get over it' comments, which is then followed by 'well it wasn't us who said it' comments....

Anyway, onto this....I always love watching/hearing about Cudmore...there is nothing disintegrating about a game when he is involved as he nearly always produces some sort of fight or scrap.

It is quite laughable, but yes in reality, this is a business more than a game and he obviously costs money yet you don't get the power from him...(as he is banned so damn much)

Can't really argue about the ban, I suppose given his previous record he can expect large bans for lesser infringements...

    By Anonymous (u-p)rick, at January 20, 2011 5:05 pm

  • The people who know Cudmore and Clermont only by watching each Cudmore's bad acts on RD (none of them are missing...) should close their mouth and keep their biased advices for themselves. He is an idiot, that is a fact. But what a rugby player, and he is not more "dirty" than so many players. "he's an insult to rugby" ... ahahaha. Each team has its "Cudmore"... The big agressive forward always ready for fight. That's part of rugby.. It's only a punch, not more, and the real looser is the player and the team so stop crying les perpignanais.

By Anonymous Saint Jamie, at January 20, 2011 5:13 pm

  • Looking at his posture, the bone structure in his face, his agressiveness and the way he goes absolutely berserk every now and then...I guess he needs to be 'randomly' drug-tested a wee bit more often.
Not accusing him of anything...but than again not denying that in rugby we might also have some dishonest people.

By Anonymous Guy, at January 20, 2011 5:27 pm

  • Thank you, comment #28. You just made me create my own account under this name. Last time you can do anything like this. Enjoy, the joke is on you.
PS RD can you please ban these comments and those idiots?

By Blogger dutchrugbyplayer, at January 20, 2011 5:33 pm

  • Saint Jamie -

That is like saying 'corruption is a part of politics, so don't complain about it'. Wrong. Punching people on the ground or other violence happens, but it not part of the game. That is why the laws do not allow it. Stop moaning just because this idiot was caught AGAIN.

By Anonymous Mike, at January 20, 2011 6:23 pm

  • Dutchrugbyplayer,

Don't worry, it's usually pretty obvious when there's a doppel posting like that. (cue obvious doppels in my name)

By Anonymous Mike, at January 20, 2011 6:25 pm

  • Maybe Cudmore is just a crap player, and he doesn't want people to realise so he gets himself banned all the time.

By Anonymous Conspiracy Man, at January 20, 2011 6:32 pm

  • That's the thing, though, Conspiracy Man. Cudmore ISN'T a bad player...in fact, he can be quite good. If he could just stay out of trouble, he might be more well-renowned. But it's impossible for this dumb oaf to keep his head on his shoulders and the red mist out of his eyes, so he'll likely keep on offending.

And Saint Jamie - if Clermont and its supporters want everyone else to stop assuming they're a bunch of cheating thugs, then maybe they ought not present themselves that way.

I was thinking of starting a charity foundation that works to cure cancer and give terminal children the chance to enjoy their lives while they can. Now that he's got some free time, I was thinking of having Dudus Coke as our CEO and Amy Winehouse as our Chair. What do you think?

By Anonymous alf, at January 20, 2011 7:30 pm

  • It's a conspiracy! Cudmore is innocent, as always, as are all French players...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 20, 2011 8:16 pm

  • @ st jamie- If other players were as dirty as Cudmore, they'd be up here as well. But they're not. Cudmore is well ahead of other players in terms of dirtiness. Maybe he is a good player, but that doesn't mean he isn't dirty.

And it isn't just a punch. It's a cheap shot, like most of his offenses. When he goes up against someone head to head he gets the crap kicked out of him (by O Conell), so he usually sticks to cheap shots.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 20, 2011 8:46 pm

  • Good lad Jamie to be honest clermont are better without you! Join MMA or UFC somthing see what happens when you come up against a real fighter. Dirty prick..

By Anonymous The Other Conor, at January 20, 2011 9:13 pm

  • What a nightmare this player.....

Clearly he can bring a well needed physicality to the game of ASM but at which cost....

40 days is very light I believed, even if there is an history between the two players.

What bother me the most in the ban lenght is that if this would happen in a Hcup game he would deservedly got 10 weeks at least.

Surely we (French) cannot be surprised afterwise if some of our club players get heavy banned during European games since we are clearly not sending the right message locally.

As much as I love RD in keeping me updated etc I have to say I hate some of the comment boards, they seem like a playground for school kids who know nothing of rugby!!!

By Anonymous dutchrugbyplayer, at January 20, 2011 11:56 pm

  • Ever wonder why they ship Cudmore in from Canada? It's not because they couldn't find a tall guy in France. It's because European guys are dandies. Jamie Cudmore is just too real for Europeans.

Here's to the thugs from the New World!

By Anonymous TB, at January 21, 2011 12:25 am

Hahaha good one, it just makes it funnier the fact that its a lie.

By Anonymous Link, at January 21, 2011 3:22 pm

  • Hahaha this guy is unbelievable.

I'd send him to Stade Francais and let Guazzini make him fight with a lion or something (or even old Bakkies) as a show before matches. That way he would unleash his wrath without ruining the game, and once the fight is over, back to your cage!

By Anonymous Juggernauter, at January 21, 2011 4:40 pm

  • I've never seen Cudmore play. Is he anygood? Up there with Matfield or Thorn?

By Anonymous Taka, at January 21, 2011 10:58 pm

  • No Taka, don't be silly, he is a NH player there is no way he can posess talent like any SH player....

Excuse my troll, in all fairness though as a non saffa I'd still consider matfield as the best lick in the game these days...so no cudmore is not there with him....he is not bad though. He has the height and power or any good second row. He also has a good sight for the game and can carry the ball well, the problem is his discipline though, his inability to keep his cool could possibly push him down to one of the worst locks in the game. In some sense you see bakkies who is apparently a 'great and formidable player' but I don't see it, nor accept it because of his ill-discipline.

By Anonymous Dutchcantplayrugby, at January 22, 2011 12:03 am

  • Good for Jamie Cudmore, he's a goon but that's half the fun. Nice to see more Canadians being recruited as professionals. Glasgow have 3 Canadians and the more the merrier.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 22, 2011 1:15 am

  • I heard recently on the radio of a survey asking to the/some Top14 players their top 3 of the most annoying opponents:

(if someone has found something about this on the web, I will be glad to have a look)

    I believed the ranking was:
    1/ Cudmore
    2/ Leguizamon
    3/ Marconnet

By Anonymous Flipje, at January 22, 2011 10:32 am

  • Cudmore got his arse handed to him by Paul O' Connell a few years back. He's a scumbag who brings the game into disrepute every time he goes on the field. Should be banned for life.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 22, 2011 12:49 pm

  • ^^^^ except anonymous he doesn't do it everytime..... So I don't really get your comment. A player will never be banned for life for cudmore type punches, the only way cudmore could ever lose out is if clermont don't renew his x contract and that no other team takes him on.... And given his form in terms of ill-discipline he carries a lot of potential baggage...

Can't dispute POC kicking his ass....the last part of that clip was POC on top

    By Anonymous (u-p)rick, at January 22, 2011 4:13 pm

By Anonymous Anonymous, at January 22, 2011 8:42 pm

  • "Looking at his posture, the bone structure in his face, his agressiveness and the way he goes absolutely berserk every now and then...."

What, you've never seen a Canadian?

And to who said that Michael Vick was an insult to whatever team he played for. Do you even watch the NFL? Vick was one of the best damn quarterbacks in the league this season and always exciting to watch.
